A CVRIOVS PARADOX. Why Pea4 r.Mfcare la llutlif Than Peaa ef Ltad. Which it th heavier, a pound of feather or a pound of lead f This M favorite question with "school commit tea men" of the olden time, and the flrat rash answer used almost always to be, "a pound of lead!" Then from the older pupils would come the reply "Doth alike." If this question were asked to-day, our old-time querist might race! re a decided surprise. For the pound of feathers could easily be proved to be the heavier. A simple experiment is all the evidence, needed. With any accurate scales weigh out a pound of lead, nsing ordinary shot for convenience. Pour the shot into one of the pans of a balance. For the feathers a light muslin bag will be needed, and care must be taken that feathers and bag do not weigh more than a pound. When the bag of feathers is put into the other pan of the balance the beam will, after a few oscillations, come to rest exactly level So far the verdict, "Both alike," seems to be proved. But place the balance upon the receiver of an air pump, with lead and feathers undisturbed. Cover the whole with the glass bell jar and ex haust the air. Slowly the feathers sink, and the lead "kicks the beam," The pound of feathers is heavier than the pound of lead! The truth is that what wis called a "pound" was not such in fact. For the atmosphere buoys up everything within it in proportion to the bulk of the object, and the feathers, being of greater bulk than the lead, are supported by the air to a considerably greater extent than the lead. Removed from this supporting medium, their true weight is made evi dent. Charles Reade propounds a similar question. In one of his novels a Jewish trader is made to ask: "Which is the heavier a pound of feathers or a pound of gold?" After awhile he explains, to the satisfaction of his audience of mi ners, that the feathers are the heavior. Gold, he says, is weighed by Troy weight, while feathers are weighed by avoirdupois ; and as the twelve ounces in a pound Troy contain but 5,760 grains, while the avoirdupois pound contains 7,000 grains, the pound of feathers is, of course, 1,240 grains heavier than the pound of gold. Youth's Companion. An Ant Fnnaral. ' ' Whst man is there that has oo no. tlced the many funny little peculiar ities that are characteristic ot nearly ii of the dear women f Terhape you never did, so I am join, to call your attention to some of them nud just for fun watch and see if it in true. A woman seldom gets up from hr chair when she has been sewing or darn ing without letting a pair of scissors drop from her lap to the floor. Nine out of ten will do it. It would almost seem that the bother of having to stoop and pick them up would be sufficient to break them of the habit, but it does not and she keeps stooping for those scissors all her life. Did you ever notice a woman who is leaving friends, when sht is about to get on or leave a horse ear? She does not say her "goodbyes" until the oar his stopped, and then all sorts of requests, tneesages, kisses and "goodbyes" untii everybody is aut of patience and the car la ready to start One would think she could do all this beforehand, but the never does and that is all there is to it Did you aver observe ;how a woman throws a stone or anything? Or how she drives a nail t (This can't be des cribed.) Or how she "shoos" the chick ens with her skirts, apron and a sort of conglomeration between a courtesy, a twitch and a stoop f Did you ever notice when two women meet on the street how very sure they are to look back at each other after pass ing What do they do it for? How do they gauge just tha proper time to look back and not catch each other look, log. Did you aver see a woman try to use a shovel? Of course there is no need for her doing so, but she does sometimes and the sight is painful Did you ever know women to follow exactly any particular recipe, table or rule for mixing and cooking anything t No, you never did; they never do. They guess at everything, and while they hit it In many cases, when they don't they explain the failure by eaying they guess tuey did not get quite enough of this or that, or else the stove did not work right They hate rules or anything that calls upon them to do "exactly so, " and they had much rather guess at a "cupful," " teaspoonf ul " or quarter of a pound than to measure it These are only a few peculiarities, and they are not presented in a critical ssnse, but only as an observation. No doubt we fellows have an equal number of queer ways. What you lend is lost; when you ask for it back, you may find a friend made an enemy by your kindness. If you be gin to press him further, you have the choice of two things either to lose your loan or lose your friend. 13 and 15 West Market St. S a mm sseaaa m. aa. a. WILKES-BAR RE..
