EDUCATION AND WAR- It Oos'.s M01O to Fire a Single Qun at Snnly Hook Thau It Oid to Educate Daniel Webster Cost! More to Build One Battle Ship Than to Build Hall a Dozen Colleges. The current number of Success says that the amount now spent for education in the United States is about two hundred million dollars a year. From present indications the annual appropiiation for the navy alone will mxii very largely exceed this sum, with prospects ol indefinite expansion. Until recent ly the combined military and naval expense of the country were less than one-fourth of those of educa tion. We are. therefore, progress ing four times ts fast in the arts of war as in those of peace. The latest type of battleship will cost light million dollars to build, as much as the entire appropriation for the army and the navy during the eight years of Washington's presidency, since which time the military and naval expenses have increased fifteen 'hues as fast as the population and when this ship is finished it will be merely an experi ment ! Fngland has had the largest experience in naval construction, and has recently declared a great number of her warships to be use less. Fight million dollars is more than three tinu-s the cost of all the buildings and equipments of Tutts College, Boston University, Will iams College and Amherst College. The yearly maintenance, operation, interest on investment, deteriora tion, and gun practiceof this battle ship will exceed one and one-half million dollars a sum sufficient to pay every living and educational expense of three thousand young men and women in our best colleges, or to meet the school expenses of fifty thousand children. It costs more for the mere material to fire one shot from the gnu at Sandy Hook than it did to educate Daniel Webster. A day's gun practice of a single ship, firing at imaginary enemies, costs more than it did to educate Kmerson, Longfellow, Lowell and Phillips iu Harvard , College. Any increise in appro priations and naval activity imme diately produces a corresponding increase iu activity by the other ?reat naval powers of the world, md this, in turn, excites us to fur ther expenditure, so none gains anything in relative strength. The urdeu is merely increased. The taxpayers of the different naval powers of the world are kept in a state of continual excitement a.id .ear by the activity of the others, each believing there is an intention to secure some unfair advantage, ind claiming that no other reason .an be offered in explanation of this ixtraordinary and unprecedented growth. There have beeu neces sary and honorable wars, aud the uture may have others in store. There are nobler sentiments than hose of peace duty, patriotism, ;ustice and honor but above them ill we 111;-" wrte love to man. To leny one penny of necessary appro priation or to cease one moment's .leeded activity in any geuuiuely jatriotic cause is so wholly uu Vmerican that I need not refer to L But it is far better to direct our abors toward the things that will uild up rather than toward those .hat tend to pull us down. It is far icbler and more in accoidance with he spirit of American development ind pre gress to direct our energies nto the channels through which we ; nay uplitt our entire country and iid the whole world. BE SOLD AGAIN- The lots iu the Neal addition that were struck off to C. W. Miller at public auction a few weeks asro. ' w 1 U he nfT,rfH n(ra 11 snnn fnr Mr. Miller bought the land be- b'eving that the Hoard of Trustees cf the Normal School would ratify his action, but as the Board refused to cio 'his, the report of sale on Mon day was set aside and a new order of sale gianted. As the Normal School must have a new building for the science de partments, the Board did not feel that they could afford to buy more land at this time. Gearbart to Delay Prusecuti on- It is announced on good authority that District Attorney Cicero Gear hart, of Stroudsburg, unless direct ed otherwise or superseded, will postpone consideration before the Grand Jury of the cases against four 1 ot the members of the Board of Trustees of the Fast Stroudsburg State Normal School, who are charged with violation ot the law in furnishing the school with supplies. The petition presented to Judge Staples for the supersedure of Gear bart aud the appointment of another officer to try the trustees was like a bomb to the friends of Gearhart, and he is preparing to make a vigorous fight against the proposi tion.
