Native guano, gathered from the hennery, will also afford a good lubstl tuto. Dissolve one pint of hen manure In thrco gallons of wntcr, and let it stand In t tho sun for two or threo days; water with it 1 twice a week, These stimulants are moro desirable for tho culture of celery in small gardens than for market gardening. They could not easily lie applied to several acres, but will strength en tho growth and Increaso tho slzo of a few (trenches.. Many amateur gardners mako a mlstako in earthing up tho stalks too early, before the i, plant has obtained a vigorous growth, and ' thus tho roots are buried too deeply for their health In most climates, the first or mid die of October Is soon enough to begin to blanch celery for winter use, and by that time the stalks aro largo and firm. Great care mint be taken not to cover tho crowns, i. e, the temlorest sprout) witli sand or earth. Use tho hand rather than tiio hoe or trowel while placing the earth around the stalks, and select a dry day for tho work. It is tho dampness of the soil when applied which frequently causes rust to attack tho stalks In two weeks earth up, or fill In again. Celery Is now considered a desirable bc- dativo for nervous complaints, and also a good digester of father dished". At any rite, it Is a very .delicious addition to dinners or suppers, and with tho expenditure of a littlo caro and troubio can be raised as readily by the-amateur as tho market gardener. Coun try Gentlemen. Pasturing Meadows. A paragraph is traveling quito extensively through our agricultural exchanges, recom mending pasturing meadows as a means of making them More "productive. It gives the name of a practical farmer who has tried it, id is sure ho knows that pasturing is tho preferable practice. All of which shows that there are exceptions to all rules. It is possiblo that under some circumstances pas turing meadows may bo really beneficial j but it by no means follows that it is to be generally recommended. For tho great ma jority of meadows pasturing at any season is undoubtedly injurious. The roots both of clover and timothy-are very liablo to iif jury by the tramping of cattle at any season. Cropping tho herbage diminishes tho vigor of the plant. If fed down in stirinc. it will usually bo-impossible to get more than half a crop. If fed closely after haying, tho nat ural shelter of tho plant and rooU for win ter is destroyed., Tho exception to this is where blue grass or red top completey'occupy theBoil. Their fine roots are scarcely injured when tho ground is dry, and the removal of surplus grass leaves the surface moro open to the warm sun3hinoof early spring. Tho intense cold of winter on a dry soil will not injure ' the roots of such a meadow, and there is a positive advantago in having tho ground clear and open to the warmth and light of spring. How much clover is injured by close pas turing may be seen by watching the bad ef fect which a wagon track, has made across the field. The crowns of the clover roots will bo found broken down, and the plant made about ns feeblo and stunted a growth as corn plants would under similar circum- stances. The hoof of a horse or cow is little l'ss destructive to clover wherever ittonches. Of course, rich full fed cattlo will wander but little and the injury will bo less ; but whoever expects to get the hfst result from having his fields seeded with clover should sec to it that stock of any kind is kept out of them, and that the crop is allowed to ob tain nearly Its full growth before rutting. Moore's Rural. lirceding Fowls. When it can bo done, mate tho best two-year-old hens with a fine, large, vigorous cock, one-year-old. Where pullets are used in breeding they should be mated with a cock two years old. A hen's first laying for the season will always give the best etiicks, She is then moro vigorous than after laying a long while. There is moro vitality and thrift in the earlier than in the late hatched chicks. Owing to tho great strength and vigor of the hen when the first begins to lay, there is moro vitality in the germ from which the chick starts, and it is character ized by a gieater robustness all through the period of growth and development ; there' fore, hatch early. When the chicks are old enough to show what they will be, all that do not come up to the mark should be cull ed and eaten, or marketed; this will leave moro room for tho good onfs. A "beginner sometimes thinks that his chicks may come on and outgrow some apparent defict, but, unless behave nerve to use tho axe freely, he will make slow progress In breeding Everything that docs not "fill the bill" at twelve weeks old should go upon tho broil Ing spit. Exchange. Jin miring Trees. A writer in the Indiana Farmer says that strong, frctih manure is not usually so good for fruit trees as good clean cultivation .with out it j and that peaches and apples grown with manure, are less sound and have a poor er flavor. When the same degree gf vigor can bs imparted to tho trees with cultivation aloue, the fruit Is better for it. This state ment reminds us of tho remark made, many years ago by W. A. Underbill, brother of Dr. Underbill, of Crotou Point, (widely known to grapo growers,) that in his own vineyard be used no manure, but cultivated once a week till the grapes had formed ; and that these grapes were better ripened and sweeter than those in the doctor's vineyard where mauuro was ued and less cultivation given. "It is a waste of valor for us to do battle," said a lamo ostrich to a negro who had sud denly como upon her In a desert; "let us cast lots to see who shall be considered the victor, and then go about our business." They cast lots: thetiegro cast lots of stones, and tho ostrich cast lots of feathers. Then tho former went about his business, which consisted in skinning tho bird. Norristown Herald : A St. Louis woman says it is no worse to encircle a Lilly's waist with your arm in a ball room than to hug voiir friend's sister on tho back stairs. No worse? Why, it is not as good I An inn-keeper observed a postillion with only one spur, and inquired tho reason. He was a wonderfully-practical man, says tho Danbury AVir, and she was marvelously poetical. To her life had been a dream edged with gold and filled in witli tho love liness of roseate hues, liut to him had ap peared everything in tho homc-spuu garb of every-day life. He is a country merchant and buys his goods in New York. His part ner always went to the city on business in connection with the grocery, hut the partner was recently taken ill, anil our extremely practical friend was obliged to go. It was his first visit to tho great city, and ho was to bo gone three days, It was a momentous event to his fond wife. His carpet-bag was packed and his hand on the door to pass out of tho house, when she put her arms around his neck, and cried "John, you are going away." This was so palpable that it would have been madness to attempt a denial, so ho merely observed : "Look out for my collar, Maria." "You will think of your wife while you are gone?" she whlspeied huskily. He was n trlllo nervous under tho pres sure of her arms upon his collar, but he spoke reassuringly: "I will bear It in mind, my dear." "You will think of-me us mourning your absence and anxiously awaiting you: re turn!" she murmured. "You can trust rco to attend to it," ho re plied, with as much firmness as if it had been a request for six barrels of mackerel "And you'll be very caieful of yourself for my sake?" she suggested, in a broken voice. "I will tee it is attended to, my dear,' but it U almost time for the train," and he gravely sought to remove her arms from his neck, "John I John I" she convulsively cried, "don't forget 1110 " ".Maria," he eaid, with a tinge of reproach in his tone, "I have made a memorandum to that eflect."
