' By this we mean the urine of animals and solutions of the solid excrements 'chiefly, and we might include the soap suds and house slops. There is an int mew waste, annually, upon :nearly all lams, in the shape. of liquid manures. Probably few farmers are aware of the magnitude of their loses in this way of the best fertilizing material, that. which I is prepared for the immediate use of plants. We all know how rich in am monia' is urine, and how few there are who save it to the extent that its value would warrant. Much of the most valuable portion 'of the solid excrements is .that which is readily soluble in water. And in how many barnyards can we find large pools of this dark liquid, or see it running off down a slope, perhaps into some brook or gully and utterly wasted. If such farmers could see the actual value of the fertilizing material thus lost, rolling from their purses in the shape of dollars and _cents, they ,would work almost night and day to stop it. Yet, in many cases, year by year, these golden streams are flowing from their purses, and a loss of a single dollar would disturb them more than the direct waste of a hundred times that dollar's worth in the form of liquid manure. These very• farmers acknow ledge their error, if told of it, but they have some excuse for neglecting it for the time. The first error, however, is in having so !quell liquid manure in the barnyard except the urine of animals, and the materials should be at hand for , absorb ing that.—Journal of Agriculture. .OF all the dreary places deliver us from the dreary farm houses which so many people call "home.',' Bars for a grout gate; chickens wallowing before the door; pig pens elbowing the house in the rear; scraggy trees never .cared for, or no trees at all; no vines over the door; no lawn; no flowering shrubs; no neatness; no trimness. And yet a lawn, and trees, and a neat walk, and a pleas ant porch, and a plain fence around all do not cost a great deal. They can be secured little by little, at odd times, and the expense hardly be felt. And if ever the time comes when it is best to sell the farm, fifty dollars so invested will often bring back five hundred. For a man is a brute who will not insensibly yield to a higher price for a such a farm when he thinks of the pleasant surroundings it offers his wife and children. AN ASTO3.TISLUNO COIV.—W. Sweet, of Pompey, New York, writes to the Farmer's .Club:, "I have a grade short-horn cow, eight *, years old; dropped a calf February 6th; feed--good clover hay and four quarts mixed oats and barley meal; milk—for ty-two pounds per day, which made sev enteen and a half pounds Of butter per week unto March 6th. Wanting to in crease that figure, added twelve quarts potatoes to the feed; got forty-six pounds of- of milk per day, which made fourteen and a half pounds of butter: Dropped the potatoes after one week's trial, and again got seventeen and a half pounds butter. This small experiment would prove that potatoes are better for l 'milk than for butter."• THE only prisoner in the Nantucket jail notifies the authorities that if they don't fix up the jail so that the sheep can't get in to bother him, he will be blowed if he will stay in there. To cleanse and invigorate the stomach and to stimulate the liver to healthy se ttees. use SCHENCK'S MANDRAKE PILLS—The daily increasing demand for these pills is the best evi. dencd of their Value. Thousands upon thousands of boxes are sold daily. Why? Simply because they act promptly and efficiently. Invalids who may not end it convenient to an op Dr. Schenck in person are informed that full and complete directions for use accom each package or the MANDRAKE PIL . UIMoNIC sYRUP AND SEAWEED TONIO.--These medicines wit cure consumption uuiess th beyonde so tar gone that the patient is entirelyhe reach of medical relief. It may be asked by those who are not familiar with the virtues of these great remedies, - How do Dr. Schenck's medicines effect their wonderful cures of consumption?" The answer is a simple one. They begin their work of restoration by bringing the stomach, liv er and bowels into an actve healthy condition. It is food that cures this formidable disease.— isCHENCK'S MANDRAKE PILLS act on the liver and maimach, promoting healthy secretion, and removing the bile and silme which have moulted from the inactive or torpid condition of these organs, and of the system generally. This slug gish state of the body, and the consequent accu mulation of the unhealthy substruices named prevent the proper digestion of food, and, as a natural consequence creates disease, which re sults in prostration and finally in death. sCHENCK'S PULMONIC SYRUP and SEA WEED TONIC, when taken regularly, mingle with the food, aid the digestive organs, make good rich blood, and as a natural consequence, give flesh and strength to the patient. Lel the faculty say what It may, t h is is the only true cure for con sumption. Experience has proved it beyond the well whooubt, and tbousands are to-day alive and a few years since were regarded as hopeless cases, but who were induced to try Dr. Schenck's remedies, and were restored to perma. cent health by their use. One of the Ant steps the physician should take with a consumptive patient is to invigorate the system. Now how is this to be done? Certainly not by giving medicines that exhaust and enervate — medleinesthat impair instead of improve the functions of the digestive organs. Dr. Schenek'S medicines cheese -Die stomach and bowels of all substances which are calcidated to Irritate or weaken them. They create an appetite—promote healthful digestion—make good blood, met as a consequence, they invigorate and strengthen the entire system, and more especially those parts which are diseased. If this cannot be done, then the case must be regarded as aho less one. If the physician finds It Impossible to make a rartgaT Fart 801101 a, If the diseased person ataxia of good nourishing food and pro city digest it, It is Impossible that he can A- in aud strength ; ad it Is equally impoble to bring a patient to t h is condition 30 long as the liver is burdened with diseased bile, and the stomach laden with unhealthy slime. Almost the Arstest made to the physician by a oonsuroptive patie nt is that he will prescribe medicines that wi remove or allay the cough, night sweats and chills, which are the sure at tendants on consumption. But this should not be done, as the cough Is only an effort of nature to relieve Itself, and the night sweats and chills are caused by the diseased lunge. The remedies or dinarily prescribed do more harm than good T_ impair the functions of the stomach, impede beam', diseasdig e. estion, and aggravate rather than cure, the There Is, after all, nothing like facts with which to substantiate a position, and it is upon tuts that Dr. Schenck relies. Nearly all who have taken his medicines In accordance with his directions have not only been cared of consumption, but, from the fact that these medicines set with won derful power upon the digestive ortitux, patients thus cured speedily oda th e y Csmomes the system of all toipurniee they lay, the fonemeton for a solid. substantial structure. Restoring these Organs to health, they :create an appetite. It soon becomes evident to the observer that some depressing influence is checking the development of the body.
