I T 1 M THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH rHILADELHIA MONDAY,' FEBRUARY U, 1870. v THE ST. LOUIS GHOST. Tike llnbble FJtv'lodrd -Thn Horrible fHvofory Nothloa bat a Felly Trlrk-Arreot ol the llhost Her. The Missouri Dtmoorat, of the 12th ln.it., eay: Much has been said and commented upon in reference to the numerous storlos that have lieen afloat during the past week, In regard to the haunted house on the corner of Sixteenth and Monran streets. Now for the tnodun ope randi by which the spirits porfornied their nightly prodigies. Homo time ago, wnon the hotiso was first vacated, and the Interior left In good order, a gang of loafers who adopt vacant houses as their a bod o made this particular dwelling a ren dezvous. Their first achievement was to steal all the flro grates; then tho load pipe loading from the sink to tho kitchen out into the yard was broken off and went the way of all stolen lead pipe- to a junk shop. In ono of the rooms a grate was left for the purpose of keeping a fire to cook the bacon on which tho spirits fed; and from the quantity of rinds, bread-crust scraps, etc. on tho floor, tho ghosts must have been not of the loan and hungry kind. The two buildings adjoining are occupied as a medi cal Institute, bouio ot tho occupants of which bearing tho heavy tramps of feet over the bare floor, fed the flames of wondor by re porting to Inquirers that thoy hoard unnatural noises at midnight. This, of course, was spread, and manufactured into weeping and walling and gnashing of teeth, Imagination helping the greedy believers to sundry other noises which neither they nor any one else ever heard. Fi nally, the parties who made the house their nightly abodo learned that a tonaut would soon occupy the premises. Not wishing to Uo oiuted, they bit upon a plan to give the coining tenant n scare which would leave them lu full c introl. They obtained a piece of bell-wire, wnich they laid along the under surface of the kitchen floor. To one cud was attached a largo rubber clastic. The other end came out even with the back cellar window, which could easily bo removed. On this end of the wire a loop was formed, to which could bo attached a stout cord leading into the small prlvato alley. The rubber band was fastened over a wooden cleet nailed to the lower surface of tho floor, so that when It was allowed to snrlug back It could do so without any daoger of Its becoming loosened. Fastened to this elastic by a piece of strong twine was a small iron nut, and this it was that did the rapping attributed to the spirits. When the party who rented the houso took possession, the spirits would make their appearance about midnight, fasten their cord to the wire, retreat to a safe distance in the rear, draw the wire, and let it spring back with great force. Tho iron nut would strike against the floor, making a noise loud enough to have awakened the seven sleepers. Two or three nights were suOlclent for the new tenant, and a hasty exit was made. Of course the story went with the disturbed oc cupant, and soon grew to a full-blown marvel. No ono would rent a house so disgraced by keeping Its occupants awake, aud thus tho bacon eaters and bread crust grinders were left in full enjoyment. After a while, when the troublo had about subsided, the young lady in question took tho matter up; called for the keys at the agent's; left a dollar for security; placed her bed, stove and chairs in tho building; and in the course of a fow hours, with tho assist ance probably of a shrewder head than her own, manufactured the sensational story which has been going the rounds of the papers, and which hundreds of people have been ready to believe. "We hope this will now end the so-called ghost etory. The girl Jennie, it seems, has for some time been watched by the police:. We regret to say that hor reputation in police circles is not as good as it ought to be. Policemen say she is a "dead beat" that she is iu the habit of going about, principally among colored people, and pretending to be a clairvoyant, or something of the sort holding communion with departed ' spirits, and charging fees for so doing. Yester day she was arrested in Urn Third district, and will be tried on a chare ' of false pretenses, pro vided the witnesses uivuur. She tells conflict ing stories about herself sometimes saying that ehe is a teacher, and sometimes that she paints for a living. She has been living for several days with her mother, in a small house on Green street, near the corner of Fourth, with a family of colored people. It is believed that she will hereafter bo troubled by something more substantial than ghosts. MUSICAL. AI1 IllAlrlATlC. The t'llv Arauaemrmta. This gentleman Is said to have very nnusual abilities as a comedian, especially In such parts as the ono chosca for bis debut. As ho purposes to adopt the stage for a prolea Bion. the performance of Friday will be one of much interest. Good low comedians are almost as rare as good high tragedians, and the stage Is deficient in first-dab farco actors more than any other class of performers, Mr. John 8. Clarke has never had a successor on the I'hlludol- iihla stage since he took to starriug, and If Mr. Irady can fill his place with even an approxi mation to success, be will bo certain ol an en- tbnsbiHtlc welcome and a brilliant success.
