From 1830, the year in which the canal was first put in operation, until 1850, when the Pennsylvania railroad com- leted its line from Philadelphia to Pitts- wy the canal was the only means of transportation for passengers and freight across the country. By the aid of a por- tage road and section boats, the inven. tion of John Dougherty, the difficulties of passage over the Allegheny moun- tains from Holidaysburg to Johnstown were readily surmounted, and a com- plete line of traffic was established, From 1850 until now the canal was still maintained throughout a portion of its route for carrying coal, stone and lum ber. The Work of the Flood. From this town westward to Peters burg the canal was totally destroyed the overwhelming of last June, and the channel 18 now a ruinous mass of debris and rocks, in many places lev- elled up even with the banks on either gide. The Pennsylvania railroad is sur- veying certain sections of it with a view to transferring the railroad tracks from the present roadbed to the canal site, in order to avoid some of the sharp curves. The new route of the a] will be pushed forward at once.
