RANDOM FACTS. —We were in error last week in stating that Lloyd Tilghman, the rebel general captured at Fort Henry, wis formerly employed on the Pennsyl vania Railroad. Our informant it seems confounded him with E. J Tillman, who we are assured is a loyal citizen. Thure must be however a strong resemblance be tweon the two, as the party had been in the habit of seeing <* e last named frequent ly during the const, uction of the Pennsyl vania railroad The rebel Tilghman is a Marylander, and was also a civil engineer as well as one of the base ingral.es eduea ted at West Point. -Last Friday was St. Valentine's Day; but few missives passed through the post o.Ti :e. The balls in town were rung on .Monday evening, the drum and fife enlivened our streets, and hundreds of old and young exhibited their joy iu various ways over the (J eat Victory at Fort Donclson. The Democrat i lashing the "democratic" contractors and plunderers who are swindling thu govern inent —at least we infer it must uieau them, for of all in this region we do not know of the second man in the people's party who is concerned in a contract. W. W. Brown, late treasurer of Centre county, is a defaulter to the amount of some thou sands, and is catching fits at the hands of the " pure democracy." A gran 1 miss meeting of the friends of I cu:p);r.iiiee was held on M >ndav evening, ' I >, at (lie Town Hi!', in Ham* iit m, the proceedings of which areas follows: Alter electing Samuel Drake President, and ' also a Secretary, the assembly was entertain ed with a song by the ladies, adapted to the i occasion, which was fdfuwed with prayer by , L-*v. J. H. S. Clark. The meeting was then addressed hy Rev. J H. McGarrah. who start ed in his remarks hy saying that the import ance of the temperance cause was the only reason he could present for urging it upon their attention c.: this time, when anxiety, with reference to our national difficulties oe cupiea every niind. He said : While the evil spirit of rebellion is painting our streams red with the blood, and fattening our own native soil with the bodies f our kindred, there is another evil spirit dragging thousands of our fellows down to tlie silent halls of death. And while we spare no pains to crush the demon oi secession, we should at the same time carry on a deadly warfare with the demon of in temperance. Ho said the license system al ways liad failed, and always would fail; that it had not in it the elements of success, but those of destruction. He closed his remarks on this point by saying "were I a limner, and requested to paint a design of the present Pennsylvania License System, I would paint a stately throne, and call it the throne of in finity; on it I would have a landlord fattened on the bread of tbe drunkard's family, and bloated on his own poison, until be was as b ; 2 as Shakespeare's Falstaff ;ou his head I would have a crown of bottles—tbe proper "isignia of his office—and on both sides I'd paint the poor, the haggard, the woe begone, the ragged arid the wan, pleading for rum. In an outside circle I would paint tbe wretch ed and distressed kindred, pleading with the unfortunate ones to abandon their downward and hell ward course, and if it were poerible 1 would paint their groans and sighs, as they ascend to heaven, and enter into the ears of the Lord God who pitieth them, I would take the sad picture to Harrisburg. during a ses sion ot the Legislature, and holding it up be tore them I would ask—in the name of God would ask —whether at the sight of it thoy felt no compunction. Ye who have hearts of pity; who hare wept and still weep ever the wreck and ruin of your kindred! ye, at least can enter into these melancholy' reflec tions. and appreciate this darkly drawn pic ture . r lie then proeeedcd to show that moral sua sion, while it accomplished much, yould nev er breau down drunkenness effectually ; tfiafc the only well grounded hope of the friends of temperance is iu such a law as will prohibit the sale of intoxicating drinks, thus forever removing the temptation from before thpse ex posed to drink. He closed by alluding to the effect of in temperance in the fallowing language: "Let us look for a moment at the fearful ravages of this demon of destruction ; oh, what has intemperance not done: It has dimmed the eye of many a noble, aspiring young man and obscured the brightest scintillations of talent. It has robbed middle age of its vigor and blasted the hopes of countless thousands by hurrying them to an untimely grave. It has brought the gray locks of honor down to the grave in disgrace, and shrouded millions in gloom and terror in their last moments. It has stamped infamy and disgrace upon the reputai: in of many a noble man down to his expiring hour. Nay, more: it has hurried millions of redeemed humanity down to the nethermost hell to weep and wail, world with out end. As we then have such a mighty enemy to contend with let us do it coura geously, and n;ver rest until we have plaeed our feet upon his throat and buried the stil etto to its hilt in the monsters heart and drained its life blood." Music by the Choir. The meeting was then addressed by Hey. J. 11. b. Clark, who stated he felt like adding another brick to the great superstructure, that is. building the temperance cause. Ilis remarks were principally to the ladies, show ing them the wicke 1 as well as the good in fluence tiiey exerted upon iijen. After speak ing for some time, the speaker reh ted some p'e.ivng anecdotes, which were listened to with marked attention. Music by the Choir. A vote of thanks was then tendered the speakers for their able and eloquent ad diesses. On motion, the meeting adjourned. 15v order of the Committee. 0. B. DLNHIHK, Sec'y. HIE .MARKETS.
