The very best news we are. in possession of is contained in the announcement that the small-pox scourge is nearly stamped out in Johnstown. No deaths have occurred there recently, and the sanitary provisions adopted make it entirely unlikely that another visita tion of tlie epidemic will soon occur. "What is this small-pox, anyhow?" asked one of our citizens the other day of a medical man. "It is nothing," was the answer, "except the neglect of the requirements of common hu man decency." All of wbicb is respectfully submitted. Tson Moist, a freight brakeman on the middle division, was killed near Elizabeth Furnace, a short distance east of Altoona, on Thursday night. It is supposed he -was knocked from the deck of a refrigerator car by a Dridge. nis head was completely sev ered from the body, his legs were cut off, and the trunk was cut in twain across tho abdomen. He was 2 years of age, and leaves a wife and two children, who reside at Mount Pleasant, near Mifflin. The corps of engineers engaged by some body to locate a line for a suppositious rail road through these parts have rented a room in tho second story of the Freidhoff block, ; High street, where they will until further 1 orders make their headquarters. During the present week several experimental lines j have been run by them south of town, with i the evident purpose of forming a connection with a corps who are working this way from the direction of Indiana county. The Johnstown Tribune says that A. J. Phcy, Ksq., of this place, was, it is stated, ; offered $1,000 a year if he would travel with Robinson's show in the capacity of book- ! keeper. But the attendant provisions, it adds, were too binding. What the a. p. were ' we can only conjecture, but if we ain't "off our eggs" to an a'arming'extent they would : be fully as binding if the writer of the item : instead of Mr. I. hey had ;been offered the ; "posish," which neither o them were, on j the same conditions. I Prothonotary Gates has been absent from town for several days, called hence by his business interests in White and adjoin- j ing townships. Either this or next week he ! will visit Johnstown for the purpose of reg istering the names of those who by law are ! permitted to practic; the profession of medi cine in this Commonwealth. Meanwhile, for other sections of the county, the book is open at the Prothonotary's office here for signatures. It is a good law as much so as the registration of small-pox patients and by its provisions quacks will be stamped out. A stalwar t Republican in this place avows his willingness to wager one thousand dollars that ex-Senator Conkling will be the next President of the United States, and that he wouldn't resign the office after he gets it for the sake of anybody's or any party's endorsement. Here is a chance for some betting man to indulge in a little game of "put up or shut up." The man and the monev can at present be found not more than a thousand miles fioin the Ebensburg railroad depot, but we neither deny nor aver that the finding can be done with the money in his fist. There were thirty physicians, not count ing "Cooney," who is not a phj sician, though he runs a soda fountain, in attendance at the annual meeting of the Juniata Valley Medical Association, which convened at Cresson, this county, on Thursday last. Addresses were delivered by the President, Dr. A. Pothrock, Hon. A. K. McCIure (who was piesent by invi tation), and several others. Boss ; Corresponding and Recording Secrctaiy, John Fay ; Treas urer, A. Rothrock. The next annual eon clave w ill be held at the same place on Tues day, July isth, lss-2. The recent shooting of President Gar field has brought to the front quite a number vf men who have been wounded in the liver, but we agree with our friend ('apt. It. II. MeCormick, of Cherrytree. in believing that the case of Mr. Michael Bauni, of Susque hanna township, this county, stands without 1 a rival. Some years ago Mr. Baum and an : other man were engaged in felling timber, ! both of them at the time being at work close together, when the hitter's axe glanced and struck Baum in the side, one of the sharp I edges of which penetrated his liver ami cut ' it in two pieces, one or both of which, our friend's letter not being very clear on this point, were subsequently taken out hy Dr. ! Bialiier, then of Cherrytree, but now of ) Chambersburg. Such an injury would seem ' to be sure death to the unfoitunate victim, but, strange to say, Mr. Baum is as well and 1 hearty to-day, as he himself can bear wit; ness, as any man in the country. Who's ; next? The Johnstown Tribune has received a , letter of inquiiy as to whether the disease ; known as iay fever" might be mitigated in . its effects on the system by the patient's tak ing up bis residence for a month or so in the mountains of that vicinity at the time the di.ease is likely to afllict him, and the answer is as follows : "We have consulted with sev ! eral physicians in relation to the matter, and ' they are of the opinion that change of air and climate would hardly prove beneficial, j as several gentlemen in this place suffer the Infliction every fall, ami it seems to be a con ! stitutional ailment with them, as it lias . doubtless become with the inquirer." Sev ! eral persons from a distance, the victims of ' this distressing malady, w ho have come here from year to year during the heated season, ' give it as their experience that they have thus invariably escaped its periodical visita tion. One thing is sure, namely, that no constant resident of this section ever had hay fever ; while the fact should not be lost sight of that Ebensburg is about one thou sand feet higher, counting from tide-water, i than Johnstown. I We were very agreeably surprised 011 ! It appears that he, in company with two oth er voung men, had been to Johnstown, and were returning to i.uiy s on a ireigm. um., and W-hen the train Stopped for the engines to take water at Portage, lie was thrown to me track by a sudden jerk of the train, and some four or five cars passed over him, cutting off both of his legs and his right arm. Rev. Fath er McTliich. of Wilmore. was hastily suni- ! moned and arrived a few minutes before his death. In the evening his remains were brought here and to-day they were interred in the Catholic cenieterv fit Summitville. He was about 20 years of age and unmarriea. Mav his soul rest in pence. I The good work in the coa! mines near here j induced the drivers at several of them to de- mand an increase of wages. The demand, j however, was refused, anil the drivers per- -emptorily discharged. Work was suspended ; fora few davs as a consequence, but now all j are in full blast again. I A man named Wm. When found he j was unconscious, and had it not been for the ! tinielv aid of Dr. Patterson he would no I doubt have Med to death. A brief reference to the matter was made in our issue last evenins;, but as it was after 4 o'clock w hen he was hurt, we did not have time to ascertain full particulars. Upon su'.)sec'.;ent inquiry we learned that he had been in Johnstown yesterday, for the pur pose of visiting one of his sons, who is em ployed in a blacksmith shop here, ami also to do some marketum. lie drove here in a wacon drawn bv two horses, and started on the return trip shortly after dinner, reaching the Mineral l'oint crossing just as the way passenger train west was due at that place. Some time in April last, as our readers will remem ber, Peter J. M. VVentz restor ed the animal to Mr. Smith when he made his title clear to it, and Pickle was transfer red to tlie Ulair county jail. On Tuesday last his case camo up in court for trial, ami. as nearly every horsethief dops, Pickle at tempted to prove an alibi bv showing that he was at the house of his father-in-law on the night the mare was stolen.
