The writer of this uiiicle has taken no tice of t wo com m u n icat ions in 1 he Hastings Tribune which were written to that paper from a Cairolltown correspondent regaid ing a "phantom train of cars" that should have been seen by a party from Indiana at II o'i liH-k at nii; hi some time before t he tunnel was finished. They are but a laughing stock, for all the people who ait dciiuainted with this locality know tt. it t he so called "phantom train" could have been nothing more than the night ,-liift of t he lit tie dinkey locomot i ve vv hich ran day and night with from eight to twelve cars of st ll tT out of t he tunnel, ami when it rin i. no with its headlight, blowing otf steam and putting like a large locomot iv.-. would deceive anyone not acquainted w ith its be ing there. That is about the whole story of the "phantom." I live but out hundred and fifty yards from the tunnel. Mr. (leorge Yost lives on top of the tunnel and the Italian shanty is within one bundled yards of the same place. Mr. Yost had always from ten to twelve hoarders, some on day and some on nighi turn, and the same w it Ii the Italians, none of whom ever saw anything of the kind. If the writer from Carmlltown had at any time such important secret-, why not cummuuit-alc them to his neighbors or the .Yci'-x.' We often hear of snake stories and men who saw snakes where there were no snakes, ami that is about the size of the great "phantom" story. II looks more like a scar.--, row to pre vent the railroad company fiom placing a station near that point, or the people from patronizing it if it does. 1 did not w rite this art id.- for t he benefit of the community near here, but for the community at large. A XIOIK.W SrlMTTMAT TKl:. M lint Dnra It MnuT For ten davs past engineers have been busy surveying and running lines through Jackson tow n-hip w it h t In- evident inten tion .if locating a road leading to the ftlaeklick coal fields. For the past week they have been in the neighboi hoixl of Vino, and stakes have been driven along ninckstin"s Uun. near Harris' old saw -mill and near James M. Singer's place. Preliminary surveys have also heeu made furt her down Hinckston's Run. These surveyors are very leticent but it is thought they are in the employ of the 15. ii O. road, and the present movement looks tow ard the construction of a branch by that road from this place. The road would lead off at Pinckston avenue, in the Fourtenth w ard, and would follow Hinck ston's Run to the pike, thus taking it close to the ltlacklick fields. There are other coal lands along this route which it is thought would lx- plolit- able to develop. Among these are the HensholT tracts above Ilo-e.lal.- and n'l.i-rs all along the creek. While nothing defi nite can lx- learned as to the intention of this com pany. it is known t hat it wants to get into the Placklick field- and take some of the trade from the Pennsylvania. The lirst project, lo cross I he P.-nns v I va u vania about the viaduct and go up Sail Lick, it is thought would be more expen sive and less sat isfactbry than to go up Hinckston's Hun. especially, as it is ex pected that a satisfactory agreeinei.t can lie reached with the Cambria Iron I 'om pany to allow a right of way thiough their yards.
