In the island of Capri theft is unknown; two murders are mentionad as having formerly taken place ; but the peaceful and industrious habits of the oeople keep tbem from violent crimes. Each knows the other by name life has no eecresy ; a bad man would soon be discov ered, unmasked, and obliged to leave the island. The greater number of the inhabi tants have never been on the mainland. Any ODe coming from Naples astonishes his simpler neighbors by description of car riages drawn by horses, there being neither cart nor vehicle of any kind in Capri ; as the roads are nothing more than staircases, they would not admit of them. The popu lar ignorance is great; there is a school in each of the towns, but only one master, who divides his days between them ; aod at eight years of age the children are sent to assist at the fishing, or to gather mulberry leaves lor the silk-worms, or grapes from the vines. Any notice of Capri would be incomplete without a word about the Blue Grotto. The entrench from the sea is so narrow, that the person in the boat must lie down ; but as soon aa that is passed you enter into fair land. The water, clear to the bottom, is of an exquisite celestial blue, which is reflected from the calcareous rocks in their pure white ness. It is a place of torquuise. built above a sapphire lake. The drops of water from the oars sparkle like pearls with a blue tinge. The effect upon the body is most singular ; the part uuder water of a swim mer is silvery while, with blue shadows around the muscles; whilst the head and neck, which are out of the witer, are of a bronze color, looking like an alabtster statue with a bronze head. It is certainly one of the mcst beautiful natural curiosities in the world. A fifherman was first to discover it in 1722, though there are some indications that it was known to the ancients. Much has been writtea as to ths caue cf so singu lar a phenomenon ; perhaps the most plaus illo is, that owing to the peculiar form of the entrance, the sea is saturated with light, which is shut up w ithin, and throws its rays to the f.uthest depths of the vault. In an other part of the coast, there is a grotto the color is that of pale green ; it is very similar to its neighbor, but not quite equal in teauty. A Stuange Animal in Colorado. That there exists in the mountains of Colorado beasts and animals unknown to the devotees of tcience, there canuwt bo the slightest couht. We have just learned from a trap per on the Greenhorn, a stream about tweuty miles south of I'uebla, who, whi! hunting elk and deer, saw a strange animal, at the tight of which he was not only aston ished but at first it caused him great fear. The hunter was. however, in a position that affjr-'.cd him protection, and after the first surprise and he had gaine'l an assurance of his safety, he watched the beast, and the following is a desciiption of the thing: It was larger than an ix, and of a kind of mouse color, with a skin varied with light etiipes, similar to those cf a zebra. Its head favored that of a rhinoceros, hut much larg er, and a bushy tail like that of a fox. The animal fed on grass, weeds, etc., and finally disappeared, crossing the creek, and goirjg up tho mountaitis, where it is likely the brute has a habitation if some kind. The next day our informant examined the tracks of this singular Un-king auimal, and found them to he like those of a horse, but a great deal larger. We caunot but believe the as sertion ( f the trapper to be entirely tui as the whole story is fully corroborated by Mr. Matt. Kiddle, barger, who lives iu that ntigborhood, and who has seen the same beast or one like it. We think that by the r.txt issue of our paper we w ill be able to give more authentic information on this mat ter, as we learn that a party of gentlemen are now in pursuit of this reenjitjg monstros ity, and are determined to capture tho aLi Uial, and thus give to the world and science another proof that there are still strange animals iu existence which, although scarce, are not entirely txtinct. Doubtless any substance would answer the Kama purpose as paper, the stopp;igo of the flow of blood being caused doubtless by the rapid motiou of the jtws, and the counter action of the muscles and arteries connecting the jtws and nose. Physicians say that placing a small piece of paper or muslin above the front U-eth, under the upper lip, and pressing hard on the tame, will arrest bieeding from the nose, checking the passage of the blood through the arteries leading to the nose. Nevkk "Knock. Undkr." No never. Always rally your forces for another and more desperate assault upon adversity. If calumny aail you. and the world as it is to do in tuch cases takes part with your tiaducer, don't grow moody and misan thropic, or worse still, seek to drown your unhappiness in dissipation. Bide your time. Disapprove the slander if you can ! if not, live it down. If poverty comes upon you like a thief in the night, what then? Let it rouse you, as a real thief would do to eu eigetic action. No matter how deeply you may Lave got into hot water always prove that you did not help the hither of lies to heat it your case, if you aiemadeof the right kind of ttuff, is not desperate, f..r it is in accord with the divine order ami sweep of things that should have no difficulties which an honest, determined man, with heaven's help cannot surmount. .Small Casks ok Incense for Perfi'miig Apaktsients.
