' Dr. LutKttlhnrg, of New Orleans, told me that he once packed lip one of these nests, with the cggS.m a'box for the museum of St- Pelers uiftgi but was recommended before he closed it io sec that there was no danger of the eggs being hatched on the voyage: On opening one, a young aligator walked out, and soon followed by the rest,'about a hundred, which he fed in his house, where they went up and down stairs, whining and barking like young puppies.— Lycll, the Geologist. II Catling Down. A late excellent Governor of this Stale used to tell a story of a famous sportsman, who hot only made long shots in the field," but likewise nt the board. In a 1 word, ha was fond of denl ing'sotrlewhat in the marvelous while recount ing his exploits. ..Being aware 1 that he carried this practice Ib.a rather unwarrantable length, he commissioned his favorable colored servant, Pete, to give him a bint when be found him Blftaohing the truth too much. . Oho dity, dining in company with sundry oth^.feetitlemen, ho told some prodigiously large stories ; and, among the rest, of a fox he , had, killed which had a tail twenty feet long. -Honest Pete thought this was quite too extra vagant; and as he stood behind bis master’s chair, he gave him a nudge. - - ■ “Twenty, did I say? perhaps I’m a little 100 fastr-but it was all of fifteen.” Pete gave him a second nudge. “Eh !■' let me see. ’Twas ten at least.” A third nudge. “ ’Twas every inch of five.” A fourth nudge. •‘■’Twas three any how.”. A fifth nudge. TDho sportsman took all these hints in good part until ho received the last ; when, thinking his story was cut down quite enough he turn* ed'suddenly to his servant, and exclaimed: “Whys hang itj.Pete, won’t you let my fox have any tail ?” ' '' ; , , Humber of Stars. To the naked; eye are displayed, it is believ ed, about three thousand stars, down to the sixth, magnitude;, and of these, only twenty are of the first, and seventy of'tho second mag nitude; Within the last two centuries, the tel escope has revealed countless millions pf stars, more and more astonishingly numerous the fur ther the space.it penetrated. Every increase in the .dimensions and power of instruments, which successful'improvements in optical science have attained, has brought into view multitudes in nujnerable, of objects invisible before, so that, for'anything that experience has hitherto taught the number of stars may be really infinite. Those rendered instance by the 1 gteat power of Lord Eosse’s telescope—are at such an ’inconceivable distance, that their light, travelling at the rate of 200,000 miles a second, cannot arrive at our planet in less than fourteen thousand years. The light of the sun Ukes 160 minutes to move to the Georgium Si dus, the remotest planet of our own solar sys tem ; and so vast is the unoccupied space be tween uS and the nearest'star, that light would require five years to pass through it. But as the telescope has disclosed to us objects many times more remote than such a star, the crea tion of a new star at so great a distance could not become known to us for many thousand years ; iC7”“Wlio are you ?” asked a long-legged Oonneetiouit fellow, of a rather overbearing conductor on the Haven Railroad. “I am the conductor on these cars. ” “And all the folks I in ’em, I s’pose. Wall, I swow ! ef that.ain’t apootygo! .You a conductor of other folks, and don’t know how-to conduct yourself!— Gosh!” C 7” A woman is either worth a good deal or nothing. If good for nothing, she is not worth getting jealous for if she be a true woman, she will not intentionally give any cause for jealou sy. A man is a brute to be jealous of a good woman—a fool to be jealous of a worthless one —but is double fool to cut his throat for either of them. One of our exchanges perpetrated this'poem,’ and; then subsided“ The wind it blew, the snow it flew, and raised particular thunder— with skirts and hoops, and chicken coops—and all such kind of plunder.” O I N. V A L.I DS . •. Br. Hardman* Analytical Physician. Physician for Diseases of the Lungs, Throat and. Heart—formerly Physician to the CINCINNATI MARINE HOSPITAL also to INVALIDS RETREAT. Author of « Letters to Invalids,”.is coming!. Amu, APPOIN.T3IEN.rs. DB. HARDMAN,.Physician for disease ol the Lungs, (formerly Physician to Cincin nati Marine Hospital,) will be in attendance at his rooms as follows: • Carlisle; (Mansion House,) Thursday, April 29, 1858. Shipppnsburg, (Union House,) Friday,April 30. Dr.HardmantreatsConsumplion, Bronchitis, Asthma, Larryngittis, and all diseases of the throat and lungs by medical Inhalation, lately used in ■ the Bromtori Hospital, London. The great point in the treatment of all human mala, dies is to get at the disease in the direct man ner. All medicines aro estimated by their nc. tipn upon the organ requiring relief. This is the important lact upon which Inhalation is based. If the stomach is diseased wo take mod icine directly into the stomach. If the lungs .are diseased, breathe or inhale medicated, va pors directly into the lungs. Medicines are the antidotes to disease and. should bo applied to ■tho vory seat of disease. Inhalation is the ap plication of this principle to the treatment of ,tha lungs, for it gives us direct access to those intricate alt)cells and tubes which lie out of yqaoh of every other moans of administering medicines. The reason that Consumption, and "other diseases of the lungs have heretofore re aisled all treatment has boon boon because they had never been approached in a direct mnnnoi by medicine. They were intended to act upon the lungs and yet were applied to the stomach. Their action was intended to bo local, and yet they wore so administered that they should act constitutionally, expending immediate and prin cipal action upon the unoffending stomach, whilst the foul ulcers within the lungs wore un molested. Inhalation brings fbo medicine in direct contact with the disease, without the dis , advantage of any violent action. Its applica tion is so simple that it ean be employed by the youngest infant or feeblest invalid. It does mot derange the stomach, or interfere in tlje least degree with the strength, comfort, or business of tbs'patient. Other diseasuirtated. —ln relation to fhp fol lowing diseases either when complicated with |ung afflictions or existing alone, I also invito consultation. I usually find them promptly cu ■ablo.
