THE COLUMBIAN. BLOOMSBURG, PA. POULTRY NOTES No. t4. As laying hens and those fattening for market require different food, it is best to keep them separate. As poultry and lice are antagonistic, it is best to keep them separate also. Breed is everything, says the South- em Fancier. The machine for con verting food into eggs must be the best to be had; anything and every thing will not do. Do not feed chicks for the first twenty-four hours after they are hatch cd. Brooding is what and all they want. It is best for the man of limited means to use great care as to the the building of poultry houses, etc., not to go to too much expense. If the house is good and warm and admits sunlight and is properly venti lated, will be sufficient. Remember that rats and chickens cannot be raised together profitably. One cock for ten hens of the larg er breeds, and fifteen hens of the small breeds is about right. It is best to change the food of fowls in case of bowel disease, as it will often effect a cure. W.
