THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAP1T PIHLADELPII1A, MONDAY, AUGUST 2, 1869. 5 I AFFAIRS IS BALTIMORE. Tim Itrlrn of Iullne-The firemen Strum I.lntt Another Line of tJerman Ocean Nteiun. era Talked of. From Our Own CorrtttponaenL Baltimore, Aug. 1. Our city has been for omo weeks past, and now is, unusually dull and quiet. More citizens Lave gone out of town, to the watering-places, country retreats of various kinds, and to Europe, this summer, than ever before in any one season. The city seems almost deserted, and business of every kind is at a etand-still. Our new lino of steamers to Bremen Las af forded favorable opportunities for persons Visiting the other side, and very many taking advantage thereof, are now in Europe. This has been one of the most successful enterprises ever established in Baltimore. There are now four first-class ships on the line, giving us an arrival and departure weekly. There is as much busi ness iu the way of freight nnd passengers goi and coming as they are iible to accommodate. It is thought, indeed, two more steamers may yet be added, and enough bo found for them to do. Being connected as they arc with that powerful work, the Baltimore and Ohio Rail road, their success is the greater and triumph more complete. It alone can supply the line with tonnage. It is amazing to see the amount of freight brought from all parts of tho West for shipment to Europe by these steamers, and like wise the vast quantity that comes in them con signed directly to points on the railroad through out its immense ramifications and vast length. Your city of Philadelphia, in connection with Us great Pennsylvania railway system, should lose no time in emulating our example regard ing ocean navigation, and establish a German line similar to tho one we have. If she does not, Baltimore will unquestionably secure perm a nently a largo amount of trade that would otherwise naturally seek Philadelphia. Speak ing as a Baltimorean, I of course can have no objection to our success in this respect, but sol fishness nocd not prevent mo from uttorlng a truth hi which your citizens are most deeply Interested. As what is termed our Northern Central Rail Way is under the absolute control of your Penn sylvania Road, giving full, free, and easy con nection, competing with the Baltimore and Ohio for Western trade, it is quite certain President Garrett will afford no facilities beyond what he can avoid to any company opposing him. Hence especial care is taken to secure all the passen gers and freight coming by tho Bremen steamers to tho Baltimore and Ohio Road. There has been and now is some talk of se curing certain privileges whereby auothcr line of German steamers, to sail from some promi nent port in Germany for Baltimore, is to be established. Tho supposition, indeed tho full understanding, is that it will be connected with the Northern Central and the Pennsylvania Rail roads. They can have a depot at the Canton wharf, giving them equal advantages with tho Baltimore and Ohio and the present Bremen line at Locust Point. There will be no dillkulty in procuring a track directly to the landing. I assert again Philadelphia, or her business men, stand greatly In their own light if they permit this to be done. Let them, by all means, regardless of cost, move at once in the matter, before it Is too late, and secure their own line of steamers, connected with their own Pennsyl vania Railroad; otherwise they must unques tionably suffer in their commerce and business. Baltimore, though seemingly small, is now marching ahead with rapid strides, nnd she is sure to be felt by those who fail in competing with her in these important enterprises. I speak of truths apparent and potential. They cannot be made light of by your citizens. The railroad fever is decidedly alive in our re gion. Works of this kind, small and great, are being projected, and some of them now under construction, all over the State. We have a live Governor and an enterprising Mayor in this respect. They go in heart and soul for all such enterprises. The Western ? Maryland Railroad to Hagcrs town and Wil'iamsport has been retarded only for the time I cing by an injunction preventing Baltimore Cl y from giving it the million of dol lars authorii ed by a recent ordinance. This, however, will soon b set aside, and the work completed. Our city, excepting some diarrhrea, has been remarkably healthy, barriug an unusual mor tality among children from summer complaint. Bona. MUSICAL AK1 lIt ASIATIC. Bryant's Minstrels will commence their second week at the Arch Street Theatre this evening. The burlesque of Lucretia Borgia, ttie Black l)octres, will be produced, together with several other novelties. Mr. Bryant himself, we notice by the advertisements in the New York papers, is announced to appear in that city this evening at Niblo's Garden as "Suauu the Post" in Arrah-na-l'ogue. As Mr. Bryant's intention to be absent from the Arch this week has not been announced here, the supposition of the Dlavirolnsr public of course is that he will appear as usual. This is not fair treatment to the pub lic of this city, who have very liberally patron ized this troupe since thev have been at tho Arch, and Mr. Bryant certainly owes an expla nation. CITY ITUJIS.
