Atax 1411 egziatintli March 11,1b70. 4GF - i - t; E SO IL. I t is' often a question in choosing how cheap Is the lantf? and how near is the market? Bitt a question of (toile as much importance is, what are iii..facilties forkeeping up the fertility of the soil? More common sense is re quired to judge properly of this than of any other question possible.. The rice of land and the market question can be ascertained on the spot, and at the time ; but the manure question is one which requires judgment and foresight to determine satisfactorily. The The Anicrican Farincr, of Baltimorez says the great Virginia cry now is, "smaller grain-fields and larger pas toreA," meaning thereby that more home-made manure is one of the essen tials of good farming. We of the North have partially learned this lesson already ; but a look at many of our neighbors' fields, and of our own, for that matter, will show that we have rather got the lesson by rote, as we often do our learning In the schools, and not that we thoroughly understand its importance. We have rarely known a farmer near a large town, who kept his farm in a high state of fertility, who did not make money by farming ; while we have noticed those who failed were usually those who did not estimate the importance of high manuring, or neglected it if they did know how. Yet we have known a few who have failed in attempting to manure well, through acting on the idea that inanure was profitable at any coat. This is a' great mistake. The whole subject Is one re quiring a great amouut of, good judg ment—the exercise of the strongest: common sense. BATHING HORSES.—A correspon dent says he washes sweated horses in cold water with beneficial results, both in summer and winter,. After wash ing, the animal should be rubbed dry, as far as practical and the legs especial ly. Should tile hair on them be too long to admit ?f this being sufficiently done, flannel bandages should be put on, and a woolen rug thrown loosely over, but without the roller. In the course of an hour . the horse will be tol erably dry, and should then have an- other rub down, and be clothed In the ordinary manner. If horses were (. 1 treated in a more rational manner than is often the case, with pure air and ecrnpulous cleanliness, disease would be far less common. What more refreshing to a man after a hard day's shooting, or other labori ous exercise, than a warm or cold bath ? And . I believe it to be so to the horse. To the tired huntera warm foot-bath and fomentation,if the animal is sufficiently quiet, is most refreshing. Some years ago I visited the royal sta bles at Buckinghan Palace. There, as I was informed—and at :the time witnessed the operation—eveig horse, summer and winter, was washed from head I V" of with cold water, after re turns rom work, no matter whether it had been out one hour or six: After the ablution, scraping, scrubbing, etc., a kind of web cloth was thrown over to admit of evaporation, and the horse was afterward rubbed down and cloth ed as usual, in the course of an.hour or two. I consider the pleb rational and conducive to the health of the horse, if only ordinary care is taken. BREEDING BOWS require a variety of nourishing food, clover, hay, milk, boiled potatoes, bran,•etc. Do not ex pose to cold winds or drifting snow. SOME farmers leave their grindstones exposed to the hot sun, In summer, causing them to harden, besides injur ing the wooden frames. Rev. Mrs. Phoebe A. Hanniford has re ceived arid accepted a call to the pastorship Of a Universalist.chnrch in New Haven. OFFICIAL DIRECTORY El= Pees iden tJudge—ltobertJ.Tigher . Associate Judges—Joseph J.
