General Sherman says the greatest de mand ever made • on his moral courage was under the following circumstances : The citizens of San Francisco were celebrating the Fourth of July in the large American theatre, which was pack ed to its utmost capacity. Gen. Sherman was chief marshal, and occupied a seat near the front of the stage. The orator had completed his oration, the poet began his song, when one of his aids, white with fear, made his way down the middle aisle to the footlights, and beckoning the General's ear, whispered to him that the theatre building bad settled a foot and a half in one of the side walls, under the weight of the crowd, and might be expect ed at any moment to tumble on their heads in ruins. The General commanded him to sit down where he was, without turn ing his panic smitten face to the audience. and to say not one word. Re then quiet ly sent an aid out to report the condition of the wall, then gave his apparent atten-. tion to the poem, expecting every moment, as he said, to see the pillars reeling and the roof falling in; but nevertheless cer tain that any general and sudden more rn Jut and fright of the people would has ten the catastrophe and aggravate the ruin, while, by the ordinary slow method of dispersion, the danger might possibly be escaped. The exercise continued calm ly to the close. The audience left the theatre quietly without suspecting their peril, and the terrible destruction was averted by the presence of mind, the self control of the brave soul who, contemplat ing at one glance all the possibilities of the case, decided upon the policy of duty, and awaited without one betraying glance. or treacherous change of complexion, the uncertain, tremendous consequences. 112 - on. Thaddeus Stevens Ni. Stevens has written a letter, taking for his subject the following ex tract from a notice of Senator Henry Wil son's recent speech near Hampton, name ly : •Ile (Mr. Wilson) saki there would be no impediment to Southern representa tive; in Congress if they elected Union men, and closed his remarks by assorting that he would leave Virginia with the full eonvictiln that a Republican Governor, Legislature, and two Senators would be elected." Nr. Stevens comments on this as follows : IV-kiiIIINOTON, April 27 Mn.EDITOR: Such articles as this are calculated to do much harm. They throw obstacles in the way of future reconstruc tion, being quoted and relied on as pledges by the Republican party. Hence much trouble arose from certain expressions con tained in a bill which was reported by the Reconstruction Committee in the Thirty ninth Congress, though never passed. It was perverted, by faction and folly, into an argument against the whole party and Con gress. This generally arises from the careless ness ofthe reporters, and sometimes, doubt less, from the inadvertence of the speaker. No man should make promises for tho par ty. By what authority does any ono say, that by.the election of loyal delegates they will be admitted? By what authority does any one say that Virginia will elect two loyal Senators, while in truth there is no Virginia? Mach is to be done by the peo ple and Congress before any Representative or Senator or State can be recognized. Who authorized any Senator to say there would be no confiscation? These. things are. too flippantly said. I think they bad better be gravely pondered. Who is authorized to travel 'the country and peddle out amnesty? I would say to the. most guilty, expect punishment, and then quietude; but first, a mild confisca tion, to pay those who have been robbed by .disloyal men. These are my wishes, and mine only, perhaps. ' THADDEUS STEVENS. THE leading SouthJrn men being ineli gible to Congress; the Mobile Advertiser proposes to import to the South the "Brick" Pomeroys, Tom S :ymours, Charles- °Tenors, Chancey Burrs, Clem ent L.:Vallandighains, etc , of the North, forthe purfose of Making them Represen tatives of Southern Congressional dis tricts. THIS WONDERFUL, REMEDY was discovered and introduced about twenty years ago by Dr. S. Cheopsns, an eminent Egyptian physician. He had long seen anti felt the want of some reme dy which would strike at the root of disease, and so prevent much of the suffering which the human family was then compelled to endure. The great cptestion was presented to his mind every day in vivid colors as he moved among the sick and dying, and observed the ine ffi ciency of nearly all the remedies then in use. Thus he was lead to think and experiment and atter ten yehrs of study and labor, lie presented to his follow-man the wonderful Zingart Bitters. The effect of this prep aration in the prevention end cure of disease, was so marvellous and astonishing, that. the most flat tering marks of royal favor were bestowed upon hint who discovered it. BB name was placed upon the Roll of Nobles, and a gold medal with the fol lowing inscription—Dr, Cheopsus, the Public Bene thetor—was presented to him by the Viceroy. The preparation has been used in several epidem ics of cholera, both as a preventive and curative measure, and with such great success, that it has been introduced into nearly all the general hospitals of the old world. The old saving that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, applies with marvelous force to cholera, and therefore any remedy that will pro tect tta itgainstth is terrible disease should be freely and persistently used. .'ill pathologists now agree that the cholera poison acts on the excretory organs, and keeps them in working order, must prevent a sufficient accumula tion of the poison to exert its terrible effects on the organism. This is true not only of cholera, but of nearly all other maladies, especially the different forms of fever. The Great Zingari Bitters is just such a remedy as- the above conditions require. Its acts on the organs of excretion and seered on, keeping up a per fect balance between them. This Bitters is com posed entirely of roots and herbs, so nicely con cocted that every organ is acted upon and put in tone. Its taste is pleasant and its effects prompt and lasting. Numerous Cases of the following disease have been cured by it: Cholera, Diarrhcen, Dysentery, Typhoid and Typhus Fever, Fever, Ague, Nervous Debility, Anaemia, Female Irregularities, Dyspop sin, Flatulency, Co;ic, Scrofula. de. IfISIILER'S BITTERS * WILL CURE INTERMITTENT AND REMITTENT FEVER Intermittent Fever is similar to Foyer and Ague mid its origin can be traced to the same causes. As its name implies it is remittent in its effect, recurring at stated periods. As in Fever and Ague this disease is preceeded by a dull, listless feeling. Soon the Fever, accompanied by a - violent head ache, comes on. After raging a length of time it disappears for a few hours, only to return with increased severity, and leaving the sufferer prostrated mentally and sically. In ordinary practice the first re sort of the physician in the treatment of this complaint is quinine and mercury. The disease by this treatment is checked—not cured—and is liable at any tune to return. MISHLER'S BITTERS I=l Cl 3. 0 LE R.A. Mishler's Bitters cures effectually all such cases by inducing a healthy action of tho Liver and by their unsurpassed tonic pro perties prevent a recurrence of the disease. When Mishler's Bitters were first intro duced to the public the propriotor did not feel justified in reconunending it as a spe cific for Cholera During the fall ot 1865. Dr. Misfiles received the following nolo from Jacob L. Baker, Esq., of Lancaster Pa., a member of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Mr. Baker had a great d e al of experience in the treannent 01 Cholera is a druggist of Si Nivel) years sta ng,Wan Hospital Steward in the Jefferson Hospital, hiladelphia, for three years, and is withal a gen tleinail of undoubted integrity and one in whose statement the most implicit confidence, can be placed : Lancaster, November 3d, 1865. Dr. Mishler—Dear Sir:—linowing that the Cholera with its dreadful ravages is now up on our land, and ]mowing that no medi cine now in our country possesses such a caloric influence "which is the vital reme dy for all diseases of this kind," as the Bitters you now making I request you to prepare such a quantity of your bitter as would suit all demands, as I assure you they will be an invaluable remedy, and will be hailed as a blessing by all who will use it. == JACOB L. BAKER Being thus urged, and having noticed the Bitters were constantly curing the most violent cases of Diarrhoea, Cholera Morbus and kindred compl.•tints,Dr. Alishler at last ()tiered his compounds asa cure Mr Cholera The result has exceeded his most sanguine expectations and fully justifies all that Mr. Baker says in his note. It certainly proves that Air. Baker's practical knowledge of medicine filC exceeds that of most doctors who too often dose their patients with de leterious drugs on some absurd theory.— For the purpose of showing that Alishler's Herb Bitters will cure Cholera we give below a few dicta. All intelligent persons who have investi gated the origin of cholera, agree that it is caused by poison introduced and generated into the system by impure water, damp ness, filth and over-crowded rooms with deficient ventilation. This is proved by the fact that cholera always rages worse on board of ships where all of the above causes are found more or less combined. To cure cholera, and also to prevent it,it is necessary to neutralize this position, and that .Mishler's Bitters will do this is proven by the following: The steamship Virginia, arrived at the Port of \ew• York about the middle of April with cholera a board a number of the passengers having died during the voyage with this complaint. Among the passen gers were a family mulled Schmidt, from Baden, Germany. This family was at tacked with cholera. Fortunately for them they had friends living in this city • an caster. Pa.,) who knew the virtues ofillish ler's Bitters and who procured a bottle and sent it to the Schmith family. "When this package arrived at Quarantine, the doctors examined it and confiscated the contents. Another bottle WaS procured and packed in a more secure manner: it safely reached the Schmiths. On its arrival aboard the Oda, Henry Selanith and Christ. Schmith were both laboring under choleric symp toms: Mrs. Marcia Schmith, wife of the former was very bad, not expected to re cover, and a son had died of tine dread com plaint and had been buried theday previ ous. It was in this plight a bottle of Mish ler's Bitters, sent forth like an Angel of Mercy found the poor Schmidt family._ Henry Schmith was the first to try it, and so instantaneous was the relief he experi enced that he gave itto his wife and brother both of whom it at once relieved. They used the entire contents of the bottle and all three were so much relieved that tho physicians permitted them to leave the Virginia, after being confined at quarantine Inboard that scourge ship forty-two says.— The Schmiths proceeded to their relatives in Lancaster, and at an early opportunity called on Dr. Mishler to express their grati tude for the timely relief they had found in his Bitters. Mr. 11 envy Schmid: stated that all the compounds the doctors had given him did no good, but that one glass of Mishier's. Bitters made him feel like a new man, warming his whole system, giving him a healthful heat and musing loin to perspirl, lreeiy. His statement was substantially was substantially as given above, and he further said that if the doc tors had not kept the first bottle front reaching him, his son would yet hrve been living. Mrs. Schmith was still weak from the elicit, of cholera, but the continued use of the Bitters were most surely restoring her aectistorned vigor. It is not to be expected that regular M. ins. will admit that any remedy not to be found in the Dispensatory wilt cure Chol era or any other complaint, but candor compels Dr. D. H. Bissell of the Cholera Hospital ship " Falcon" to admit that he believes Mishler's Bitters to he a " very good Tonic." In reply as to a case of Bit ters that wile sent to Jr by a well known gentleman of Lancaster, he writes as fol lows : Hospital Ship I'ulcott, 1' Qua rsotin , Sew York,JUlle 7th, j Ueorge S. Howliotham, Esq.— Bear Sir : Yours of the 2:3d, inst. is to hand. In re ply, I beg leave to say, that I received the ease of Bitters you sent me for trial A:e., that I gave them to the convalescents in Hospital. I believe them to be a very good tonic Bitters, well adapted to all eases reyuiringTonic remedies. D. H. BISSELL, Physician, Hospital Ship "Falcon." This letter from Dr. Bisselljust alter the reception of the Bitters, and before he had time and opportunity to thoroughly test their wonderful medicinal properties is considered au important endorsement, as that gentleman to-clay occupier the most important position of any physician in America. The passengers and crews o emigrant and merchant vessels that arrive in the Port of New Yo•k from liireign coun tries, are subject to his inspection and con trol, and the great experience he has had in the management of that dread! ul dis ease, Cholera, gives an endorsement by him an unusual importance. This letter together with the statement of the Scbmith family—who while in the Steamer Vir ginia, were under Dr. Bissell's control, shows what, the Bitters have done mid ean do. Another case ofCholera cured by Mish ler,i, Herb Bitters is that of Mr. Pearsol of York county, who, after suffering severely from all the symptom; of Cholera, finally became collapsed and while in this state, (the doctors stating that he was beyond re lief) a friend administered freely,Mishler's Bitters. The effect was instantaneous ; heat was generated in the body, perspira tion was induced and after using one Lot• tie Mr. Pearsol was entirely restored. ler's Bitters cures Cholera by coun teracting the poison which is the cause of the disease. Poison in the systemovhether generated by bad sir, filth, ale., as in Cholera, or introduced by the bite of a venomous snake or mad dog will be ex pelled and all bud sytnptons allayed by the use of Michler's Herb Bitters. The above proves this to be the filet in Cholera and the certificate of Mr.llhinehart proves that Nishler's Milers *ill cure the bite of tl, poisonous snake t Lancaster, July 4th, 1805. Mr. B. Mishler—Sir:—Abouteight weeks since I was bitten in the left hand by a snake, but at the time did not know of what species it was. Immediately after the bite my hand swelled to o very large size, and the poison appeared to be wigg ing np my arm. I suffered great pain in lay hand and arm ; I had to quit work and was afraid I Nvoold be compelled to have my hand amputated. I came to you. and by your advice washed my hand and arm with vote• Ile rb Bitters at the sonic time taking it inwardly. In eleven days I was able to go to work again. The poison was all drawn out and Mishler's Herb Bitters was the only medicine or application that I made use of. Mr. Christian Burns, a near neighbor of mine, went out a clay or two after to the place where I was bitten, and killed what I believe was the same snake that bit me as he caught within five yards of the spot where I was bitten. It proved to be what is called a copper snake; at any rate, whether it was the same ono that hit me or not—one thing is certain— that your Bitters cured the bite of a snake in my case for which 'shall ever be thank ful, as I believe it was the menus of saving my hand. 1 shall be pleased to personally satisfy any one of the truth of the above.
