THE TABLEAU e entertainments gotten up for the benetit of the Presbyterian Sabbath School, of this place, in the shape of Tableaux Vivant.3, and which came off in Odd Fellows' Hall,on Thursday and Friday evenings, were a success. Many of the beetles presented were really beautiful, and we believe the affair gave every satistitetion. Much credit is due the getters-up of the en tertainments. BUILDING LoTS.—lt will be seen by an advertisement in another column, that Messrs. Green and Gesaler offer some very desirable building lots at private sale. These lots are located in the southern part of our borough, and will be sold on reason able and accommodating terms. A. rare chance is here offered to persona in moderate circumstances to procure cheap building lots. TurlivEs.-our town, it appears, is still cursed with thieves. Several houses have lately been entered. The residence of J. G. Hess, on Second street, was entered on Fri day night last, his desk broken open, pa pers rummaged, and a small quantity of silver taken. Two of our citizens wet , . at tacked on Union street a lhw nights ago, and narrowly escaped. Would it not be well for our Council to employ all extra police force? CLAI MED.—The lot or tools round secreted under the steps. in rear of the Pint Otllee, of which we heretofore made inen tion, was claimed, a few days since, hy :\tr. Daniel Stave, a maehinest, o.i Union street. It appears an entrance wa, Raved into his shop through the window, and the said tools stolen therefrom. This of course settles the question, as regards the robbery of the Post Office. It would, no doubt, have been entered had the tools not been found in the "nick of time." " DucKED."—On Tuesday last, as a party of " Yanks" were leisurely floating down the river, on a raft, and stood gazing at our city. the rear oar-steua acci dently swung around, and gently glided up the back of one of the party, and he, in his eflbrts to dodge the critter, lust his bal ance. and tell heailiong hit() the river. It says the Borough shall have power to borrow money, not exceeding in amount one-twentieth of the assessed value of the real and personal estate of the Bo rough, for the grading of streets, building market houses, and other improvements. And to issue bonds or certificates of loan for the payment of the same in such amounts, and payable at such times and at such rates of interest. In another column will be found an ad vertisement, asking for a loan of $15,000. Surely no better investment could be made than to invest your money in Borough bonds. SUNDAY SCImOr. ANNIVEIISARY.--The Sunday School of the E. E. Lutheran Church, of this place, held their anniver sary exercises on Wednesday evening, May Ist. The exercises were of a very interest ing character, and entirely new, for Colum bia; consisting of the presentation of em blems, representing the mottos of the various classes. Each class has its num ber, name, motto, emblem and text of scripture written upon a card, together with the amount the class has contributed ; this card is presented to the Superintendent. by one of the scholars, while another scholar presents the class-emblem. The exercises wore interspersed with singing, which was very good, and ninny of the emblems were very suggestive. We would here like to give a description of each class, mottos, emblems, texts, Ax., but our space forbids. All who took part on this anniversary oc casion, were highly pleased, especially the little children, who will look forward to a similar occasion with a great deal of pride ; it will too, stimulate them with renewed efforts to" do better next time." Appro priate remarks were made by Rev. W. H. Steck, S.C. May, and C. P. Shreiner. This School is in a most flourishing con dition, being under the able superintend ence of Mr. L. C. Oberlin, and Charles I'. Shreiner. The School numbers three hundred and seventy-four teachers and scholars. and is divided into two sections— infant department, consisting of nearly a hand red small ch dre n—the Sunday School proper, consisting of the larger scholars.— Upwards °fa dozen of the larger scholars of time school united with the church, a few weeks since. Altogether this celebration was a decided success, and all wont away well pleased. Althonesh but three months' time was had in which to make the collec tions. nearly one hundred and fifty dollars were raised by the school, to be used for a library. At a future da3 theschool expects to give another entertainment of this kind. May success crown all their efforts. LI:AftNJNO A TRADr3.-- - It was a wise law of the ancient Jews that the sons of even their wealthiest men should be oblig ed to serve an apprenticeship to seine use ful occupation, so that in case of reverse of fortune they might have something to fall back upon. The sonie still eSitits in Tur key, where every man, even the Sultan himself, must learn a trade. How fortu nate would it be now had it been a law in our country. "Would to God I had a trade!"' is the cry of thousands, North anti South, who find themselves rained in pocket, with no immediate prospect of gain ing a livelihood. It should teach parents that whatever else they may give their sons, they should give them mood trade. One of our contemporaries most truly remarks, that a popular idea among our people is that all their sons should adopt clerkships, and the adoption of the business of book keeping as a means of obtaining their live lihood, and ever_ effort is made to give them an education to that end. So far as the etluettt ion or their children in the science of keeping proper accounts is concerned. the idea is a good one, as every young man should have a sufficient knowledge to prop erly manage his own books, should be ever embark in business, but to make book keepers and clerks of all oar boys is a grand mistake. Better place them in a workshop, mill or foundry, where they can learn iodependent trades, which at all times will secure for them employment, and the pecuniary compensation for which 1, ill be at least as much if not more, than the busi ness of accounts. We earnestly advise all parents to teach their eons trades, no mat ter what, so that it is an industrious pur suit; and let us in future be spared the pain of seeing so many stout, able-bodied young men out of employment, and seek ing situations where the pen only can be used. CLEAN] NO THE STR EETS.— WC are pleased to see the activity displayed by our Street Commissioner, Mr. Daniel Chalfant, assitited by a number of worLmen, in clean ing an the streets of our borough. We hope the beginning thus made, will not end until this cleaning operation has extended throughout the whole town. There is no more prominent cardinal vir tue, than cleanliness. Idleness, filth and crime, wall: hand in hand—they are conge nial elements in the "make up" of human depravity, and wherever they exist, health and decency. and all that helps to produce any trait of goodness in an individual, or in a community, cannot thrive. A chief part in the discipline of an army, is to 011f0rl!eab , O. lithe cleanliness; unit it we hail a dis cipline equally well cnnirced, not only in streets :Lad Mit persons aho , it NVOIIIIIIIOI be a bad ii.ea As it is, we are iii U Jul when u•e see the s pi r it ma nire,t”d.:lllcl until it. is extended everywhere, WC feel inclined to repeat the cry of clam, up. We have every Confidence in our efficient chior Bur- Town Council and Board ot• Health, that they will do their duty. Last season, to their credit he it said, they were watch ful and thorough in the discharge of their duties; and we fully believe chit much of the pestilence which otherwise might have gained a foothold in our midst, was averted. Even now, this coming season, will such efforts on the part of the Board of Health he essential to r - welfare of our community. To PARENTS—N EwsrAPEns.—A child beginning to read becomes delighted with a newspaper, because he reads of names and things which are very familiar, and he will make progress accordingly. A newspaper in one year (says an eminent teacher) is worth a quarter's schooling to a child, anti every father must consider that substan tial information is connected with his ad vancement. The mother of the handy, be ing one of its heads, and having a more im mediate charge of the children, should her self be instructed. A mind occupied be conies fortified against the ills of life, and is braced for any emergency. Children amused by reading or study arc, of course, considerate and more easily governed. How many thoughtless young men have spent their earnings in a tavern or grog shop, who ought. to have been rending! How many parents who never spent, twen ty dollars for books for their families would gladly have given thousands to reclaim a son or daugeter, who had ignorantly and thoughtlessly fallen into temptation. TUE TESTIMONY or A 31 ECIIANICAL Exrra:T.—'•ln my opinion, the Grover faker Machines possess the following ad vantages: 1. They use the two threads directly from the spools on which they are wound by the manufacturers of them, and thus save the operator the time and trouble of rewinding one of the threads. The seam sewed is secure and extremely elastic. S. The thread tensions require but very little care in adjusting them. 4. The machines are capable of sewing a greater variety of fabric than any other machines with NN Melt lam acquainted. 5. Tlw seams sewed do not change their appearance by washing, the stitched appearance on one side of the goods remaining permanent, notwithstanding repeated wasnings."—Tcs. timony of Mr. E. S. The Grand Sire of the Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of the United States, having set apart the 26th day of April, as a day of Thanksgiving for the unity of the Order through the late civil war, Susquehanna Lodge, No. 80, and Shawnee Encampment, No. 23, of the 1. 0- 0. F.,of Columbia, commemorated the day in the E. Church, where exercises appropriate to the occasion were had. The members of the Subordinate Lodge and En campment assembled in the Odd Fellows' Hall, at 7 o'clock, P. M., from which they marched in full regalia to the church. ' The exercises at the church were of an in teresting character, and were witnessed by a large concourse of persons who were not members of the Order, After the exer cises at the church, the Lodge and Encamp ment marched back to the, Odd Fellows' Hall, when a motion was unanimously carried, to request from Brother Croinlish, a copy of the discourse Le so eloquently de livered on this occasion, and to otter suitable acknowledgements to the trustees of the church for the use of the building, and to the choir for their excellent music.
