Lesson 12 March 2L MESSIAH'S MKSSKNOKn. What an eventful history It (si We have watched It from tho beginning, nnd all through the varied experiences of God's chosen people it has been Im possible tqfall to lucognize the Divine hand. This was very marked in tho seventy year's captivity, which taught tho Jetvs many valuable lessons ond laid tho foundation' for their after na tional and spiritual life. It was during tills period that they formulated many of tliose Ideas which have slnco become sound doctrine, and on their return to their native land wo find them raising to a higher plane of spiritual life than over before. Idolatry was a tiling of the past, and out of the darkness pf tho times there was revealed stronger glimpses of a Dlvine'DeHrercr and Sav iour of tbo people. The priests of this period (after tho captivity) apprar to have given i. great Impetus to this re ligious work, and to have done much to prepare the way for the coming Christ. There was still much to bo done when Malachi, last of the prophets, wrote tho book which bears bis name. Malachi means "the angel, or messenger of Je hovah." The peoplo aro now looking fqr surer and belter things than have been their lot hitherto, and Malachi tells them, first, of God as n loving Father and. ltuler of His people; next," lie speaks of the Supreme God and Father of us all; and ho closes his remarkable boulc with a description of God as the final and righteous judge of all. This lessen Is a nart of the last phase of his wtlllngs. It must have been peculiarly grateful to a people who haJ seen so much ad versity, and whoso national life had been so completely ciushed, according to the will of God. Emerging from the desolations of tho captivity and trying to re-establish themselves In their ancient city of Jerusalem, was a task difficult of accomplishment with national safety. But tbey were well eoverned and caiefully trained, thus glvirg them a fuller opportunity of establishing themselves in the faith of their fathers. But in the midst of this comes Malachi, telling them ot John the Baptist who should be the herald of One who should bo the Savior of His people, nnd whom he calls tho "Sun of lilghteousno39." It was a blessed prediction, and tho more blessed for Its happy expressive ness. The Jews looked back, and all was dark, so dark 1 Even the present, with tho energy which was being thrown Into P. was anything but bright. They trembled for the future. But Malachi tells them of a "Sun nf Blghteousness" wiu shall "arise with healing In bis wings," and the. glorious vision elves them a beautiful promise of hope In the future. In the fullness of time, John the Baptist appeared with his message, and then there came the Christ, who not only brought deliv erance, to the captive Jew, but showered His gentle mercy upon every son of our common humanity. With feelings of regret we turn from tho Old Testament, so full of striking nnnatlve aiad sterling truth; but wo turn our faces, with the expectant Jews, toward the "Sun of Blghteousness," whose glory shall never fade. 1,US0?I THOUGHTS. 1. It Is sometimes darkest just beforo the dawn. 2. The sinner's night may be changed to day by the "Sun of Itigliteous ncss." :i. God'ss love for our race sent us a Savior. I.
