Having our attention called to this fact by Brother Jfaloy, re minds us that at present the offices of sheriff, prothonotary, rcglsterand recorder, coronsr, associate judge, mercantile apprais er, and assemblyman, are simply seyerallf occupied by Mauch Chunk gentlemen. Of courso, It Is an unfair division of tbe spoils, but what are you going U do about It? The masked men rushed Into tho room on time; the cloroform and pistol was ready for use; but Instead of wilting as they oxptcted be would, when he saw tho pistol close to bis head, tho old gamecock jumped for the robbers, receiving tho charge full In his face; be dropped like a shot, and tbey thought tho bad killed him, but bo was worth a hundred dead men, and got off with bis money and his life. Tho story Is an Instructive one, If a man like Phil Daly can be nicked up by the Iladgers, what chance has a countryman in New York. If ho walks Broadway un dor tho noonday sun and forgets for a mo- roont the wife and children he has left bo hind, he Is In deadly peril, tie passes a bewitching widow or coy looking maiden, an'J ho observes hor looking at him out of tho corner of her eyo; he turns about, she has slopped on tbe corner of tho street, waiting for a ctr perhaps, ho turns and walks to the nearest corner and Inquires of the lady If that is Broadway. Ho says that he Is looking for the Hoffman House, ard as sho Is going up Broadway ho kindly volunteers to show him tho way, he Is de lighted and long before ho reaches tbe IlolT- man he has turned off to the Badger's den. Caugut In tho act, he dare not faco ex uosure, and when he gets out ho has not money enough left to pay his hotel bill; Is forced to borrow money to get back home, nd this Is tho experlenco of thousands and thousands of men every year in New York who nover tell the story. They were decern men enough at home; they attended church regularly with their families, said grace be fore meat, and perhaps passed the contrl butlon box on Sundays; yet they came to .Vow York and the Badgers caught them You ask why? Well, It Is because they know so much; they are so smart, you can1 teach them anything; they know it all, and consequently they Tall the easiest victims lo the crooks. To show the loose bond that binds those murderous vllllans: no sooner are tbey cap lured than each almost breaks his neck trying to convict the others. It would have been a very small loss if they had rob bed and killed Phil Daly; he belongs to class who thrive on domestic ruin and social No one knows how much he perhaps a million, but every couple of years, that they woro often lock- od tip In her room for hours, ho grow jeal ous of his sister's honor, and spoko to her about It. She, however, gave blm to un derstand that alio was perfectly able ;o tako care of herself with out his advice, and Goldonklrch kept coming lo the house. At last tho brothor full so outraged that ho forbad young Ooldcnkirch darkening bis doors. This, howevor, made no difference; he kept coming just tho same as before. Miss Green was taken dangerously 111, aid young Uoldenklrch canio 'o see her and was met at tho door by tbo brother, who told blm his sister was 111 and he could not como In; a scuffle ensued and Goldonklrch tried to rush past Green, who drew a pistol and shot him dead. It then transpired that be had been married to Green's sister over three years, but they bad kant the se cret to themselves: ho bad never mentioned It to his father and mother, and sho had kept the secret from her brother. Whether It was that she was ashamed of herself for having married a boy, or that bo was ashamed of his ancient wife, will never be known: but the husband Is dead, the wife almost a maniac, and the brother a mi dercr. Tbat is what we all want to know. Mr. Auld says bo married ber becauso Bishop Potter told blm to. That's all very well, but why did tbe bishop A "badger" is a fellow who, in partner- tell bim to marry ber? Widow .Christie shlD with a woman, lures a man into a says she 'married bim to punish blm. If house of eyll repute and robs bim. Tbe tbat is really so I can imagine that a livelj came is usually worked on Deoole from young widow could make it very uncoin- the country, merchants who come here to buy goods; country ministers, deacons and and trustees, farmers who have been here to sell lots of produce; lawyers who have families and characters to lose where tbey live, and who can't stand exposure or dis grace. The reason of tbo extraordinary ex citement of tbe week was chosen for tbe game. In sporting circhs there is no man better known than Phil. Daly. His gamb ling house at Long Branch has been a favorite resort for some very fine company. Gentlemen from the South always pay Phll'i house a visit and fight the tiger; in deed many very fine gentlemen from the North are not averse to eating Phil's ad mirable suppers, drinking bis Mumiu, his Chiteau Lafi.te.Vcrzenay and Clicquot, not to mention bis terrapin and turtle soup, truffles and pate de foU gras, and every- thing else tbat goes to make up a menu fit for tbe gods. Now, tbe game they tried lo play on Phil was not exactly tbe ordinary Badger game. It was highway robbery, pure and simple, though not on the highway. In the regu lar badger game the victim is lured into a room by a woman, when suddenly an out raged husband rushes from a closet, pistol In hand, and demauds to know what you are doing In his house and 'with his wife. If the victim Is a business man with a family, he dreads exposure, and parts with bis walch and all his money, and thinks himself lucky to get off with bis life for there Is ually quite a scene; tbe outraged husband Insists on killing thu Intruder, and tbe wife begs for bis life. But there was nothing of this in Phil Daly's case. The plan was to cloroform him, bind and rob, or extort from bis fears of exposure $25,000 fortablo for a fellow if she tried. It is an exceedingly niyteiious case all round. Mr. Auld was the pastor of St. Mary's in Har lem, and was regarded as a clerical and social success. He lived with bis mother at the parsouage, and so far as known no particular piece of calico seemed to have made any serious Impression on the young parson. hen the Christmas holidays came be found himself tho lucky possessor of fourteen dressing gowns, nine pairs of embroidered slippers, and twenty-seven smoking caps -show lug that he stood well with tbe female poitiou of the cougi egaliou ; but it was remarked by all visitors at the parsonage tbat be always wore the diesslug gown tbat bad been presented by the wid ow Christie. In March last it was hinted that matters had gone so far with Ihe widow that the dominie ought to mairy her; at atij rate they rushed dotvn lo the neighbor ing uiluisler and asked blm to marry them at once. It was Lent and the minister re fused to periorm the ceremony; so without more to do the young parson sat down at the Rectory table and drew up an Ironclad agieement to take the widow as his lawful wife. When Lent was oyer, he did not feel In a marrying mood, and refused to keep the contract. Widow Christie appeal ed to Bishop Potter, and gaye him such cogent reasons why the ceremony should be performed, that the Bishop gave an im perative command that the' marriage take place at once, and In obedience to this de cree they were married tbe other day; and right here comes the slrauge complication of the whole business. In the Episcopalian service, tbe husband promises to "love, honor and cherish his wife, and forsaking all others will cleave only onto her." Now, a few years ago I witnessed one of the most shameful and sacrillglous entertainments of this kind ever given in this town. Every body was disgusted, and the very large audience present showed their contempt by loud mocKing una ridicule, we were in foi med ny somu of tlie more pious members, who bewail these tunics, that tuts year something on tbe same order is to be enact ed, much to the discust of tbe godly who feel timid In opposing the worldli leader, who seeks his own glon '(not the dory of Christ) by these ungodly displays of pride and vanity. When the church of Christ ts profaned bv these thlncs can wn reasonablv expect a revival, or is It astonishing tbat onh a few Sunday school scholars are cbrls ilans. The church believes on the author ity ot God s Word that If a soul Is not saved bv Christ It Is lost eternall. uhoisrespon slide? Is it very strange tbat we have more nan onco heard the more pious members of the church of Christ say tbat tbe church would gain greatly if lnee worldly-minded leaden, who hinder the work of Uod would leave the church or be removed and their places filled by better aud more godly men. Piety. or $30,000. Tho job that was put up might "r. Auld promised all this before the altar, have succeeded with a country merchant, nui1 immediately informed tho minister aud or farmer, but not with an old gambler like Phil Daly. All his life has been passed with desperate men,-who travel with Der ringer's in their pockets, and bowie-knives In their boots. Pickpockets and cracks men gave Uncle Pbll the go-bye, for the chances were a hundred to one that he al ways carried an ounce of cold lead In bis pouch which would find a lodging under their ribs If they meddled with bis watch or his purs. Uncle Pbll carried a blazing diamond In his Immaculate and capacious shut-front big as a head-light; his five hundred dollar gold watch was fastened to his vest by an ox-cbaln of gold tbat weigh ed about a pound; his pockets bulged out his wife that he would never live with her, that he hated ber, and turning his back nn her rushed out of the church. Mr. Auld declares that b hates his wife, and she says that she only married bim to punish blm. Thore is but little doubt tint she has been wonderfully successful, for Mr. Auld sa. e tbat tbe widow has blasted bis life, He has given up bis church, and I should not be at all surprised to hear of a very tragic ending to this very extraordinary marriage. A reuiarkablH murder trial closed here tills week with the acquittal of the accused. A man named Green was living In Brook lyn with his sister, a middle-aged laay, and -with bank-notes and bonds, so tbat, in flash they bad occupied tbo same house eighteen parlance, be was a fat goose to pluck, .Many a fat goose Uncle Phil has plucked In bis gambling-houses in Philadelphia, New Tork and Long Branch. Many a man has gone Into Uncle Phil's den with thous ands in bis pocket, and in less tban an hour, finding himself ruined, has put t pistol to his desperate bead and blown his brains ul. There were four eeneerned In tbe job to rob Uncle Phil, they got him In tbe room all right, tbe plot was on tb verge of sue ; U rW i ld hsb kitekta years, ever since tbe death of their father, who left them a comfortable fortune. There was no division of property between them; tbey had all they wanted, and their lives slipped pleasantly away, each, seeming to have the other's unlimited confidence.
