RECESS IN SCHOOLS. —An article under the head of communications in another part of to-day's paper, refers to a line or two we published a few weeks ago in which we called recess in schools a nuisance. It ii used for another purpose by the writer, but as he somewhat mistakes our meaning, we will refer to recess more particularly. It is not alone the noise which renders re cess in our neighborhood a nuisance. The yelling, hooting, and screeching are bad enough in all conscience, hut this might be borne if unaccompanied by other acts as annoying as they are mischievous; we refer to stone throwing, to pounding fences, doors, and buildings; to scratching and marking buildings, doors, porches, stops, Ac., with nails, chalk, kale, pencils, Ac. ; to dirty language and fighting and quarrel ling. To such an extent have all these been carried that property in the- immedi ate neighborhood of the schoalhouses west- Ward of our office has depreciated in value, so that none who know aught of these mat ters could be induced to purchase on any ;enns on either side. For our part wc irould not take the three houses below our <4 as <t <Jt/i i conditioned merely that wc it'juld lire in one. Another annoyance to he whole, neighborhood is a continual run ling for water at hydrants—the school &ml being ready enough to tax water :ock for school purposes, but too penuri is to make some provision lor proeu !]„' water, being willing it seems that it tall be taken by a species of petty larce a " lesson" we should think highly ad utageous to the rising generation in a oral point of view ! Such are the lacts iutive to recesses. Were £hc teachers stroll out among the children while pan moniutn is let loose, their presence glit do much to restrain, not innocent tiaiion, Lut positive mischief. We are itids of the teachers, there being not one mg them all to whom we would not 'orfiuWdo a favor if in our power, and are friends of the children, but we A it in sincerity when we say that we tin i;ct ilk? a child of ours to take ies s in " recess c.dugatiou." The Sciences oj Life w Death- —We observe j j that a machine for easting bullets, capable of j j turning opt one hundred and sixty balls per 1 | minute, has been started at Washington.— ! j Twice as much attention is paid to the science j of killing: as that of curing. More thnn fiv> hundred instruments of wholesale destruc lion have been patented within the last twenty years, and only two great curative?, llolloway's Pills and Ointment, have been in troduced within that time. It would seem however, that these medicine's pretty fairly balance the account between the healing art and the science of destruction. The proba bility is, that they save a much greater num ber of lives than patent rifles, pistols and cannon destroy : and as their consumption is increasing in almost geometrical ratio in this country, the odds it: their favor are augment ing every year. The late (California papers represent these remedies as accomplishing the most extraordinary cures in tl.at State, and especially in the placers, wet and dty. That most tenacious of internal diseases, dys entery, is said to have lost ail its terrors in the eyes of the miners, since the introduc tien <.f the I'ills; and the virulent eruptions arid ulcerous disorders, contracted by working in excavations half filled witjj water, under a hot sun, ere so rapidly reduced by the appli cation of the Ointment, that the digg-r? are less careful than they ought to L Ftn avoid exposure. Rillicus remittents, and'intermit tent fevers, have heretofore been terrible scourges in tbe valley of the Sacramento, ami iu the neighborhood of all the water courses where the presence of g.yd has attracted a population; but now. the papers say that these disorders appear t > be drying out un der the renovating and'purifying operation of the former preparation.
