While the S:ate of IVrmsj-Ivania has been trying to get rid of the hawks the general Government has bi'en busy devis ing ways to make them more useful. Negotiations Lave been pending for sometime between the chief ornithoio gis' of the I )eptir: merit of Agriculture a:id a mar who tins had a great deal of experience as a 'rainer of falcons in Europe. These negotiations are for the purpose, of securing the services of this man to train a number of hawks for use in the rice fields of South Carolina. The planters there are clamoring for for Rome method f ridding their fields of rice birds, which play frightful havoc with their crops every year. It has been found that the presence of a living hawk tn tlvt air over a field of rice will cause the immediate departure of every bird in the vicinity. Guns, drums and other imp'ements for creating a great noise are only partly successful. A f uffed hawk will do well euougli for . day or two, but th depredators soon learn that there is little to fear from a dead enemy. It is therefore proposed to try the effect of trained birds. It is the purpose of the department to begin w'.th a small number this year, and if the plan proves successful to the rice bird problem, it is likely that every rice planter in the S juth will be supplied in the near future with a flock of falcons. grnixo Farm Clkaxiko. While the wife cleans the bouse, let the hus band clean the farm. If vegetable mat ter is left about the yard, its rapid de cay during the damp, warm weathei of Spring and Summer, will poison the air and aff-ct the health of the family. If ltft about the barn, lots and fields, it will have a like influence on the farm anima's. Il .gs are doubly liable to be injured, for they not only breathe the fouled air, buf nest in such litter. Farm cleaning will save loss from disease. The litter h'is great vulue as a fertiliz'T when properlv applied. The intelligent use of this manure ensures better crops, and the farm is capable of a more thor ough cultivation. And then how much appeirar.ces are f.nproved. Make a bon fire of pieces of wood, brush, stumps, etc., not fit for fuel, and give the char coal to ths swine and the ashes to fhe fruit trees. Remember this work is not complete until the stumps and stones are removed which can be taken out with a reasonable amount of labor : until the trees about the house and in the or chard are pruned ; until the old growth is taken from raspberries, gooseberries, currants, etc. ; until the " uuder-brush" Is cleared out of the wooddot ; until all the ditches are opened and pools are drained ; In short, until thbfarm is clean and neat. The Germans use at the present day among their furniture makers, carpen ters and joiners, thirteen different va rieties of saws, each one of which has its own peculiar size of the teeth, as well as a different relation of the teeth to each other. How important the thin 8-w blade Is, not only as a means to save power, but aiao as a means to Bave word, can le seen from the following : A log of walnut, four meters long and one meter diameter, cut into tweDty pieces by the new horizontal sawframe, saves . thirty millimeters of wood when com pared with the cutting of the old-fash ioned vertical saw. This is eaual to a ! Profit of ?i to $12. For Germanv, where ! annually 100,CH0 cubic meters of this ' wood is used in various induotries, this J would represent a saving of ?lm to ! On a virit to the Cat skill Mountains the past season, I stopped at a f arm house, the owner, like many others in that vicinity, owns a saw-mill, and p.ys considerable attention to fruit. On ore occasion, be found that a lot of sawdust hud some time in the winter been accidentally thrown around the roots of one of his peach trees, to the depth of a foot. As spring came, he wasastoriished to find that, while all the rest, of his peach orchard was start Ing in to bloom, the tree around which the saw dust had been thrown showed no sign of s'arting. Fearing something was the matter, he began to dig around the roots, and, although it was the first week in May, he found the soil was frozen solid. The covering of sawdust had been put on when the ground was frozen, and, be ing an excellent non-conductor, had kept it from thawing, thus retarding the growth ten or twelve days, so that by the time the peach tree, thus belated, commenced blooming, all danger of late spring frosts, so fatal to the peach crop, had passed. This was some fifteen years ago, but the owner, acting on the suggestion thus fortunately given has ever since covered his peach trees for six or eight feet around the roots with about a foot of sawdust, being careful, however, to do the covering in February or March, when the ground was deeply frozen. lie claims that, by this method, hp never failed to secure a crop of peaches, by thus delaying the develop ment of the buds until the danger of spring froet was past. This plan is well worth adopting in all sections where peaches and other fruits are injured by late frosts, though sawdust is perhaps the best ma terial to cover with, yet if not obtaina ble , leaves, or litter, or any nonconduc ting material may be used to keep the soil from thawing, thus retarding vegi tatton. One very Important point must not be lost sight of, which is, that the covering must only be doEe when the fiost Is deep in the soil, or late iu the winter when the ground is likely to be frozen deep. If covered when the ground is slightly frozen early in the winter, the object wonld be defeated, a3 the late covering wilch is pnt on to keep the frost in the ground, if put on early in the winter, would prevent the frost from entering deep enough to re tard the growth. There are ma Ly pecs pie who consume a small portion of f. bfe-timein unnecessary coughing. A' a little irritation felt, a couch i. set nr an.i habit keeps it going until the irri tation provoked pioduces a real and serious disease. Thro' force of sympa thy cougbing often becomes contagious. This can be well illustrated in a school room on rcstleH boys and cirls, on a cold w n'er's da.. Le? oDe child set the ball rolling, when the teacher sddres'f. the school another child takes up the musical note, then another, and stil another until th? teacher's voice is pe w erless as if he were in a din of ar'.iller The teacher brings the ruler to tl.e des. aod cimmands this noise to stop.
