ARTEMUS WARD'S BROTHER, The following quaint letter from a gentleman who professes to be the brother of the celebrated Artemus Ward says an Eastern exchange, reached us the other day by regular mail, and we give it because it em• braces so much of the special kind of humor for which Artemus is so re nowned. The whole family seems to be laboring under a very had "spell," which is a disorder that, in their case, however, seems to operate as disease does upon certain oysters, in produc ing a pearl where we might only ex pect putridity . SIIEGAROO, MIMI 11, 1865. To the Edytur of the Sunday Times New York.: 4 years ago, while in Indianspeles, injyana, I wrote to Kr. Prentiss off the Looseville Journel, regarding the whereabouts of my brother, Artymus Ward, of boom I have not heard sinst he was a boi, "And we rented the fields together." bapye as a Maekerrel in .K.ashmeer Sox. Their was four off as brothers, all bole. The following is a pedagog off our family. Our parents of which there were 2, consisted of our father and mother, namely : Kanner and Erysipelas Ward.— The latter (my father) was given heartily to Plugg tobacker, of which he thawed so incessantly that Biled Bacon done rair was his best hold.— He was a man that could not go long between drinks ; the kamil did not predominate in him, and G. Hover took him at the age of sicksty, and after two days sickness. The follow ing is applicable to his case "Oakum, Oakum I with rue."—S. Pere. After the old man's deth, our moth er was left with four bole aforesaid, to whizz, namely, i. e. Erysipelas (named after father.) Artymus (the Long Lost.) Rodney and myself. Olonzo (named after olonzo of piz zaroncan celebrity.) My eldest brother, Ery, went into the wool bizziness, while Rodney went out to Orriggone territory and Mbarked in the Fur trade. Ery did poorly at the Wool, and bursted, but Rodney is still in the Fur Coining money. Artymus at the tender age of elev en, was suddenly mist from beam.— In this konnessbin would remark an old stoekin belongin to mother containing fore dollars in ()aver and fifty two cents in - Kopper, disappear ed about the same time. There was a party of akraw bats, or double som. crest proklivitys, in our naburhood few days previs, and by many it was supposed Arty had been inviggled. "To leave his ga happy home, Sand eyes, sands teeth brushes, Sande pale ale. _ The worrild is all a stage, The rest Is lawman and van Ulla." —Jack Spear. At all evinks I have never heern of him but once, i. o. when I wrote to Mr. Prentiss, who did not answer mi letter, be beein engaged in translat ting a French letter sent to him by Soosan Monday, a noted gorriller, of the femail gender. Off her more hereafter, but Revenaus On our Maitton, as the French have it. I heerd that mi brother, A. Ward, had becum ritch, be having bin to Salt Lick City, among the Mormon women (he was allns given to the latter, even from a child,) and that, moreover and above, he had got a sho of wax figgers and nevertheless was perfectly decoyed with money ; in which event I would remind him - "I still live."—Webb. And as his absents cost me many teers (I carried aul the water and chopt aul the wood for two years -af ter his leaving us,) and as I am- his only surviving berothor in poor crick omstances (Ery being ritch and Rod• ney when last heord from was in a big contract for furnishing phien toothed koms for the Confederate army, with his bed quarters in Ri6h mund,) therefore I do think "Arty might come and see me. He is over welkome to mi poor but happi hoam. Owe, owe, brother ! if this -should meet your i, think kindly off one who loves not wisely but too well ; but owe, owe, deer Artymas ! do not try to clink° me. 4.6140 WARD. Deer brother, don't go back onto me. 0. W. "Why do I weep 4 thee." 0. W. Otr GENERAL JACKSON'S MOTTO:- "Think before you net, but when the time for action comes, stop think ing." This is the true doctrine.— Many men fail in life and go down to the grave with hopes blasted and prospects of happiness uurealiiodi be caus 'they did not adopt and act up on thrii motto. Nothing so prepares a man for action as thought ; but nothing so unfits a man for action in the course of action. Better by far to adopt some course and pursue it energetically, even though it may not be the best, than to keep contin ually thinking without action: "Go ahead" ought to be printed ,in every young man's hat, and read until it. becomes part of his nature, until he can act upon his judgment, and not be turned from his course by every wind of interested advice. In con clusion we would say "Think before you act ; but when the time for ac tion comes stop thinking.' 14r Young ladies educated to de spise mankind, generally finish their studies by running away with the footman. ser It is dreadful easy to be a fool—a man can be one and not know it. tlt- In choosing your grocer let your motto be "measures, not men." Kr It is said the prettiest girls in ITtah generally marry Young. Mir Why should you be justified in picking the proceeds of a vendor of engravings Y Bemuse he has pie t-ures. Magnificent Sale, GOLD AND SILVER 'WATCHES SEWITEIRV I , & COE On Ilie One Dollar Plan. THE ENTIRE STOCK OF Onc Gold and Silver Watch Manufac tory, Tuw Immense Jewelry Establish ments, One Silver Plating W are-house, One Gold Pen and Pencil Maker.— To be disposed of with dispatch. WITHOUT REGARD TO COST ! riIITE goods arc of fashionable styles and most excel lent workmanship, and are sacrificed in this way to relieve the proprietors from embarrassment occa sioned by a distracting civil war. It should be promi nently stated, also, that they are mostly of AMERICAN MANUFACTURE and therefore greatly superior to the goods imported from abroad and hawked about as the cheapest ever soil. The simple duty on imparted goods, and the high premium on gold (all foreign bills are payable in gold,) amount to more than the entire cost or many of the articles offered by us to the public. To facilitate the sale. ONLY ONE DOLLAR will be charged for any article on our list, and this corn the purchaser need not pay until be knows what he is to get ± This plan accords with the method re cently become so popular for disposing of large stocks of Jewelry and similar productions THE PLAN IS SIMPLE - - - _ The name of each article offered far sale—as "Gold Hunting Watch," "Gold Oval-Bend Bracelet," "Pearl Breastpin and Ear Drops," "Gold Enamelled Ring," 'S fiver Plated Cake Basket," Be., is written on a card and enclosed in a sealed envelope ; these envelopes are then placed In a drawer and well mixed ; then ae an order is received, with twenty•five cents for return postage and other charges, one of the cards or certifi cates is taken at random and sent by first mall to cus tomer, who will see at once what he can get throne dollar. If he is pleased with his fortune he can for. ward the money according to directions on the certill• sate and secure tne prize. If the article awarded should be unsuited to the purchaser—es for example, a set of Pearl Ear-Drops and Breastpin to a young man who could not wear them, and bad no oils -to give them to —we will send any ther article on the catalogue of equal price which may be preferred. Or if, for any reason, you choose to venture no further, then you can let the matter drop where it is and spend no more.
