12 E Cr AZETT3. LOCAL AFFAIRS. DEDICATION. —The new Lutheran church at Allenville will be dedicated on Thursday, 25th inst., services com moneing at half past 10. The sermon will be preached by Rev. C. Lepley, of Williamsport, Maryland. MORE IIOSE. —It is evident at every fire that at least 500 feet of additional hose is wanted. There was originally about 1400 feet, which divided between two companies, afforded ample length to reach a fire in almost any quarter, but some sections r.re worn out, others unfit for use, so that neither reel can now lay enough to reach a fire at cer tain extreme points between two plugs. With the above quantity of additional hose, and the appointment of a man to attend to the buildings and apparatus —(why not give the lamplighter £SO more for this additional duty?)—time and property would both be saved. We hope the Burgess and Council will attend to this at once, as it will have to be done before long, and it is much better to do it before than after another fire. THE DRAFT. —Active exertions are making in the different districts, by local bounties, to till their quotas un der the draft. Lewistown offers $l3O, and some of the townships exceed that figure. It is again stated that re-cnlisted veterans credited to counties at larse, can change their credits to local dis tricts by amending the roll or filing a supplement THE WEATHER. —Wednesday morn ing snow, afternoon windy. Thursday morning cloudy, afternoon clear, rath er pleasant. Friday morning snow, afternoon clear. Saturday morning a light snow, clear and pleasant the rest of the day. Sunday cloudy but not cold. Monday morning cloudy with a little wind ; snow squalls in the after noon. Tuesday cold, with occasional snow blusters; evening clear and quite cold. Week has been variable. Jtejr Quite a number of the gallant 4oth regiment are now on a visit home, nearly the entire body having re-en listed. Many others of different regi ments are also here. The Logan Guards we learn are at Ilarrisburg. As we intimated last week the testimony before the officers detailed to examine into the alleged lrauds at Miftlintown, shows that much of it was got up out of personal animosity be tween parties who have been at war with each other for several years. We care for none of them, but as an in stance may mention that the name of John J. Patterson, who was bandied about as the head and front of the frauds, was not even mentioned by a single witness. Whatever wrong was perpetrated, was done by a clique of all parties—the majority patent demo crats —who always have their hands in such transactions, whether the State, the United States, or the People arc to be robbed or swindled. adjust opened atE. Swain's Fancy Store, one of the largest and best select ed assortments of Perfumery, Extra cts and Toilet Articles ever offered for sale in this town. Any lady or gentleman who wishes a genuine article of that kind will find just the thing they waut. Some weeks ago we notified our read ers that Swain's was the place to find the best assortment of French and American Stationery to be met with this side of our eastern cities, and now we will inform the young folks who delight in paying their respects to each other at this season of the year, that they will find some of the handsomest Valentines ever seen. Just give him a call and satisfy yourselves of the truth of what we say. Don t forget the place —between Biymyer's and Ilitz's stores, East Market street, south side. 3 INSTRUMENT FOR SALE.—An elegant fine-toned Piano is ottered for sale, on reasonable terras. Any person wish ing to purchase an instrument of this kind, should apply immediately. Fur ther information given at this office —At Gettysburg 28,000 muskets were taken. It is stated that of these 20,000 were found to be loaded, 12,000 containing two loads, and 6,000 from three to ten leads each. In many instances half a doz en halls were driven in on a single charge of powder. In some cases the former pos sessor had reversed the usual order, placing the hall at the bottom of the barrel and the powder on the top. A Dead Man Driving a Horse. —The Galena Democrat ..ells of a man who, in a buggy, was slowly passing a farm house in the neighborhood of Warren, 111., one of the cold days last week. The woman of the house thinking that he must be very cold, called on him to come in and warm himself He made no reply, but, turning neither to the right or left, kept slowly on his way. The lady fearing that the man would freeze; knowing that there was no hovse tor five miles in the direction he was going, requested her husband to tol low him and induce him to stop and warm himself. He did so, and coming up. found him frozen stiff, dead, with whip in one hand and lines in the other. Killed by a Vicious Horse. —A man named Robert Quick, residing in Northum berland county, was killed by one of his own horses the other day. The brute seiz ed his arm between his teeth and shattered it to pieces, after which he reared upon him and trampled him to death. So fero cious was the brute that it was with the greatest difficulty that the body of the de ceased was secured from the stable.
