He is better now. Mrs. Anna Gillan, of Towanda, Pa., remembers the PRESS in a pleasant letter, enclosing a check for a weekly letter from home. Revs. Robt. McCaslin and T. \V Twitchell left on Tuesday for Philadel phia to attend the State Sabbath School Association, to be held in Baptist Temple this week. Mesdames Tiios. Miskell and P. W. Mrs. James Pearsall, of Goudersport, who has been visiting her children and families—Mrs. J. A. Fisher and Mr. Frank Pearsall—at this place, return ed home on Saturday. Mr. Cscar Health, was on Wedtiesi day of last week, called to his old home at Binghamton, N. Y., on account of the death of a sister, and dangerous illness of his mother. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Matley, now lo cated at Greensburg, Pa., where Mr. Matley is looking after some railroad work, stopped in Emporium on Friday last to look after their property here. Miss Nina Halsey, of Qroten, N. Y., is guest of Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Green and family. Miss Halsey visited here thirty-three years ago, as guest of her uncle, Caleb Swesey, deceased. A. O. Swartwood and Joseph Frein dle took a day off last week and land ed at Wade Spence's farm, where they had a first-class time, eating chickens Jos. Friendle will tell you how the chickens were cooked, if you ask him. Judge Walker and son Geo. return ed Saturday evening from visiting J. M. Walker and family at Scran ton, and meeting the Judge's oldest brother. They enjoyed their visit and met many friends, including former Emporium "ites. Rev. J. M. Robertson, Rector of Em manuel Episcopal Church left on Mon day for Monticelli, N. Y., to accom pany his family home, who have been visiting during the summer months at that place. They will visit at Toronto a couple of days before coming home. Wm. R. Sizer was deliv*ring the 'Celebrated Sizerville Magnetic Mineral Water in town on Tuesday. The old well has been cleaned out and reotised which has greatly increased the flow of water. Noble, of Sinna mahooing, Pa . has been invited by Dr. Atherton, President of State Col lege, Pa., to preach for the students of that Institution on Sunday, Nov. 12th. The privilege of talking to a thousand young men in a body is an honor not to be lightly esteemed. This is the lifth time within the last three years that Rev. Noble has had this honor. Mrs. Baptifite Revilla, of Philadel phia came up on Saturday to visit her brother, Mr. Thos. Gallagher and family. Her husband is one of the Stratford—Bellevue managers. L. Lockwood, one of Rich Valley's oldest citizens, who has been in feeble health for some time, was well enough to visit Emporium on Monday. He is now in his 81st year. Our old friend Robt. Armstrong, of Beechwood, while in town attending the Fair on Fridaj', dropped into see the PBESS and shoved his date ahead. He is employed at Medix Run. A good fellow. C. G. Freck, of Sheffield, years ago one of our hustling Republicans, shook hands with many friends in town on Monday. He came here to meet his wife on her return from visiting re latives at Coudersport. They left same day for Philadelphia where Mrs. Freck will receive medical treatment. Chas Diehl has moved into his new store. Both of Mrs. Rockwell's store rooms are occupied, Misses Ludlam and Mark Cumminge have moved in. Frank Dixon, the North Carolina orator one of the best in the land, will be an attraction at Teachers' institute, Nov. Ist. Murry <"fc Coppersmith dug up the water pipe on Tuesday, in front of their store and found the stopping due to a three loot dead eel that bad been crowded into the pipe. Their clerk saps he thought the water tasted rather ee!ish. A Reckless Shopper. A new story is being told of a mar ried couple for which the liusdand had been accustomed to doing all the buy ing. The husband being an industrious fellow, finally got so much business on hand to attend to that it became neces sary to turn the buying for the family over to the wife. One morning he told her to stop at the butcher shop and get a shin bono for soup. She asked what a shin bone was. The husband lifted his trousers and indicated the portion of the anatomy that produced it. But when the wife arrived at the butcher shop she had forgotten the name of the bone wanted, and to inform the butcher had to lift her skirta and show her shins. When she returned home she told her forgetfulnees and bow she had to show her shins to let the butcher know what she wanted.
