The use of paper, ac- irordlng to the modern application of :::::::::::r:::: the word, hud become common in China at an extremely remote period. The sort cotnmouty known as silk paper is fab ricated from the inner bark of the bamboo, oi mulberry tree. : The rice paper, so called, is prepared from the inner portion of the stems of a hardy leguminous plant that grows plentifully about the lakes near Cal cutta, ar.d alao in the Island of For mosa, whence the Chinese import it in large quantities. The stems of the plant being cut into the proper lengths for the sheet, the pith is cut spirally iutrt a thin slice, then flattened, pressed .nd dried. The Arabians appear first to have introduced the manufacture of aper into Spain. On the oldest speci men extant of this Spanish manufacture a treaty ol peace between the King of Aragon and a neighboring potentate, A. D. 1176, is transcribed. A manu script 'exists ia England, however, written upon cotton paper, bearing date A. U. 1049 ; but this paper was, no doubt, imported from the East. Paper at this early period was of ex ceedingly inferior qualitj-, being coarse brown, spongy and liable to srieedy decay. So much was this the case that in A. D. 1 "4 i the Empiror Frederic the Second of Gcrmanj' issued an order declaring null all documents written on this material, and fixing a terra of years within which they were to be transferred to parchment. Paper had hitherto been manufactured of raw cotton, hemp, or other vegetable fibie; but it now came to .light that rags having already undergone the process, not only of manufacture but of wear, was -better adapted to the purpose, leing moie easilj reducible to a fine pulp. We have, therefore, specimens of paper made from rags as early a9 the fourteenth century, the oldest extant " being a letter from Joinville to Louis the Tenth of France, dated A. D. 1315. The continued imperfection of this manufacture still necessitated the tran scription of all important documents on parchment or vellum. The parch ment was, as of old, cut into bands, joined endwise, so as to form rolls, some of the judicial acts requiring rolls twenty feet in length. Nor was this plan discontinued till the ISth century, when the co.lex, written on both sides, .became general. It must not be con cluded that ancient law parchments were alwuys lengthy affairs, however, ' there beinp contracts of salts dating A. 1).-1232 and 1252 only two inches long by five wide, and a will wiitten in A. 1). 1255 two inches by three and a half. The principle of paper making has been the same from time immemo rial, the only change being the material used and the machinery employed. The fibrous substance is cut and bruised in water until it becomes a fine noft pulp. This is taken up in a thin layer upon a frame of fine wire cloth that allows the moisture to pass through, when the pulp speedily eosg ulato into a sheet of paper. The sheets are first pressed between felt, winch being removed, the paper is again sub jected to a powerful pressure and dried, it is in this state bibulous, like b'.oS tinj; paper; but the sheets are now dipped in size, and again pressed and dnei For printing paper, however, the size is added to the pulp in the engine. Some idea may be formed of the im provement effected by machinery in this manufacture when it is stated that whereas by the hand process the paper took more thas three months to com plete, the rags may now be put into Ill irv 111 GOTHIMG!- ASSIMERES! My object, in, X M giving these figures, is to show th; profit of this branch of agriculture. I am now keeping on an average farm one sheep to every two acres improved land. The wool of each sheep averages : four pounds, but these 6hcep do not consume one-half the hay and grain raised, and do not receive any roots, j Last year I raised ray first crop of; sugar-beets and find that 30 or 40 tons mav be raised per acre I think these ' : will enable me to keep at least one ' sheep to every improved acre, and still j have one half the hay, grain, and roots :::: : left to feed the team and necessary i cattle. The wool produce was 6,500,000 jiounds, but at my estimate there would be 46,000,000 pounds, making a difference of $16, 000.000 at 40 cents per pound. This result is, of course, not attainable in one or two 3-ears; it must be brought about by degrees.
