The Pennsylvania Reserves The return of the shattered battalions of the glorious Pennsylvania Reserves to the State requires that some formal notice of the organization, and its services shall be placed on record. When the Presi dent, qn the 15th of April, 1861, called on the loyal States for seventy-five thous and men, sueh overwhelming numbers re sponded from Pennsylvania that she furnished twenty-five regiments instead Of the quOta abetted her to fill ; and then had a sufficient number of additional companies on the march to fill up about pfteen more. The Legislature of the State being called to meet in extra ses sion on the 30th of the same month, a p'an win laid before the Assemble for embo-lying this excess of volunteer, into p State organization for the defence of the border, qr such other service as might be required, with the proviso that they should also -be subject to any call from tho Government of the United States. This plan was sanctioned by the Leg !stature in' an act dated May 15, 1861, providing for the organization of a Re servo Corps, to consist of thirteen regi ments of infantry, one regiment of caval ry and one regimont of artillery. The Whole WAR ,placed under the direction and command of Major-General Geo. .A. McCall, and in accordance with the law were placed in camps of instruction at Easton, Westchester, Harrisburg and Pittsburg.. Tt was not long, however, be fore the necessities of the General Gov 'prnment required that two of the regi ments should be sent to the field, and on the 22d of Juuc, 1861, the regiments of Col. Charles J. Biddle (Buektails,) and Col. Seneca G. Simmons, together with two companies of artillery, under Capt. Campbell, were marched to Cumberland, Maryland, whore they did excellent serv- Ice on the lino of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, at New Creek, Piedmont and elsewhere. Immediately after the disaster at the first Bull Run, requisition was made upon Governor Curtin for the whole corps, and on the 22d of July, 18G1, they were put is motion for . the National Capital, then in eminent peril. They ar rived in season to be of invaluable ser vioe. At the time of their muster into the service of the United States, the 'strength of the corps, officer and men, was 15,856. There commanding officers then stood as follows-- Ist. (Inf'y) Col. R. Biddle Roberta. 2nd. " 44 Wm. B. Maui. Brd. • R. G. Sickels, 4tb. • a Robert G. March, bth. 61 Seneca G. Simmons 6th. * 44 W. W. Col.Magi)..ton tbe command of Col. March's Regi ment, was killed in one of the recent bat tles peer th,e Wilderness. Colonel Hugh McNeill, who succeeded Col. Biddle, of the Thirteenth, was killed at Antietam, and Col. Charles F. Taylor, who succeed ed Col. McNeill, was killed at Gettysburg. Every one of the regiments, except that of Col. Sickels, has had at least two Col onels, and some of them three. At the date of the last official returns befoin us the commanding officers stood as follows : I First, Col. Wm. Cooper Talley. Second, Col. Wm. McCandless. Third, Col. 11. G. Sickels. Fourth, Lieut. Colonel T. T. B. Tappei Fifth, Col. J. W Fisher. Sixth, Col. W. H. Ent. Seventh, Col. IL C. Ballinger Eighth, Col. S. M. Bailey. Ninth, Col. Robert Anderson. Tenth, Lieut. Colonel J. B. Knox. Eleventh, Col. S. M. Jackson. Twelfth, Col. S, M. Harden. Thirteenth, Lieut. Colonel A. E. Niles. Fourteenth, Col. R. M. West. Fifteenth, Col. John F. Taylor. Recent conflicts with the enemy may have made material changes in even this list. Of the above Col. McCandless and Col Fisher commanded brigades at the battle of Gettysburg and in the recent battles, and Col. Sickels was at one time left as the commanding officer of the whole division, After its muster into the service of the United States the Reserve Corps was or ganized as a division, and its first com manding General was 111cCALL. In it s subsequent career itha.s been commanded by Generals Reynolds, Seymour, Meade and Crawford. McCall commanded in. the peninsula campaign, Reynolds in the Pope campaign, Meade in the Antietam and Fredericksburg campaigns, and Craw ford in the Gettysburg and Grant cam paigns. Of its three original brigade commanders, Reynolds became comman der of the First Army Corps, and fell gal lantly at Gettysburg; Meade is now in command of the Army of the Potomac, and General Ord was promoted to the command of the Thirteenth Army Corps, and served with distinction in the several campaigns about Vicsburg. Of the other brigade commanders General C. F. Jack son was killed, • Gen. Seylllolll , is a pris oner, Col. McCandless is at home in Phil adelphia, wounded, Col. Fisher returns with his men, and Gen. Crawford is, we believe, still in the field. It is difficult in the absence of official reports (some of which have never been published), to recite all the glorious names which these battle-scarred veterans' arc entitled to blazon upon their flags'. But among them are Drainesville r Fair Oaks, Gaines' Mills, Charles City Cross Roads, • Cedar Mountain, Bull Run (second), Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spottsylvauia and Bethesda Church, with the last of which the celebrated the ex piration of their term on the last days of May, 1864. While the foregoing cata logue is by no means full, it is sufficient to illustrate the severiety of the fighting through which they have passed. As instances of their losses in battle, we may state that their casualitics in the "Seven days' battles" were, 3074, at Fredericks burg, 1760, out of 4500 taken into the battle, and at Antietam 1188. The men who have just returned arc the remnant battalions of but two b rigades, the third having been detached some time since from the Army of the Potomac for service in West Virginia. Of course all are not to be reckoned as kill or wounded who are missing from their thinned ranks, as many have been discharged f.ir vari ous disabilities, and others have re•en listed for the war. In this hurried sketch we have not attempted anything like a history of the Reserves; that would fill a 'volume, and a proud volume it will be for the corps and for Pennsylvania if it shall ever come to be written by a competent hand. Their service has been truly illustrious, and as they signalized their first entry by saving the National capital, through their prompt march in 1861, and gave the nation its first victory in Eastern Virginia,at Draines vale, so they celebrated their muster-ont by winning a victory with their last blow at Bethesda Church, on the 3lst of X'ay, ,18 . 64.-- . .
