Atkin son, who has been Treasurer of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company for nearly thirty years, died middenly about nix o'clock yesterday afternoon, wbilat engaged In his ofllce at the Camden 8trcct Depot. Ho was a widower, and had Rotten married only two weeks ago to tho mother of his son's wife, lie leaves an estate estimated at two hundred thousand- dollars. Ills funeral takes placo to-morrow. We have had almost Incessant rain since nljd.it before lust, which seriously Interfered with tho juveniles and youn devotees of romance in their projected Mayings and picnics arranged for yes terday. An unusual quantity of rain fell last flight and to-day. Tho Tenth Provincial Council of Catholic Bishops, etc., closed its sessions at tho Cathedral to-dny by another grand procession from the Archbishop's palaco to the Cathedral, where Im posing services were held. A large crowd was present. Hon. John L. Thomas, Collector of the Port, entered upon the duties of his olllco yesterday. Thus far he has nmdc only a few subordinate appointments, embracing Assistant Collector, Chief Clerk, Cashier, etc. There Is a terrible pressure for other places. It is fully understood a tolerably clean sweep will bo made of all em ployes who cannot show a clc.ir'rccord, politi cally or otherwise. This applies to all depart ments, Including Custom House, Post Ofllce, In ternal Ke ven uo, Courts, etc. . The idea is to emulate the example in this respect set by tho Democracy when it obtains placo and power. It is considered safest to take care of those known to be true supporters of the party. It may be considered almost certain that our city will furnish' the required tneaus, about a million of dollars, to complete the Western Maryland Railroad to Hagerstown and the Po tomac. This will greatly enhauce the valuo of the company's bonds and stock. Judge Bond, who represents the extreme wing (radical) of the Republican party here, ia most likely to get the new judgeship in the United States Court for the Maryland district. PTBWS SUflZBIAlVg. The key to the safe In which we kept onr securities was locked Inside of our fire-proof book safe, the doors of which were literally cut to pieces; from this they obtained the key to tho other safe anil opened it. Fortunately we had ono of your Burglar-Proof Banker's Chests Inside, In which our valuables were deposited. This they went to work at with a will, and evidently used np all their time and tools in vain attempts to force it. The night was dark and stormy, and the fact of their knowing where our key was kept shows that their plans were well matured. They tried wedging tho door and body of the Chest, and the faithful Bafe bears evidence of the labor and skill devoted to the work. All was useless, and it is with great satisfaction we report that upon opening it we found onr securities all safe, and can therefore cheer fully Indorse the Burglar-Proof work recommended by yon. You will please send tho new safe purchased by us to our counting-house, and take the old one, to show that some safes are still manufactured woithy of the name. David Dowa & Co.
