Tho Elkton Whig, commentincr on the Wilmington (Del.) Commercial's proposition to tan the main line of tho Delaware liailroad ' at Delaware Junction, to connect with tho proposed road to Baltimore, in preference to says that it reads like a huge joke, when we glance at the map of the peninsula. By a few short connections, which are either in progress or contemplation, tho building of a railroad to Masseys from Elkton would as effectually connect with the whole system of peninsular railroads, as a branch from Elkton to the junction, with the advantage of equa lizing the distance between the entire Eastern Shore and Baltimore, with the shorter route now enjoyed by Philadelphia and Wilming ton. This is the object for which Baltimore is asked to contribute towards building such a road; not that Elkton may be connected more closely with the Delaware Railroad. Tho distance between the Eastern Shore and Bal timore by the construction of a railroad to Massoy's would bo about the same that it now is to Philadelphia, and by no other means can that object be accomplished; and this is why Baltimore should aid in building the road, "t The Pennsylvania Central liailroad is instructing forty new cars to be run between ttt MIT Ian ttsbnrg and New York. The Heading rnai gives a graphic description ot tnese bantiful travelling boudoirs. The feature tost acceptable to the night traveller, so long lemanded and so much needed, is the fact rhat each car will be lighted with gas, by means of the compressed gas cylinder used ior lighting the Heading Railroad cars so sue essfully for ten years post. When may we ook for gas in the night cars between New ii'ork and Washington, and between Philadel phia and Washington? Congress is just Lb.out to open, and crowds take this train in preference to the day. The bright light lafforded to passengers on other great roads Would be a special providence to persons Y'Tced to evening travel between the capital jnd the great cities of the North. I The Louisville Courier says: Work on ho Evansville, Henderson, and Nashville Hailroad will be commenced in a few days, at IMadisonville, and the road built into the coal pines as rapidly as the season will permit. 'lie work from Hopkinsvillo will be com menced at an early day, especially at the F";iint8 of heavy work, and the wholo pushed f'f rward to the coal mines north and south t ide at the earliest practicable date. It is the mrvuA -,f tin nnnt.rflM.nrfi in finnrmlatA f Via i wrole work in ten months. The enterprise t won enjoy the prestige of the patronage and j influence of the Pennsylvania Central llail I road, which secures its success. The coin- plttion of this road, and of the Elizabethtown ' ft Paducoh Railroad, will probably do more Junrich and develop the Green river country Vi an tne Improvements heretofore mado, iw ill add many times their cost to the th of that section. y The railroad enterprises of the country era proved by the quantity of railroad iron imported: i'tar. The above table is compiled ' be direct entries for consumption and Vals front the warehouse, and exhibits itities upon which duties were Jpaid. Tho quantity for the year tnrns already made. In spit e of the enormous and unjustifiable duty, tho ineroasod imports are very large, such is the zeal in tho country to go ahead with railroads. Just at present, more than ever before, aro such schemes on foot. Tho Southern States aro largely ongiignd in constructinc new lines of railroad. In Georgia alone seven new railways aro under construction, and some of them aro approach ing completion. That from Macon to Bruns wick, .no miles, has been nearly all built since tho war,' and will soon bo in running order, 'xho Atlanta and uhaiiotto Railway is fairly commenced, and ono section will soon bo opened. Another road, from Brunswick to Albany, 175 miles, is begun. In Alabama sovcral groat lines aro under way, and most of tnem aro ol importance. 'Ilio route trom Chattanooga to Meridian, Misnissippi, through Northern Alabama, has 155 miles in running order; and of the new lines proposed one runs lrom Urimn to JJccatur, 2.ii miles, one trom Montgomery to Decatur, 1 s:i miles, and another from Chattanooca to Montgomery, with others of less consequence In Tou- ncssee, there is nreat interest manifested in lines to connect tho Ohio valley with tho Gulf. Tho news of tho progress of tho Utah Central Railroad is exceedingly gratifying. Upwards of eleven miles havo been laid, including switches, bringing tho rails within four miles of Kay's croek; and should iron como on as soon as expected, it is hoped that tho lino will bo finished to Kay's Ward in a short time. It is tho intention to build a Rwitch at Kay's Ward; and when that is completed, there is good rea son to hope that wo shall havo coal delivered there from tho beds of tho Wesor, as Super intendent Young says it is his intention to bring it on the line to that point. Arrange ments nave ieen made lor building a tank at l'armington, and probably another will be built at Kay's Ward. Thoso who have had the pleasure ot riding on the lino say that it is excellently laid, and old railroad men say tnat it is as gosd a lino as is to bo found in the I'Dited States . Tho Eastern Shore Railroad Company, who wore to resume control of their own road November 1, will not do so until Decem ber 1. This is tho Delaware Railroad be tween Delmar and Cristiold, and has been operated by tho Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Jjallimore liailroad Company. Thackeray ami the American lto II1SSI1. From ftarnum's Keif Autobiwjroiihy. When the lato William M. Thackeray made his iirst visit to tho United States, I think in 1852, ho called on me at tho Museum with a letter of introduction from our mutual friend, Albert Smith. Ho spent an hour with mo, mainly for the purpose of asking my advico in regard to tho management of tho course of lectures on "The English Humorists of the Eighteenth Century, which ho proposed to deliver, as ho did afterward, with very great success, in tno principal cities of tho Union. I gave him tho best advice I could as to management, and tho cities he on-ilit to visit. for which ho was very grateful, nud he called on me wnenever lie was in Now York. I also saw him repeatedly when ho came to America tne second time with his admirable lectures on "The Four Georges," which, it will he re membered, lie delivered, in tho United States, in the season of 1855-0, before he read tnese lectures to audiences in Great Britain. My relations with this great novel ist, I am proud to say, wore cordial and inti mate, and now, when I called upon him, in .. , at nis own houso, ho grasped me heartily uy tne nand, and said: "Mr. Barnum, I admire von more than ever. 1 nave read the accounts m tho papers of tho examination you underwent in tho New l ork courts, and tho positive pluck you ex hibit under pecuniary embarrassments is worthy ol all praise, lou would never have received credit for the philosophy you mani- lest it tnese rinancial misfortunes had never overtaken you. I thanked him fer his compliment, and ho continued: "But tell mo, Barnum, are you really in need ot present assistance r tor if you are you must ie neiped. 'Not in the least," I replied, laughing; "I need more money to get out of bank ruptcy, and I intend to earn it; but so ior as uany Dread is concerned l am quite at ease, for my wife is worth .fo0,000or 40,000." -X "Is it possible he exclaimed, with evident delight; "well, now, you have lost all my Bynipatny; wny, tnat is more than l ever expect to bo worth; I shall be sorry for you no more.
