This depar.tment will be ar ranged so as to prevent the odor from cooking reaching the main building. Not withstanding the size of the building, and the immense amount of material and la bor involved in its erection, Dr.. SMITH, the energetic* contractor, is pressing the work with great rapidity, and expects to have it finished y the middle of June.— He has between 40 and 50 carpenters at work, divided into four or five gangs— each set of workmen, under experienced foremen, prosecuting distinct branches of the Nl;'ork —thus 'avoiding confusion and en-uriug rapid work. Besides the 11,b I proper, other improve ments in the grounds are going .11 under Dr. Smith's direction, giving employ nient to a number of hands. Besides the build ing of a large Cistern, Privies, &e., orna mental trees are being planted, lenses re moved, walks and drives laid out—it be ing the intention to throw the grounds front the Spring to the Mill road, 105 acres, into one enclosure or park, includ ing the two groves east and West of the Spring. Few even of our citizens have any idea of the extent of the improvements ruder way and in 'contemplation, and in a few months the grounds will hardly be recog nized by the casual visitor. The Hotel itself will be an imposing bulding, and we trust the most sanguine expectations of the Company may be realized. MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE.-- 7 Mr. George Thomas, residing the last year near Frizzleburg, Md., but formerly of New Oxlbrd, Adams county, has disap peared very mysterously, causing the deepest anxiety to his wife and friends.— It appears that on Tuesday morning week he left:honie on horse back.'f , r Hanover, and at the Savings Institution there lilted 1,A.:200, with interest, which had reetion de posit. Remaining with a 'friend over night, he started on Wednesday 'morning to go to Gettysburg, he said. But there is no truce of his coming Jiere. - On Thurs day morning, however, his horse was found in thestable, with saddleand bridle oft, but Thomas nowhere to be foural.— There are several theories iu reward to this strange affair—one that be may have been murdered oti the way, and the horse re turned to the stable L' the guilty party to create the idea that he had left volun tarily. And another that ho may have gone off for some metive aim :tether inex plicable to his_ friends. We have been told that a dam near Frizziehurg has been dragged, under the supposition that Mr. Thomas was foully deal with and his body thrown into the water.—Compiler. „Vt"-Desirous of posting our readers with matters and things of special hAal interest, we transfer to our colums the following telegram .which, through the Associated Press Association, has appear ed In all the leading papers of the country. As dris is a com mon oceurenee, no suspieion was excited, and he was admitted to the bottling es tablishment, through which he had to pass in reaching the spring at that hour.— Seizing the opportunity, he thrust hir at tendaut front the building, and followim , ' him, turned the key in the door, and cool ly infortned hint that he was tot agent of New York Gettysburg :Spring Company, and that he had taken possession for his principals. He occupied the premises during the night, and in the morning quite a crowd assembled, among whom was a large sprinkling of invalids, who had come to , Gettysburg for water, in anticipation of the stoppage of supplies. • Some excite ment wit,- evidenced, but no disturbance, and peaceable possession was delivered to the resident agent and his employees. The proprietor has notified the company of his purpose to dispute the right of way t and front the rpring over his land by demolishing bridges and interposing ob structions. The resolution as amen ded was then voted down ayes 13, nays 17. The printing was resisted as involving an unnecessary expenditure of money, in asmuch as the Act under which the Com missioners were appointed expressly stip ulated that the State was not to be liable for the claieus, but simply provided for ascertainment of the amount with a view to securing payment by the General Gov ernment. We have always insisted that these claims should be paid by the State as a simple act of Justice to our people. To torn the claimants over to the General Government is simply a farce, as the lat ter has already a load of debt to carry inci dent to the War,. which will prevent it. from assuming to pay losses which occurred by reason of battle, the march of armies, and Rebel aggression. We regret to notice that the vote on Mr. Duncan's resolution was a strictly party vote, the Republicans voting adversely. The debate is not reported, and the rea sons which intluedeed Senators do not ap pear. But there is no question that the Republican party lu the State will be re luctant to pays these claimes, so long as the border counties continue to send un mitigated Copperheads to represent them in the Legislature, evince no aymhatby with the men who fought the Rebellion, and fail to recognize the great practical re sults of the War. If these claims are to be paid, the be-t way to secure the result, is is for the counties interested to send Rep resentatives to Harrisburg in thorough accord with the dominant party in the State. 11=2101 A GOOD IDEA.—To accommodate the new Passenger cars which the Hanover Branch Railroad Company intend to place on the road shortly, it has been found nec essary to raise the roof of the Passenger Dep.& in this place several feet. At the same time a desirable improvement has been effected by taking out the northern wall and substituting columns, with a wide platform running the entire length of the depot. Not only will there be more Built, but passengers will thus be enabled to pass from the Cars direct into the street, without the crowding and confusion inci dent to passing through the small recep tion rooms. The new Passenger Cars were built at York, and are said to bo after the best models. FURTHER IMPROVENIENTS.—We neglected to notice in our list of improve ments in another issue, that our friend, F.
