As we are frequently asked the ques tion, can a ringbone be cured, and as a great many remediesare recommend ed for the care •)f this prevalent and troublestime disease, we will give a short discrlption of the nature and causes of ringbone. liiturbon....wersts in bony growth. technically called crostosis, -*wending around the lower part ,of the Ihnb— hence the name ringbone. The situa tion of this osseous disease is immedi ately above the horif, involving the pastern joint, and not unfrequently to the fetlock joint. In cases of - long standing the motion of %the pastern joint becomes completely destroyed, and the union of the bones takes place by an abnormal growth. This is call ed the Nooses of ancheosis. Ring bonze may either affect the fore or hind limb, and generally proves a very troublesome disease, and in very many cases, produces lameness. In Canada ringbone is a very common dhiease; and in many instances can be traced to hereditary tendencies, as certain breeds are very liable to be affected with osseous diseases generally, and ring bone in particular; and as long as ringbone horses and mares are kept for breeding purposes, this disease will continue to increase. There may be exceptional cases, where the disease is the result of injury, that a mare affect ed with ringbone may bear strong and sound progeny ; but in nine cases out of ten, the progeny of ringboned mares are apt to be aftbcted with ringbones, sprains, etc.; and in proof of this how often, do we see colts affected with ring bodes when they are young, long be fore - they are subjected to workii- We therefore unhesitatingly assert that the great cause is 'hereditary predispoti- tiob, or faulty conformation. No doubt there are . alsO immediate excit- ing causes, as rapid driving, and rough usage of any kind. Ringbone is easily detected. It shows itself as an enlargement extending around the pastern joint, and when forming is usually accompanied with lameness, the lamenees being increas ed by pressure or flexion of the joint. In severe and oontinued oases, the whole muscles of the Limb wash) to a great extent, and the horse loses condi- tion from the extreme pain. The treatment of ringbone generally is very unsatisfactory, and it is an in- curable disease in so far as removing the bony growth, though curable in some instances in so far as removing the lameness. The horse should have rest, and the joint lie kept as easy as possible, and cooling or soothing ap- plications should be used for some time, after which blistere"may be used with good effect. One of the best and safest applications is the biniodide of mercury ointment applied. The actua cautery, or firing iron, in some cases is necessary, and after either firing or blistering the horses should be kept from work fora lengthened period, and It is generally necessary to blister a Intervals of ten or fourteen days. Canada Farmer \ COTSWOLD SHEEP.-Mr. Beale Brown writes as follows to Bell's Messenger: "We Cotswold ram breeders are twit ted in most quarters because we do not continue to show sheep at the. agricul tural shows in England. I consider a man must be mad to attempt to show sheep against ahearlings computed at sixty-live pounds a quarter; which I am informed they were for this year at Manchester, and measuring near - six feet round ; four Inches more than the old rams. Now, I said once, the shep herd ought to have hid the prize for scuiptUring before some restriction was pitt upon shearing, and I am sure the poor fellows should now . have the prize ; for what labor they must have, and what skill in administering all the stimulating drugs the Apothecaries' Hall can supply., Is not this a bur lesque upon prizes for breeding ani mals? And then the men who pur chase them have the same disappoint ment a friend of ,mine had some years ago, who purchased some of these sheep, and when the fat was off them said they had necks like coach horses. I am sure our Judges must have weigh ing machines instead of massuringlape, and we must limit the weight of diffe rent animals, which strikes me as the only way to check this. How many tons of fat are now put upon rams on ly to deceive the public andinJure the animals, all of which must be physick el off again." HO/LE ON THE Fenat.—The farm preserves the family in its integrity. The home has in that charming word, and that still more charming thing, the fireside—around which parents and children gather, and wbere-tbe bright and cheerful blaze upon the hearth is but a true type of the flame of love that glows in every heart.— The parents have been drawn together, not by the sordid motives of wealth, or by the ambitious desire of social dis play, but for the personal qualities seen in each other. The glory of that fireside to the husband %Abet the wife Is there, and to wife that he is there. Here they gather at morning, and at evening, and at noon. The board is almost always surrounded with the same circle. Here they spend the long winter evenings together, enlivened with the school-books of children, the newspapers and journals, ant works of history and science. A oonstant homogeneous influence goes forth from this circle to the young rhearts that are moulding there. Paternal vigilance guards the young against wicked oom panions. IT the comprehensive relig ious influence are right in that home, they will all grow up to be good citi zens, to be the pillars of society, wher ever their lot . ay be cash- The sons follow the business of their father as soon as their labors are • available.— They are with him in the field, and by the way, and at home.
