icpkußuiuil. THE FLOWER GARDEN. IQ the pleasure grounds and dower gar den do not mow the gross this mouth, unless there is much rain; but dig out weeds from among the gro«s, as they quickly run to seed, and if allowed to do so they will till the lawn and gross-plots with weeds next year. Every weed de stroyed now will make a thousand fewer next year. Keep walks and avenues free of weeds and grass, and roll them firmly down every week, ami especially after ev ery heavy rain, as then it does far more good. Do not forget to nip off the ends of ver benas, petunias, convolvulus minor and other creeping flowers, by that they Will grow more compact, more leafy and bloom more profusely; and the blooms will grow larger ami allow themselves better above the foliage. Never peg them down nothing is more foolish—it makes them look too lean and Bare of botli blooms and foliage. If nil the annuals that need to be transplanted are not yet set out, dbit with out delay—snch as balsams, asters, zinni as, cockscombs, globe ainaranthus, (Jail- Jardhe. Marvel of Peru, Bro\vallias, etc.— Biennials that were sown from seeds last spring, if not transplanted, do it now— such us Chiua pinks, sweot Williams, co lumbines. Canterbury bells, antirrhin ums, foxgloves, carnation pink*, mule pinks, wall-flowers, gilly llowers, holly hocks, scabious, pansies. etc. When pe- i reuniaU herbaceous* dowers are done! blooming, cut of!' the faded blooms, but | not the stems, and they will bloom better j next year than if allowed to bear.set*ds. — I Cut off all fading bloom.- of roses, and • they will bloom more constant: and do i the same with all dowering plants. Nip ! ofi’the ends of the shoots of morning gio- : ry. maurandia, thunbergia. cypress vines, etc., and they will maintain a lively growth, and bloom until harvl frv«si out* , them off. The Japan lilies, gladiolus and bulbous iris will bo in full splendor this month; tie them up to stakes as they ad- : vauce in growth; stir the soil often ! about tube-roses and tlgridas, and’ tie ] them up to neat stakes :i> they advance i in growth. Do the same with dahlias 1 and chrysanthemums. The cutting up of weed- ami tying up of the flowers, will he the greatest labor in the flower garden this month. Destroy all grubs ami hugs as they appear. Wa tering in the evenings may be needed.— See that orange, lemon, pomegranate, la- pittisporum and oleanders, in tubs, pots and boxes, do not suffer for 'wont of water. Why it is that Potatoes Viki.ii Less than Formerly.— A correspon dent wishes to be told why the yield of potatoes is less than formerly. The rea son is not difficult of discovery. It exists as a law of nature, embracing animals as well as vegetable organisms. These all have excretory os well as secretory func tions. All tli row off effete matter, and this effete matter is hateful to the secreto ry vessels on which vegetables depend for their development, if many crops in succession, of the same vegetable, are grown, the effete matter increases in pro portion to the nutritive, and finally over comes all efforts at successful cultivation. The food decreases and the poison in creases, with every crop. If manure, gen eral or special, is added to. the soil, it in creases the food, but does not necessarily diminish the poisonous effete matter,— One hundred years ago potatoes were but little cultivated, and most grounds were left fresh for their production. Thou and long afterwards, 400 bushels was not an extraordinary yield. Now the increased taste for its use, ami the great augmenta tion of our people, in number and ability to purchase, have made it necessary that groat breadths of land should bo used for its growth. In consequence of this, much of the land has become weakened to a de gree that invites destructive enemies to feed on its substance—to take advantage of its weakened organization. Hence the rot, so called, and other ailments. Moth er earth is a good mother, but like her sox generally, she has a taste for variety in outer adornments. She will change her dress, even the most durable of her fabrics—her forests. These are ever va rying in composition, and finally thrown off altogether for grasses. These, again, have their round of varieties, and in a long course of years give place to other plants. Mother earth will have her way and those of us, her children, who beat understand her requirements, will par take most largely of her bounties. Selecting Poultry .Meat.—a young lurkey has a smooth leg, uiul a soft bill, anil if fresh, the eyes will be bright anil’ the feet moist. Old turkeys have still' scaly feet. \ oung fowls have a tender skin, smooth legs and the breast hone yields readily to the pressure of the finger. The best'are those that have yellmv legs. The feet and legs of old fowls look as though they had seen hard service in the world. Young ducks feel tender under the wings and the web of the foot is transpa rent. The best are thick and hard on the breast. Young geese have yellow hills, and tho feet are yellow and supple. The skin may be easily broken by the head «f a pin; the breast is plump and the fat White. An old goose is unlit for the hu man stomach. Fowls are most easily picked if scalded hut this renders tho skins liable to be lorn, and consequently they will not look so nice. Moss on Apple Trees.—The moss on your young apple tree-sis not the cause, but rather in consequence of the decay of tho trees. If your trees were properly set, and if you have kept the ground cul tivated to some hoed crop since, us von should do, applying a coat of manure around each tree, for a space of five to ten feet, according to size of trees, and fork ing it in above the roots of the trees • their decay most he attributed to some cause beyond the science of pomologists to state what it is, without being present on the premises where the trees are grown. Sometimes severe frost will so injure tho trunks of tipple trees, as to cause the bark to split open and peel olf • and if your trees have been thus injured’ it is probably the cause of their decay Preserving Okra,—One of the most healthy and nutritious vegetables is the okra, which is raised in such abundance l[‘" llr climate- We are surprised that so little attention is given to preservin'' it for use all through the winter, when it can be done so easily and cheaply. The following recipe for doing it is furnished by one of our most practical and experi enced gardeners and agriculturist* : Take a clean barrel, sprinkle salt in the bottom cover the bottom;) then law dpwn a layer of okra evenly over tho surface of the salt; then, on this, another layer of okra, as before, and soon till the barrel is full; or you have put as much ns desired covering tile whole, when done, with a thick layer of salt. Line Fence.—Tlio man who has bought the larm adjoining yours has no right’ to demand that the division of the fence should be changed from what it was when the previous owner held it, if that division was equitable ; and the last own er is bound to keep the aaine half in re pair, that his predecessor did. No m li ter how much he neglected to keep such fence in good repair, the last owner steps into his shoes, and cannot get rid of the liabilities to make such fence, as the law directs between different owners. So?i 0| f B fi? IN -D I- Y Houses.—A correspon dent of the Boston Cultivator says that this is a disease in horses.
