THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBURG. PA. DaDgfir in Hops Jumping. Timid mothers who fully realize the dangers of the foot ball field for their sons rarely appreciate the perils of the apparently harmless jumping rope for their daughters. And yet the latter has its victims every year, and though they arc not so numerous us those of foot ball it would probably be found, if complete statistics were available, that the mean total reaches a figure sufficiently startling. One of the first deaths of the season from this cause occurred in Brooklyn, N. Y., last week, where a little girl of 9 years died from the effects of too prolonged indulgence in rope skipping. Jump ing rope may or may not be good exercise for girls when taken in mod eration, but it is very easy to overdo it, and when rapid and protracted it is a severe strain on children whose hearts are weak or who may be other wise delicate. What appears to have been a fiend ish attempt to poison the entire popu lace of Rockville was made there last week. Some scoundrel put a great quantity of Paris green in the village well, from which nearly all the citizens drink. The town is five miles west of Harrisburg, and the wholesale endeavor to assassinate the people has caused much alarm and excite ment there. The discovery was made by Jacob Tibbins, the village blacksmith's son. The pump stands by the roadside under a great tree in front of the village inn. This morning Tibbins when going to work felt thirsty and pumped up a cupful of water and drank it. It did not taste as usual, and while he was cogitating over the matter he grew deathly sick. A doc tor was sent for and with his stomach pump lie saved the young man's life. An investigation was made and traces of Paris green were found in the cup. Then it was discovered that a large quantity of the poison had been thrown into the well. The residents of Rock ville are greatly excited and are on the hunt for the villain. The pump was a great stopping place for Harris burg people who drove up the river road. There is no clue to the identity of the poisoner. The effort of any newspaper to build up a town is practically nullified unless it is backed up by business men. A stranger turns from the news columns of a paper to its advertising pages, and if he fails to find the busi ness card of the merchants and pro fessional arms, he comes to the con clusion that the publisher is not ap preciated, in which case it is" a good place for him to keep clear of. No town ever grew without the active as sistance of its newspaper. Nor can papers grow and build up their locali ties without the assistance of the town. Business men should realize this and remember in giving support to the newspaper that they are not only building up their own business, but helping to support that which is steadily working for the growth of the whole town. Franklin Transcript. C. P. Jadwin, of Scranton, has in connection with his son been engaged in arranging the details of a "horseless carriage," which promises to be a pro nounced success. The carriage is practically completed and the test will be made within a week's time. The motive power will be gasoline, which will be generated from oil. One in teresting feature will be tjie cheapness with which the motive power will be obtained. It is estimated that twenty five cents worth of oil will supply the power for twenty successive hours, thus placing the cost at one cent per hour. Tried to Bob Senator Quay. Senator Quay's committee room on public buildings 'and grounds was broken into last week and an unsuc cessful attempt made to break into his desk. The iron bolts fastening the doors at the top and bottom were pried out of the sockets, showing that strong tools had been employed. How It Got There. Something got wrong with a Jersey Shore gentleman's watch last Thurs day and he handed it to a jeweler for repairs. Upon examination a bed bug was found imprisoned in the works. How the mischievous little bug got there was a profound mystery until the Vidctte suggested that it got there between the ticks. At Sunbury a marriage license was issued by Recorder Haas a few days ago to Frank M. Johnson, a colored man, and Miss E. Coldren, a white girl, both of Milton. The papers, state they visited a Justice of the Peace to get married,' but that official refused to perform the ceremony. This is the fust license issued to op osite races in Northumberland county.
