When I see a farmar attending alt the political conventions, and knowing every man in town that votes his ticket, and yet, to save his own neck, couldn't tell who is president of his county agriculiural socie ty, or where the tale was held last year, I "unanimously" come to the conclusion that the poor soul has got a crack in hii hog trough. When I see a farmer buying guano, but wasting ashes and heit-manure, trying all sorts of experiments except intel ligeut hard work and economy, gelling the choicest of Ikeda regardless of-cost, then planting them - regardless of cultivation, growing a valley of fruit call Sour Tart Seedling, and sweetening it with sugar, pound for pound. keeping the front fields rich while-the back lots are growing bp with thistles, briars, and elders, contribu ting to the Choctaw-Indian fund, and never giving a cent to any agricultural Society,. When.l seea farmer spending his time traveling in a carriage, when he has to sell his corn to p ty the hired, help and his hogs are so lean that they have to lean against the fence to squeal; I rather lean to the con elision that somebody that stays at home will have a lien on the farm, and that some day the bottom will come entirely out of hie hog-trongh.—Prairk Farmer. WOW 70 XIAIWE 000 D POTATOES. J. T. Merriman writes to the Ohio Far mer its follows : Many people think that potatoes will grow, no matterhow poor the Fred is—the refuse of what is left of eating —while others plant mixed varieties, all sorts planted together, and then complain of poor potatoes. I have been as observer of the management in raising potatoes of different kinds for fifty years ; the way I have •bad ,the best crop is to plow up a piece of greensward of good depth, from owl to fifteen acres, as the individual may Want, tht34_ harrow lengthwise until it is well mellowed up, then diagonally, so as to hare it well 'mellowed; then . with a light ehovel-plow mark opt three feet a part and not cross it, and les sure to have your rows east and west, (corn rows "should "be north and syuth,) so the sun will not burn or heat the bills in hot weather. My plan is to sort the potatoes, taking out the two biggest sizes to use, then take the three next sizes, and leiwe the two least and all the ill-shaped ones of all sizes. As like produces like of ill ones," that is why potatoes degenerate, I put plaster or gyp sum about one tablespoonful in the hill, when 1 drop my potatoes. I plant them one way and cover with my hoe ;" I plant rows three feet apart, the hills two feet apart. My mode is to put one potato or half in the hill with the plaster, of what ever kind of potatoes I plant; the plaster halps to start the potatoes and keep them from rotting, which is an object of late years. One potato or one piece is enough for a hill. ^ By planting on sward land the potatoes are dry and mealy, while on land that has been plowed several times, the potatoes will be soggy. The potato crop ii becoming more profit able. and It is time that farmers should took out for good seed and plant good and not poor kinds or poor potatoes. It takes ten or twelve bushels of seed potatoes to plant an acre as I plant, and generally from three hundred to four hundred bushels pro duct. I cultivate potatoes when they are up about two inches high, then use, a shovel plow, so as to have them good to hoe. I hoe them when about a foot high, and hill them not to high. Some farmers plow a deep furrow, drop in their potatoes and plow in their.seed, plow up the hills and plow out their potatoes. This is hoeing potatoes with a vengeance ; potatoes bruis ed; one hundred bushels per acre, and email, poor ones at that. Potatoes are one of our staples for family support, and should be ranted wits► ears to get good ones. &torso AT num. —The Ruck County In feingencer, whose editor, Mr. Darling ton, Is the active Secretary of the Agilcul tural Society of that county, thinks as we do au the queston of horse-racing at Far mer's fairs, refers to an addrede of the Pres ident of the New York Society, in which he says that the Legislature ought to with draw k its aid from agricultural societies which encourage racing and shows and games of all kinds.
