Oh. lAimyln! ait (i.nt noir toinci t d.x ti mt I for .ma protest asriiinsl such a usurpation of my rights as the f mi her of children. We hav these schools estaldish -i by law. and the question now is. how are we to tfet rid of them when we lind they do not unswtr our purpose? If we cannot abolish tho system, why not .-irive Catholic, at least in cities and towns, where they can be divided without doing any injury, their amount of tax, and let them sciejt their own tcacliois und conduct their own schools? This would be justice to Catho lics. Well do the advocates of free rc'.iools know that thousands ot dollars are collected from poor Catholics to support free schools to which they do not scud a pupil, ioit main tain their own schools as best they can. bex iuuton, Ky., has ct an example in this partic ular. Wny Pennsylvania do likewise. I do not wih to enter into n discussion on this subject, nor do I think myself competent to discus-, so important a topic, for the 1 can ill already stated. For the benelit of those, however, who may feel inclined to take part in the discussion ot the free school system, I re fer fiiem to the editor of the New York Kir.t-ina'i'- Ji'inti'tK and a lso to a 11 nrt icle in that pa per of Jsn. blst. ultimo. Where the editor of the jou.nal referred to graduated I ain not, however, picpured to say. F. J. 1. ! Pr. AlHlSTtNE, Feb 3, lr71. I Mn F.nlTOH -I noticed in your excellent pa j per of Jan. 231 a communication signed "Kb ' ensburjf." in whie;h the writer ably and inc- i.ioiisly ilef'inbfl his viOA-sof uloir.iity in our j r'ublic schools ; but I think tin writer of tl.Rt I communication did nol I tilly coinprelietid the views of those who oppose t lie pre-ent pulilie ; s:h id systeni. and thus his e-oticin.-loiis were j formed and matured from a mistaken stand I point. Many oppose the present email system ! because their children do not receive in school the religious in. truction they ,1csir them to receive. '1 h pupils of our poblic e'iools can not be rejraided as immoral, for they are gen erally inoi iii. those who aro iuiinor.il bein ci ccp'ions merely to tho rule. M irality may exist inde pendent of all reliiriclls iust ruction, but Washiii;rton said, "Let us with caution in Julire tiio supposition lhat nioralily e-an be maintained without rllf ion,-' and Iluckmin ster said, 'Kelitfion will attend you ns a useful and pleasant companion iu every proper place and every temperate ojcii nation of life.'' The utile ist, infidel, and seolTor of all religions claim that they are moral. Morality in and can be maintained by proper religious training-, and this reli-rious training of pupils In school is what many parents are now demanding, not a 3 n favor, but as ah undoubted right for their children. This desire of many parents cannot be aratifteo iu the public schools without vio lation of school law. Koliirion includes a be lief in the beinirand perfection of (-tod. in the revelation of His w ill to man, in man's obliga tion to obey His oommands. In a future stateof reward and punishment, and in man's account ability ; and also true moral Godliness, or piety f life, with tho practice of moral d.ities, for the 'practice of moral duties without beiief in ; J, and without relerenee to His will or commands. Is not re-liirion. Now this is reli gion as defined by Webster. Thus we see that true morality and religion are associates, and are not to be separated. Now what, becomes of Ibe moral motto school training received by pupils in our public schools, snoken of by your correspondent " Ebcnsbni g " ? He ligious in struct ion cannot be given in nir public school j as now regulated by 'law; and this is the true reason why so many oppose the presont school system, and this is the ronl btnu-lpoiiu of oppo sition from which the de-renders of the system should derive their conclusions. Now t hi - contention and g rievous annoyance can be annihilated by cMablishine denomina tional schools. Let eaeli denomination build its own school houses and educate the ehildren of a.l parents who send to them as they s.e nroner. and then parents can have their iw igs I or. branches religiously inc lined if the-y wlsh j and when tho twigs or branches arrive at full bloom they are not likely to forget the rcli ' irious instruction in early.youtli, as we aro iu 1 formed that first iinpresior.s last longest ; and Christ said, 'Suffer little children tocoiue unto ' me, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven." I Then each denomination can teach the children I the way to obtain (rod's favor and bounty and i how to avoid (joci's displeasure and puuisli I ment. . . boine mav say that- the children or tnc poor will not thus obtain nn education. Fear not ; I each denomination will care tor a ui enm-aie ' ail tiie children b-Ioiiging to tln ir charge, or i who iniij be sent to their schools, and all tho ! denominations will thus be practising thegold- i rule.
