'' 7 Humorist' Mind by th Advent of '' the New Year. Of course the serious business on . '" New Year Day is to make good teso ' ' lutions, and no person who respects 'V i' himself or has due regard for the pro prieties will begin to smash them un v til the bright eyed young cherub whom ' ie picture as the New Year has been 1 long enough in the world not to mind ' , tearing the crash of the fine china. - Come authorities on the etiquette of the day say that while the breaking ihould not begin before sundown of r . New Year Day, it may be inaugurated ' ' after that time, as the cherub, being fry young, and tired out with moving !h, may be presumed to have retired for the night. This however, is a v doubtful point, upon which it is not - ;i afe to act. Personally, I don't begin to toy ""with the good resolutions until late in .. the day. I work up to them by de crees. The first thing I do in the i i '. morning is to think over the good I ' have done. I find that lean finish '.this very nicely before breakfast by ' V getting up at my usual time, which is six minutes before James, my butler, i brings in the first course of sun-kissed strawberries. We should let our sor . ,' rows heal, if they will, instead of keep i. ( ingthem open, torn and bleeding, as ' i cowardly soldiers sometimes do to avoid the coming battle. Every editorial chair would be endow ed as professorships in universities and colleges are now endowed, and the editorial and business departments would be entirely independent of each other. I would also establish a na tional home ior retired and superan nuated newspaper men, admission to which would not be a matter of charity, but of right, and I would make sure of my own right of admis sion to that institution when my for tune was spent in the endeavor to make my newspaper selt supporting.
