The former look only to the . fact that the line will cross their properly, and imagine they be injured thereby— the latter in placing a road before the public are to opt to devote their attention only to the prqflts which are to be made by its business; a very natural conse quence of this is that the very people wilt are In reality most interested in the con struction Of a road, are thh only ones to throw obstacles in Its way; No railroad can be built, wlthoutgreat ly increasing' the . value of all property within ten miles of its line, and of course the nearer the road the greater the in crease in value. This has been demon strated a fact beyond all possibility of doubt by practical results In the case of every road wlthont exception, and it is a fact so plain that every man of common sense will admit it at sight. It follows that every one living or owning property on a proposed route, should do hls.utmost to secure the construction of the rood.— - All should be willing notonly to give the ■free ’right of way, but every facility for the prosecution of the work, and such pe cuniary hid as they can afford. Let us apply this principle to the pro posed South Mountain road. It will pass through a region comparatively lindevel-, oped, but which a railroad will soon make one of ■ the very richest sections In the State, will be Increased-in Value one houured or even two hundred per, cent. Our country friends may be aston ished at such figures, but.experience in like coses'demonstrates that they are not too high. Why, the Immediate increase in the value of property on the line of the road, will bo enough. to pay the cost of two such roads. Let every property hold er, then, give the right of way to the hew company in the. lull guarantee that it will pay a hundred fold. , ' SmPJPJSNSB ÜBG ITEMS. Muddy StbEEtSi— Owing to the Im passible gulf of mud our streets have be come a perfect terror to pedestrians, and we feel safe In saying that even horsemen feel unsafe lest an unfortunate step may bring them deep in the affections of moth er earth. Underground communications are still kept up by means of the cross ings, supposed to have been laid . once upon a time, otherwise a* cable would have to be laid to find out whether your neighbors over the way were still in yotJr midst.. This thing has become an 1 intol erance, and we think it high time we rid ourselves of the odium of having strangers recommend “a ferry system of doing business” in bur town; This thing cjn be remedied by Opening Orange Street to the Walnut Bottom Bead, and then in stead of having our .business part of the town ground up into'a mud pond in win ter, and a dust mill In summer, we could cross and fecroas with satisfaction, and our merchants could expose their wares without having them ruined. “ A word to the wise is sufficient,’' and on these grounds we advise our Republican friends ofithe false economy school to sayethe, expense of printing resolutions on the head of their ticket, for this Spring election. ■ - Improvement.— “ The old eye sore,’ .located so near the square and known as the. long:porch building, is now under going a .complete over-hauling,/ Messrs.
