THE FAFEE MAKKKS OF ANTIQUITY" niSTOKT F THE UTILIZATION OF VEOKTAULE MATTLR. .1. . .. . . . 1 lie urst invention of paper rnanu- laclurcd from vegetable pulp is lost in llie midst of aotiquity. It appeara lo have been (hat intriHiuf4.il into J'hirope, Lorn the IJst through the Arabian) 1 anil Persian s. The use of paper, ac- I cording to the modern application of the word, had become common in China ax an extremely remote period, (jiibbon tt-lls us in a note, that tLis in a iiu fact ii re was introduced from L'h -na into Samaracand Col 13. G , and thence sprerul over Europe. The Chi nese are said to have so great a variety of paper that each province possesses its own iieculiar make. The sort commonly known as silk paper is fab- . ricated from the inner bark of the bamboo, oi mulberry tree. The rice paper, so called, ia prepared from the inner portion of the stems of a hardy leguminous plant that grows plentifully about the lakes near Cal cutta, ar.d also in the Island of For mosa, whence the Chinese import it in large quantities. The stems of the into a thin slice, then flattened, pressed ami dried. The Arabians appear first j to have introduced the manufacture of j paper into Spain. On the oldest sueci- i men extant of this Spanish manufacture I a treaty ot peace between the King of . J Aragon and a neighboring potentate, A. 1. 1 1 7 G, is transcribed. A rnanu ttcript exists in England, however, written upon cotton paper, Waring date A. I. 101'J; but this paper was, no doubt, imported from the KasV Taper at this early period was of ex ceedingly inferior quality, being coar-e brown, spongy arid liable to speedy decay. So much was this the case that in A. I). 1211 the Emi;ror Frederic the Second of (Jenuany issued an order declaring null all documtnts written on this material, and fixing a term of years within which they were lo be ! transferred to parchment. Paper had J hitherto been manufactured of raw I cotton, hemp, or other vegetable fibie; j but it now came to light that rnrs : having already undergone tho process, not only of manufacture but of wear, was better adapted to the purpose, being mo:e easily reducible to a fine pulp. We have, therefore, specimens of paper made horn rags as early as the fourteenth century, the oldest extant being a letter from Joinvilie to Louis the Tenth of France, dated A. D. 1315. The continued imperfection of this manufacture still necessitated tho tran fcription of all important document on parchment or vellum. The parch ment was, as of old, cut into band', joined endwise, so as to form lolls, some of the judicial acts requiring rolls twenty ltct i:i k'iit!i. Mor was this plan discontinued till the lbth century, when the co.lex, written on both si-.h-s, 'teeame gentrul. It must not be con cluded that ancient law parchments were always lengthy affairs, however, there being contracts of salts dating A. J. 123:2 and 1252 only two inches long by five wide, and a will wiitten in A. I. 1255 two inches by thre and a half. The principle of paper making has been the same from time immemo rial, the only change being the material used ami the machinery employed. The fibrous substance is cut and bruised in water until it becomes a fine soft pulp. This is taken up in a thin layer upon a frame of fine wire cloth that sllows the moisture to pnss through, when the pulp speedily coag ulate into a shu t of paper. The sheets are first pressed between felt, which being removed, the pa-MT is again sub jected to a powerful pressure and dried, jt is in this state binulous, like b!o' ting paper; but the sheets are noir dipped in size, and agaiu pressed and tlllef'. For printing paper, however, the feize is added to the pulp in the engine. Some idea may be formed of the im provement effected by machinery in this manufacture when it is stated that whereas lv t!ie haiul process thepaner took more tha. three months to com- I plete, the ras9 may now be mit into 1 me mm one day, and tne paper is ready for delivery the next. Scarctly a fibrous cgetable substance exists that may not be tumid to use in this man uf: cture. Jacob Christopher Sehatfer, of llatisbon, in 1705. wrote a work 011 exjK riii.ei ts in ni:king paper from other materials than rags, which is printed on sixty varieties of paper, made from as many different sub stances. A id in 173t. the Marquis de Yilette published in London a small book printed on paper male from marsh mallow ; at the ends are leaves of paper manufactured at IJruges from twenty ditrerent plants, such as nettles, nops, reeets, etc. Jiut these, rs well is alnir r un on v l.. -r.u;.l,..u,l oQ o..K ...... 4. - , - ve a -ksb a j 'V V,"'H-.V T IHJ Btitutes to supply the deficiency of rags, not as 111 any way superseding that material A Ccriois I'ocretbook. I I.UTH KR , d Corry Oity.r PROFITS OF SlIEFP RAISING. The following from a Pennsylvania farmer shows that sheep raising is profitable: "1 learn by the agricultural report of , 1870 that there were nearly seven acre9 ' of unimproved land in Pennsylvania to each sheep, ami that each produced a I little more than three anl a half pounds of wool. This, at 40 cents per pound, amounts to $2,500,000. My objec: in giving these figures, is to show the profit of this, branch of agriculture. I am now keeping on an average farm ' one sheep to every two acres improved j land. The wool of each sheep averages four pounds, but these sheep do not i consume one half the hay and grain j raised, and do not receive any rools. I Last year I raised my first crop of ; sugar-beets and find that 30 or 40 ton9 ; may be raised per acre I think these j will enable me to keep at least one sheep lo every improved acre, and still have one half the hay, grain, and roots left to feed the team and necessary cattle. If these conclusions be correct, and one-half of my sheep raise twin lambs, making a total of one and one half lambs to each sheep, worth ?4 each, we have a total of $6 for Iambs and SI. 60 for wool per acre, or18, 500,000 for lambs and $G9,000,000 for wool in Pennsylvania. I cannot give the value of Iambs for 1ST0, and cannot compare the difference. The wool produce was G, 500, 000 pounds, but at my estimate there would be 40,000,000 pounds, making a difference of $10, -000.000 at 40 cents per pound. This result is, of course, not attainable in one or to years; it must be brought J about by degrees. I find 6hee) are ! liable to disease if kept in large Hocks, ' unless the very best breeding ewes arc selected and the rams changed each B I'CKwfiEAT. The name conies from beechw heat, because the seed re- i sembles the beech mast in shape, but has been corrupted into buckwheat. It is a native of Asia, and was brought into Europe either by the Crusaders six or sekeu huudre.l vears ago, or ; into .Spain by Moors. It did not reach ! England until the last l!50 vears, but just in time lo come over wuii some of the earliest settlers in America. It was first cultivated by the Hudson river Dutch, and by the Swedes on the i'fin:ue. i lie jmiicii mention it as early as ir,2o, and from what they sav j on the subject it is quite certain that ! they knew quile as much about buck- j w heat cakes as was ever worth know- ' intr. From these two centres of early ! settlement the cultivation spread over; New York, New Jersey and Penns 1- vania. fi.llowiii'r t.bi i-idonists intn t'l.n I new homes they cleared up in the for ests as certainly as the honey bee fol iows in the pathway of the western pioneer, making his home wherever the white man builds his cabin. These thiee state? have always been irr.meie lu oduceis of buckwheat, "roin two- thirds of the whole quantify raised, now amounting to millions of bushels annually. Its cultivation is lapiolv extending through the North and Northwest, until th.e present annual pioduct is over 30,OGO00 of bushels. Selling Hogs For the benefit of ; young tanners like in v self, soys a j j writer in the I'raclical Farmer, 1 will ; i give my experience iu selling hogs i whether on foot or dressed would pay j best, when one has a chance of doing j either. I know it is owing to the j price, age and size of pigs, to a great j extent. The price here last season ! j was -H cents on foot, 6 cents dressed. 1 he question with tne was whether it . ! , ... , would iav oest to sell 1iese1 or on foot 1 tested the sul iect as far as mv opportnnitiea would pel lllit, not ha vint; anything to weigh with but a beam. I weighed the iiicrs, eacli one, after j killing and bleeding, then dressed mid : cleaned, and alter hanging an hour i weighed again, with the lollowing re- suit : First pig before dressing, 224 lbs; after dressing 175 lbs; second pig i 190 lbs. before cleaning, after cleaning : 154; third pig, 23S befoic cleaning, i otter, 200. It will be seen that the ' first pig lost 40 lbs., the second 30 lbs., me lima 6 ids ; in alt, 12."J lbo. Weight of all the pigs, before dressing, 652 lbs.; at 4 cents per cwt. would be $29.34; after dressing, 529 lbs. at C cts. per cwt. would be $31.74 a profit of $2 40, which would hardly pay if you had to spend one day" to butcher and one hauling to market If sold on foot it takes but one day to deliver or olle SVorT8"11 " U $2A0' Fever and Ague.
