THE CENTRE REPORTER B. W, SMITH, Editor and Proprietor. CENTRE HALL, . . . PENN January 24, 1901, ’ A. TERMS. ~The terms of subscription to the Re- porter are one dollar per year in advance. ADVERTISEMENTS. ~20 cents per line for three fnsertions, wd 5 cen per line for each subse quent insei tion. Other rates made known on application, While less is being heard of the money question, there will always be differences of opinion on the subject. There are even two sides to a penny. ni ff Ml . Representative W. W. Nisbet, of Al- legheny county, will introduce in the Legislature a bill to exempt from state, county and city taxes all property be- longing to Posts of the Grand Army of the Republic. — ee An attempt was made to incorporate three anti saloon amendments into the army bill, but each amendment was rejected. Those who voted against the amendments claimed that the Presi- dent and the Taft commission had am- ple power in the premises and could better regulate the whiskey traffic. ite The state of Oregon has hit upon a new device to make and keep men so- ber. Every man who drinks takes out a license costing him $5 a year and unless he is armed with the document he cannot be served with liquor at any hotel or saloon. Every six months the names of all persons who take out a license are published in the paper so that the public may know those who are authorized to drink. The project to form a county to be called Quay county out of portions of Luzerne and Schuylkill, which was defeated by the last Legis- lature is to be revived. The new coun- ty bill is already shaped and will be in- troduced in the Legislature by Repre- sentative Haworth. There is not the slightest doubt that the bill will pass and Governor Stone will sign it. Ha- | zleton will be the capital of the new | county. It is understood that Senator Quay has agreed to foster the new county bill. eiea——— A SUBSIDY IS A SUBSIDY, Having failed to secure a right of way | through the Senate for the ship subsi dy bill, the subsidy Senators are put- ting their wits under a terrible strain to discover some way of sugar-coating the measure to make the job it provides for invisible. The interests vehind the measure want the bill passed, and they want it badly. There is a nine million a year pure gift in it to the little cote- rie of beneficiaries, and nine millions | a year will pay the modest expenses of several families, The Republican Senators met last] week to consider the subsidy question. | The best stagger they could make at it | was the substitution of another bill for the original one. The substitute will | be prepared by Senator Frye, and as he is the sponsor for the original nine | million gift, it is dollars to buttons that | the new bill will have the nine mili-| fon graot deftly concealed in it some- | where. That is the kernel of the whole | scheme, and if that is eliminated the subsidy jobbers will have no furtner interest in it. The Senators, Demo- cratic, Republican, Populist or other-| wise, who are opposed to taking mon- | ey out of the people's pockets to fill the coffers of a small and select band of ship-owners should be very shy of any new subsidy measure. They can defeat the one as easily as the other, and with quite as good cause. A sub-| sidy is a subsidy, no matter how deftly it is concealed in the syntax of a meas- ure framed purposely to deceive those who represent the people's interests, np “Florida Fast Mail” by the Sea. | board Air Line Railway, “Flori- | da and West India Short Line” | tothe Winter Resorts of the South. EpIrror REPORTER: —Would you kind- ly grant a little space in the columns of your valuable paper to reply to an article which appeared in the columus | of the Reporter of Dec. 14. The writer | says there were fifty-four deer killed within a radius of five miles of Kulp's camp. Now I do not want tosay that the writer wanted to misrepresent in any way, but he is mistaken as to the number of deer killed. There have not been that number killed in the Sevén mountains this last season from Coburn to Spruce Creek. As to the mountains being full of hunters, not | giving the deer a chance, let me say 1 was out about ten days with a hunting party, and io all that time we did not come in contact with any other party and we hunted within one mile of Kulp's camp. He says farther that | there are more deer killed now than, there were when the lasted three months. When the season run three months I have Known as many as eighty-two deer to have been killed in one season in the Seven not season mountains I see in another article in your paper of the same date that hunters were thick in the mountaias that deer to flee to the valley to there were a few deer 80 had escape. True chased out into the valley, but in every instance Now, these dogs belonged they were pursued by dogs! it is known who to, and it is also known that the owner of these dogs took them to the woods and hunted them.
