We further find from the testimony and what we saw on the groupd, there was not sufficient waste weir, r.or was the dam constructed sufficiently strong. The watr In the streams at Wilmore was higher on May 31st than it bad ever been before within the recollection of the oldest Inhabitants, and considerable damage was the result bridges and fences being swept away In many places along the streams and growing crops weie covered with sand and debris. The weather bas assumed something of its normal state, and hay making is already ln order. J- Announcement. The Loretto Normal will reopen July 22, 189. for a term of five weeks. The Literary Society will meet on tbe 12th Inst., and on every Friday evening as usual, E. Walker Smith. Ian Slbrrl rarrlrd tbe News. Mr. J. P. Wilson, Superintendent of the Argyle Coal Compan'y works at Soutn Fork, tells the following very interesting story in connection with tlie breaking of the South Fork dam : About noon on the day of the flmi. the incessant rain aod the unprecedented rise in the Conemaugb and South Foik rivers caused me to fear that the dam would be in danger, and about noon I sent Dau Sibert on horseback to learn tbe condition of the dam. He returned about at 12:30 o'clock and reported that a little water was run ning over the dam. Later iu tbe afternoon 1 observed that tbe waters In tbe streams were not subsiding, and. fearing more than ever that the dam would burst, I aaiu sent Sibert to tbe dam. lie was coue but a short time wbec he returned, riding at full spt-cd. a:.d reported that the water had hi, ken through the dara about twelve feet from the top aud was running out lo a stream about tfi- size of barrel. I kDew then it was but a question of time until the dam would give way, and making all possible baste, I went to the Penrsj Ivat.ia signal-tower across the bridge and sent a message, baying : "The dam Is breaking. Look out !" The lady operator laughid at me when 1 gave her the message, and an engineer Id tbe tower at the time sal 1 there was no danger. I in duced ber to send it, however, and then walked out of the tower, across the rail road, and up the steps to tbe tramroad. I tiad just reached that point when I beard the fiottd coming. 1 calietl to the people in the tower, and at last, when they saw it, they bartered from '.be build-, log. The operator ran np the 6teps, and the engineer ran to bis engine near tbe tipple. He cut his engine loose, and, pulling the throttle wide open, rushed up the track. Just as he was crossing the bridge the flood struck tbe tender of tne engine. The bridge was carried away, but the engineer escaped. When Sibert came from the dam the sec ond time, the people living in the lower portions cf South Fork hastily heeded his warning and escaped. Altogether thirty eight houses, occupied by forty-two frnj! lles, were destroyed. The fact that only two pereors were drowned shows that Sibert's warning was well heeded. At the time my message was going over the wires, a relative of mine, employed on the railroad, was in the Mioeral Point signal tower. Realizing what the warning meant, he hastened to the village and gave the warning. All the resident" of that place except fourteen escaped. Three years ago, when Superintendent Pltcairs,. of the Penn sylvania Koad, went with me to inspect the dam, he told me that if the was any danger of a break 1 was to notify him at once. I did so. and am glad to know that try warning saved some lives at least. Another Storm. GREEXsniRG, July 10. One of the most destructive stomas that ever occurred in this section passed over the northern end of the county this evening about 4 o'clock. Rain fell in torrents, and the creeks for miles around the mining village ot Crap Tree ovei flowed, and crops er wheat, hay and oits were carried down the streams. Tne waters or Crab Tree and Thorn creeks were the most damaging. Trees were up rooted in their course and buildings situ ated on their banks have been swept away. Every bridge on both creeks from Crab Tree to Saltsburg fcas been carried away, and 200 or 300 yards of tbe Crab Tree branch railroad has been completely wash ed out. No lives have as yet been reported lost. A hailstorm followed, and was most disastrous to the corn crop, which is thought to be entirely destroyed. Tbe embraced an area of about 30 miles, and in many places the wheat, wblch bad been cut by the farmers in tbe morning, was earned down the etream in shocks. At Salem and at tbe Five Points, and all along tbe Loyal baona creek, tbe damage is great. The loss will run up into thousands of dollars. It is believed tbe flood was caused by a cloud burst. Inasmuch as it was confined to that narrow limit, tbe rain here being very light. The Crab Tree Railroad is a brajcb ot Pennsylvania road, and it is thought tbe full extent of the damage to it has not yet been told, a? it runs for a dis tance on the flat t clow where the washout was observed. The water is now falling rapidly. Kate Kail. On Thursday of last week the Soutb Fork base ball club played a game with tbe Ebensborg club and laid them out by a score of 22 to 15.
