AJ! modern high explosives are now almost universally exploded by the agency of electricity. Denmark is known as a remarlably level couDtry. Surveys of last season find only two points in the kiDgdom that reach an elevation of 540 feet. A peculiar black paper, made from the bark oi certain trees, serves the Siamese and Burmese Ir. lieu of slates. Betel leaves are used to erase tho writing. To make papier mache for fine, smaU work, boil clippings of brown or white paper in water, beat them into a paste, add glue or gum, and size and preas into oiled molds. Gravitation on the sun is about 27 times as great as on the earth. If the force of gravity here vre increased to that of the sun ws should be ynable to move ; a 150 pound man would then weigh about two tons. Workable and valuable deposits of pe troleum have been discovered along the Euyptian coast of the Red Sea. It appears to have lost its more volatile constituents, and is found at the level of the sea beneath the recent coral for mation along the shore. Cold-air machinery Las been success fully used in the construction of a tunnel at Stockholm r freezing the i gravel before the excavation and keep'.ng j it in that condition unti tbe lining was : in position. In this way several large buildings have been undermined. The lenth-rate of IDglanfl is decreas ing, atid l.Vj jK"ople are added yearly to each 10,W0. At the present rate ot increase, according to Dr. M. Tidy, the eountrv's poi'uiatKm 20 generations hence will be 27,L1j0,O;0,(.-.i0, or enough to till 20 earths with the present denity of population. A machine has been invented which sews on buttons. It is claimed that it will perform the work of Tour oi five girls, and will do it bettei, because It never slights its work, but puts in just the number of stitches It is guaged for. It will ew on buttous with two or four holes equally well, and at th rate of six per minute with twelve stiches in each. Gold-leaf is cut by placing it on a flat clean leather pad, pressing it very gent ly, and sawing with a perfectly straight edged clean knife on split cane. The best Dutch metal may replace the gold leaf if perfectly smooth. The Dutch metal may be cut between paper by close shearing scissors with such long; blades that each cnt is made with one motion. From observations in various widely separated cities, aGeiman meteorologist Suds that the yearly mean temperature in a town is from one to two degrees higher than in the surrounding couLtry, the difference seeming to depend less on the Eize of tbe town than on the sur roundings of the observing station. Both the daiiy and the absolute fluctua tions are smaller in towns thau iu the ojnen country. A recent writer states that the senses are not parallel in men and women. The latter possess to greater perfection of the sense of touch. The senses of hearing and sieht are relatively the same in both sexes, but it is considered that men have the sense of taste more delicately developed than woman. The sense of smell was, in the experimeuts. made doubly as acute ;n men as in wo men. No reason is assigned for the distinction. It is difficult, says a Belgian journal, to distinguish between iron and steel, tools. They have the same polish and workmanship ; use will commonly show the difference. To make thedistinction quickly, place the tool upon a stone, and drop upon it some diluted nitric acid (foul parts of water to one of acid). If the tool remains clean, it is of iron ; if of steel, it will show a black spot where touched with the acid. These spots can be easily rubbed off. Trofessor Henry E. Alverd, after sev eral hundred observations, utters the following conclusions on the formation j of dew, viz, that on clear nights the j temperature of the air four inches above j the ground is lower than four feet above by about ten or fifteen degrees and the soi! three inches below the surface is always higher than at the surface iuelf. The soil exhales moisture duriDg the night, and most of the moisture seen oa plants in the morning is transpired by the plants tbenipelves. Soil moisture supplies a large portion of the dew. A remaikable 3nd of meteoric iron, has been recently described by Dr. Gurlt, of Bonn. This mass, which welgs about 1J pounds was found in a piece of coal aoout to be used in a furnace. Close examination proves :t to be of meteoric origin, and was plunged into ! 1. . t AAn1 .1 i I n fnrmarmn i ii ir uiasa ui Li.ai uuiiug .13 j . ..v.. in the tertiary geological epoch. It I essentially pure iron, with some con tained carbon and nickel. There are other similar meteorites, as the famous masses of St. Catherine in Braril and Braumau in Bohemia, but this is very much older and belongs to the tertiarf ! epoch. J Yet another application has beea found for metal, which is bow being ' substituted 3c card-board ia book-binding. This novelty Is known as tha j "British Pellisfort" binding, and it ! consists in the use of thin sheet metal for covers. The metal is specially pie ! pared, and the cover may be bent and j atraightened again without perceptible i damage. It may, in fact, be safely subjected to such treatment as would ( destroy ordinary covers. The metal j Is, of course, covered with the leather I usually employed in book-binding, and ; the finished book presents no differeace ! in appearance except in the greater ! thinness of the cover. If it were possible to rise above the atmosphere which surrounds the earth i we should see nothing but an intense and sbarpIy-deGned ball or Cre, while : every thicg else would be wrapped ia ! total darkness. Theie could be no difTu ; sion of light without an atmosphere or ! some similar medium for it to act upon, j but if the air around us extended to a height of TOO miles the rays of the sua could not penetrate it, and we would be left in darkness. At the depth of TOO ! feet in the ocean the light ceases alto gether, one-half of the light being absorbed in passing throcgh seven feet of the purest water. Wajr ww jjt a X in)
