VALtE of A.Dvravnenvo.--,A writer in the New York Tribune makes this sensi ble suggestiolb .which we gommend to business men generally: Many a „business man is afraid of the expense of advertising, and y'et will pay high rents fora-prominent storoto exhibit his wares, and put up expensive signs, and seems not to know that both are expensive methods of advertising. The instances of men who have made fortunes by advertising are too numerous to gnestion; but 'how have they done it ? By exercising good judgment ' • by know ing how, where and when to advertise.— The whole secret is there. s Advertising has become a science, and unless its princi ples are adhered to, large amounts of mone a fay be expended to no purpose.— To rtise successfully requires more knowledge of the means than most busi ness men possess and more thought than they have•time - to bestow to it. Hence many large houses find it profitable teem ploy competent men who make it their specialty. I venture the opinion that every person experienced in advertising will bear me out in saying that the business man who controls the sale of an articlethat supplies an actual want, need not fear to' invest largely in advertising, if he does it with intellirmtlact said discrimination as to the use of the best means. Under proper circumstances, be cannot fail of realizing a fortune. • COLD Wits.rozn.—As cold weather is almost at hand, and every person will be required to have Winter Clothing, we would remind them that Frank Cunning ham has just returned from the city with a large assortment of Ready-Made Cloth ing 041 kinds,. also Cloths, Casaimers, Beavers, &c., winch he is prepared to manufacture into good fitting garments at the shortest notice. CARAVAN' AND CIRCUei.—J . M. French's great Oriental Circus and Egyptian Caravan, is without doubt the finest and most extensive exhibition that has ever been organized. This `Colossal Exhibition will' visit Gettysburg, living two exhibitions, one in the-afternoon and one in the - evening, on Tuesday, October 18th. This Exhibition includes a number of remarkable animals ; among the won ders to be noted is the mammoth lion den, containing six fierce Kaffra lions, a herd of sixteen huge camels: and the great elephant,Empress, the largest animal na ture ever produced, the calf elephant, Sul tan, the smallest of the kind ever seen in America, of which a fuller description is given in the advertisement. It is some thing well worth seeing, and we have no doubt the immense tent will be filled both afternoon and evening. A fide street dis play will take place in the morning at ten o'clock. The following we clip from the Donnelsonville Herald" of June 9th. "J. M. French's Circus and Oriental caravan exhibited in Worcester. to-day, .and was attended by an immense crowd of people. The entry into the city was beautiful beyond description. The Den of liitins and the 'dark nude' sons of Eas tern dimes mounted upon camels, gave a decided Oriental appearance to this gorge ous pageant. The Band, urster the leader ship of W. D. Story, far surpasses any.: thing yet before the public, s and is worthy the attention of all mulical admirers.— The Drove of Camels and Den of Lions are alone worth the price of admission, and when looked upon, at once reminds one of the wildness of the Jungle. Mr. Clark, the Clown, excels all that have gone before him, making true the old adage, that he who plays the comic must need to be of brilliant intellect. Mr. William Dut ton, in his grand double Somersault act is truly wonderful. In fact,ye take pride in saying that - French's Circus and Car avan by far excels all that hive gone be fore it both in reference to its Ry - hibitions and the courtesy of its management." WELL DONE.—Although Franklin town ship gives 105 Democratic majority, we learn that the Republicans on Tuesday elected Mr. Ephraim Newman Township Assessor by a decided majority.' inrWe direct attention to the advertise ment of the Howe Sewing Machine in an other column. - it WINTER IS COMING.—And to make ready for it and accommodate their friends., Col. Although somewhat conservative by nature, we are not opposed to progress,. and conceiving it our solemn duty, as a public-journalist, to ascertain whether Schnapps Soda Wa ter was a proper thing to be recommended to our subscribers, we tried it. The re sult may be stated in a few words. The mixture is good to take, and if our stom ach is like stomachs in general, it is con genial to that part of the human organiza- tion.
