Last January one Truman A.Wright visited Emporium working in the in terests of an insurance company. After remaining here some time he called upon three of our business men and asked each to cash checks on Sec ond National Bank of Altoona to en able him to procure a mileage book. The following gentlemen were duped: Riley Warner, $25.00; Michael Murphy, $20.00 and Wm. McDonald, $25.00 and Wright departed and checks were re turned protested. It is supposed the sharper went to Texas, where he has since resided, until last week when he returned to Coudersport. Riley War ner informed of the whereabouts of the sleek rascal, caused a warrant to be issned and placed the same in the hands of Potter county sheriff. Yes terday a gentleman came to Emporium for the purpose of settling up the mat ter and paying the costs. Such chaps should be treated to a term in Pitts- i burg. Religious Notes. Considerable interest is shown here in the progress made by the Sinnema honing Oil and Gas Co., formed for the purpose of testing the territory in the vicinity of the Cameron and Potter county line. For some time past the work of or ganizing a company with sufficient capital to thoroughly test the territory has been progressing. The chief pro moters of the scheme Jtre Messrs. M. J. Colcord, of Coudersport, Dr. A. W. Colcord, of Austin, and Barclay Bros., of Sinnemahoning. The territory about to be tested is on the John Logue farm, at First Fork, a few rods from the county line, in Cameron. Already a large tract of land has been leased and it is expected that a thorough test will be made. The territory is situated on the forty-five degree line and on what is known as the Gaines oil belt and is about the center of 5000 acres of sup posedly good oil land leased for the purpose of making the test. Philips &Co , of Bradford have the contract of drilling and are now build ing the rig, etc. The work will pro gress rapidly and every indication now points to a successful termination of the plans. There are several well known capi talists of Austin connected with the enterprise and they are confident of getting a goodly supply of gas, if not oil, in paying quantities. Should they be fortunate in getting gas it will mean a big lift for Austin, as it is stated that a pipe would be laid into this place and a sufficient supply brought into Austin. It will prove a boom to this section as men of this place stand ready to con tract for a large supply to be used in manufacturing enterprises. Below we mention a few of the stock holders in the enterprise: Barclay Bros., Sinnemahoning; Logue Bros., First Fork; Geo. C. Bayless, Bingham ton; E. B. Yarger, A. W. Colcord, Austin; M. J.
