THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH! PHILADELPHIA TUESDAY, JUNE 27, 1871. LiTEnATunn. tlXVlEW OF NEW BOOKS. . 'Fairmonnt Tark" is the title of ft work just published by Claxton, Remsen & Ilafiel fioger. Ita author, Charles Keyser, Esq., a well-known lawyer of this city, is a gentleman of intelligence and high mental culture, and "Fairmonnt Tark" is both a Tain able and extremely interesting volume, which will be found .a most useful as well as attractive guide-book. The subject has been ably treated, and displays in its careful compila tion a fund of anecdote and data which are evidence of faithful research. In diction Mr. Eeyser's work is unexceptionable, and in many of bis descriptions his language is ele gant and choice, displaying strength as well as beauty. From among the many points of interest this book contains, we quote his tribute to the memory of Robert Morris, which, while it cannot fail to interest the reader, may be accepted as a sample of the writer's style. In his description of "The Hills," the former home of Morris, and now called Lemon Hill, Mr. Keyser says: "In that old mansion, which Morris so loved, and which was at last his refuge, have been assembled as his guests the honored men in this land Franklin, John Adams, Hancock, many of the signers of the Declara tion, members of Congress, and officers of the army and navy. On these grounds he re ceived from all the States and from patriotio hearts in other lands tributes to his financial power and financial honor resolutions and gifts which he preserved through all his after mibfortunes. Here he originated those en terprises, evidences' of which yet remain on this river, and which, in far advance of his age, extending over all the States and em bracing the prominent industries of his time, culminated in his utter rnin. Here also took place that last scene in his life the great financier bowed down with age, helpless to preserve his own fortunes, following an officer down these terraced grounds, to be consigned, by laws now for the honor of human nature obsolete, to a common jail. "And here remains forever the regretful re membrance that the owner of land in all the States, of a palace whose marble walls rise in mockery of his fate before the black stones of his prison, and of these fair grounds a man whose money, as much as their strong arms, transferred to the people the title and the lands of this great Commonwealth, and the broader area of the nation, met such a fate. "The palace mocks no more the prison blights no more the earth where it stood what was mortal of Morris moulders in the grave but the results of his life remain for human happiness; and these grounds, sad dened while ennobled by their association with his name, remain his fitting monument. The air that blows about them is the common property of the poorest as of the wealthiest. Their verdure grows for the little child, igno rant of the meaning of property, and for the old man who has seen it swerjt awav from him forever. The water that flows along them is the common heritage of all. "Within them every man stands in every right the equal of his fellow-man." The descriptions of all the spots of interest are as well given, and the book will certainly be appreciated by the citizens of Philadel phia. A number of excellent illustrations by well-known Philadelphia artists add . to the attractions of the volume. Owen Meredith's metrical novel of "Lucile," embellished with a number of Du Maurier's capital illustrations, has been issued in cheap pamphlet form by James 11. Osgood & Co. The 6tory is one of great interest, and is wonderfully well told. This cheap edition will be very handy for tourists and sea-shore visitors, and All up a stray oorner of a satchel or carpet-bag; and to those who are not familiar with the poem, we can promise good enter tainment in its perusal. A number of the author's shorter poems are also given. For sale by Claxton,. Kemsen & Haffelfinger. Messrs. Porter & Coatea are the Phila delphia agents for the following new publica tions of D. Appleton & Co.: "The Novels and Novelists of the Eigh teenth Century," by William Forsyth, M. A-, Q. 0., is an attempt to illustrate the manners and morals of English society in the last cen tury by means of the works of fiction which were popular with the grandfathers and great grandfathers of the present generation. Mr. Forsyth has compressed a vast amount of information into a very small space, and he not only carries out hia leading idea, but he gives admirable summaries of the most famous novels of the last century, with critical remarks about the writers and their styles that are in the highest degree interesting. This brief volume con tains pretty much everything that all except enthusiastio students of literature need care to know about such writers as Mrs. Behn, Fielding, Smollett, Richardson, Mrs. Hey ward, Mrs. Manley, Miss Burney, and other once popular writers, and it will be an excel lent introduction to the literature of the eighteenth century for those who have a de sire to investigate it for themselves. Professor Tyndale's notes on Light and Electricity, for his lectures at the Royal In stitution, which were published in England in two volumes, have been issued in one volume by the Messrs. Appleton. These notes, which sum up briefly the leading facts and principles of the sciences of Light and Electricity, will undoubtedly be highly ap preciated by both teachers and pupils. "Pickwick Papers," embellished by a Bteel portrait of Diokens and a number of illus trations, form the first volume of a cheap but neat and very attractive edition of Dickens' works, which will deserve popularity. The CaUtolic Record for July has an inte resting leading article entitled "What the Catholic Church has done for Woman, " and a variety of other readable essays, poems, sto nes, sketches, eto.
