THE DAILY EVENING Ti?LEGRAPIl PHILADELPHIA, FRIDAY, J ANUARY 13, 1871. 5 musical, Ainn Pua.nA.Tic. Db .'lrn, inl" by the Uerinnn Troupe. The largest audience of the season was at tracted last evening by 'the performance of Mozart's great opera of Don Giovanni, a work that never palls upon . the taste, and that is always well worth hearing no matter' how Imperfectly it may be rendered. - The performance lust evening, like those previously given by the German troupe, Was distinguished by a general eventless of merit rathet than by any great qualities. There were Imperfections, especially in the concerted passages, none of which were perfectly sung, but, taking It as a whole, the opera was better done than it frequently has been, while two of the principal rotes, "Donna Anna" and "La porello," were sustained by thoroughly com po cnt ' artists, Madame Llchtmny and Carl Formea. The lady sang with admirable dra matic expression, and it Is worthy of bote that she introduced the cele brated "letter aria", which has been omitted of late years on account of it difficul ties by every prima donna except Madame Parepa-Rosa. Carl Formes has long been cele brated as one of the best representatives of "L-porello" on the stage, and as he was In ex cellent voice last night, his performanee was greatly enjoyod. The part of 'Zerlina" was creditably represented by Mad'lle Haffmer, although she is far from being equal either as an actress or Binger to many of the artists who bave appeared in it. The weakest performance was that of '"Donna Elvira" by Mad'lle Roemer, whose vocal abilities were scarcely equal to the requ'.iements of the role. The other parts were creditably sustained, Mr. Bernard appearing as "-Uon Ootavio," Mr.Vierllng as "Dob Giovanni," nnd Mr. Franosch as the "Commander." Tha CUT AinitMtuien(s At the Academy of Music Wagner's ro- mantic opera of 1'annhauser will be performed by the Gern.an trouoe, with the following cast: "icuzabetb, ' Mme Llcntmay; "Venus," iMad'lle Roemer; "Shepherd," Mad'lle Hatner; "Tann haueer.'iMr. Bernard; "Wolfram," Mr. Vierling; "Walter," Mr. Uabelmann; and "lilterolf," Mr. Formes. A matinee will be given to morrow, when Martha will be performed.with M'me Llchtmay, Miss Clara Pearl, and Messrs. llabelmami and Carl Formes in the leading roles. The season will close to-morrow evening with Weber's romantic opera of Der Freischutt. At the Chesnut Mr. and Mrs. Florence will have a farewell benefit this evening, when they will appear In Uandy Andy, Mischievous Annie, and The Returned Volunteer. To-morrow evening The Lady of Lyons will be given, with Mr. Charles B. Thorne, Jr., and Mies Phlllis Glover is the leading roles. At tbi Walnct the drama of The Great ,1 Vity will be represented this evening. A matinee to-morrow. At thb Arch the comedy of Coquettes will be performed for the last times this evening aud to-morrow. At tiii Amateur Drawing-room, Seven teenth street, above Chesnut, Mr. Rufus Adams will appear this evening as "Shylock," in The Merchant of Venice. FROST, T"88- The bonds are Issued at 120,000 per mile against the portion only of the line fullv completed and equipped. The greater part of the road Is already in opera tion, and the present earnings are largeiy In excel of the operating expenses and Interest on the bonds. The balance of the work necessary to establish throngs connections, thereby shortening the - dis tance between St. Paul and Chicago 5 miles, and 90 miles to St. Louis, Is rapidly progressing, In time for the movement of the coming grain crops, which. It Is estimated, will double the present Income of the road. The established character of this road, running as It does through the heart of the most thickly-settled and richest portion of the great State or Iowa, to gether with Its present advanced condition and large earnings, warrant us la unhesitatingly recommend ing these bonds to Investors as, In every respect, an undoubted security. A small quantity of the Issue only remains unsold, and when the enterprise Is completed, which will be this falu an Immediate ad vance over subscription price may be looked for. The bonds have fifty years to run, are convertible at the option of the holder Into the stock of the Com pany at par, and the payment of the principal Is pro vided for by a sinking fund. The convertibility privilege attached to these bonds cannot fall to cause them, at an early day, to command a market price considerably above par. U. S. Five-twenties at pre sent prices return only iyi per cent, currency Inte rest, while these bonds pay 9jtf per cent, and we regard them to be as safe and fully equal as a security to any Railroad Bond Issued; and until they are placed npon the New Ybrk Stock Exchange, the rules of which require the road to be completed, we obligate ourselves to rebuy at any time any of these bonds sold by us after this date at the same price as realized by ns on their sale, ' All marketable securities taken In payment tree or commission and express charges.
