IS 3iAl)E. Thi lifocess of manufacture is very interest intr. Th! lojrs are delivered in the mill van! in any suitable leiifftlis as fur ordinary lumber. A steam drag saw cuts them into such lengths as may ht rc.piire.1 by the order in hand ; those be iuir cnt at the time of our visit were four feet l.i;. After cutting, the logs are phe'd in a lanje steam box. l-" feet wide, 22 feet loncf, and six feet hiurh, built separate from the main buikr-insr. This box is divided into two compart ments. When one is filled entirely f nil, the doors are closed, and the steam, sup plied by the engine in the main build ing, is turned on. The logs remain in this lox from three to four hours, -when they are ready for use. This steaming not only removes the bark, but moi tens and softens the entire lo-jf. From the steam 1hx the lo goes to the veneer lathe. It is here raised, grasped at each end by the lathe centers, 'and firmly held in position, beginning to slowly revolve. Kvery turn brings it in contact with the knife, which is rruacred to a required thickness. As the Lc revolves the in equalities of its surface of course first coint- in contact ivith the keen-edged knife, and disappear in the shape of waste veneer, which is pass"d to the engine room to be used as fuel. Soon, however, the uneveness of the log dis appears, and the now perfect veneer comes from beneath the knife in a con tinuous sheet, and i s received and pass ed on to the cutting table. This con tinues until the log is reduced to about a seven inch core, which is useless tor the purpose. The veneer as it conies rolling off the log presents all the diver sity of colors and the beautiful grain and rich marking that have perhaps for centuries been growing to perfection in the silent depths of our great forests. From the lathe the veneer is passed to the cutting table, where it is cut to lengths and widths as desired. It is then conveyed to the second story, where it is placed in large dry rooms, air tight, except as the air reaches them through the proper channels. The ve neer is here placed in crates, each piece separate and standing on edge. The hot a:r is then turned on. This comes from the sheet iron furnace attached to the boiler in the engine room below, and is conveyed through large pipes regulated by dampers for putting on or taking off the heat. There is also a blower attached which keeps the hot air in the dry rooms in constant motion, the air as it cools passes off through an es cape pipe in the loor, while the freshly heated air takes its place from below. The rooms are also provided with a net work of hot air pipes near the t'oor. j The temperature is kept at about lij.V, ; and so rapKl is the drying process that j in the short space of four hours the ijrcen log from the steam box i.-. shaved, cut, dried, packed, and ready for .ship- mnt. j After leaving the dry rooms it is as- sorted, counted, and put up in packages of one hundred each, and tied with; cords like lath, when it is ready for I shipment. Bird's-eye maple veneer is j much more valuable and lL'cmiivs inur;- I care than almost any other, and this is i picked in cases instead of tied in bun- j dies. The (living p-ocess is. usually a slow one. and conducted in open sheds i simply exposed to the air. John Wise was lost in his bal loon, "The rathfinder," about a year ajro, 1 the newspapers printed many accounts of trips made Into the air. some ly brave men and some by foolish ones. A larly who lives in the town of Centralis in the State of Illinois, aid nothine until all the rest were through talkinc. Then she tol.l tVie enitor of the St. Louis JirpnhHmn, to look into the number of his paper that was printed on the twenty-first dsy of Septem ber, ma. The editor looked and round an account of how two little children took a trip in a balloon all by themselves. On that day an aeronaut, or sailor of the air, named Brooks, filled his air-sh with pas on the farm of Mr. Harvey, who lived near Centra lia. He expected to sail in the afternoon. About noontime Mr. Harvey put bis two children into the balloon, just to please them, and not thinking for a moment of any danger. The balloon was tied to a tree by ropes. All at once a gust of wind broke the ropes, and the balloon shot ud into the sky with nobody but the two children in the basket. Mr Tlar vey was wild with grief, and shouted aloud : "They're lost ! they're lot !" All the neigh bors ran to the spot, only to see the balloon driftinoroff to the north, and more than a mile hijrh. One of the children was a girl, Xettie, ciaht years old, and the other was her little broth er, Willie, four years old. Hoth cried when they found themselves leavin? the Ground, an.l coins on a very, very staDse journey indeed. Nettie looked over the ede of the basket and saw her father wringing hrs hands away below. Soon the people looked to her smaller than babies, aiui the houses like toy houses. She and Willie were coin? up, up up, all the time. "I expect we are goins to heaven, Willie," sTid Nettie. Wil lie thought it would be very cold in heaven, then, for the higher it went the colder It grew. Nettie wrapped Willie in her apron, and held his head in her lap until he cried j himself asleep. Then Nettie folded her ! hands and waited. She said : "I think wh i must be near the gate now." She meant the ! gate of heaven, that she had heard about in Sunday school. Uut Nettie fell asleep too. When she awoke, she found that some strange man was lifting her from the basket. Tl'.o strange man was a farmer in Northern j ; Illinois, who had seen the balloon drifting j ! low across his field. The rope was drag- j REMEDY FOR THE TOTATO TEST. Tf more of out progressive farmers had lieen present at the meeting of the Agricultural Society ou last Monday they would have learned a fact that would not only have compensated thern for the half day spent in attending us sessions, but Would have put dollars into their pockets besides. Nettie and Willie's father soon learned that they had been found, and took them home two days afterward. Nettie is now a woman, the very same who told the H-jntblintn to look back in its files for the story. pounds of tobaco scraps or retuse, put them into an oia oarrei ann mien n, nearly half full of water, allowing these to remain several davs, until a strong decoction was produced. The latter was then appled to the beetles on the vines, and it effectually destroyed all the young; ones. A second application proved more than the mat me beetles could stand, and the day after the reme dv had been applied only two were found where thousands had been found before. Here we have a romedy at once cheap and effectual. It is well-known that many farmers are opposed to the use of I'aris green. Wcanseof its deadly poison ing properties, although it has been fully established that being, insoluable in water, the growing tubers are unable to absorb it. Almost every jwitato grower is also a tobacco farmer, and need therefore lie at no expense to buy the scraps he needs to prepare this remedy, fillers aie worth only a few cents icr pound, and will answer as well as any other kind. The preparing could be made more effectual if the to bacco and water were put in some large vessel and boiled. This would greatl' increase the strength of the decoction, and give the beetles their quiet us even more expeditiously. The most scrupu lous iotato grower cannot object to the use of this remedy, as it is perfectly safe. Perhaps, if a few ounces of carbolic acid were added to the decoction after it is cold its destructive property would be improved. This is just t he time to try it. and we hope our farmers will not le slow in making the necessary applica tion. If it proves as successful gener ally as it did in Mr. Cooper's hands, it may be considered as of inest imable val ue to the farming community. Lan caster ('(.) cr fCr't.
