The exPratIt!nt on the Ktnmp. On Saturday Knoxvllle was crowded with the friends of Andrew Johnson. In the morning, at 11 A. M., a special train arrived from Green ville with Air. Johnson, who was greeted by a delegation of citizens, and escorted to the La mar House. After a short delay, Mr. Johnson was Introduced to the assembled crowd, nam bering about rive thousand. 3 The ex-President, after returning thanks for the cordiality of the welcome, said he had en deavored to protect the Constitution, and all he asked was. a fair examina'ion of his record. He intended to devote the remainder of his lite, as a private citizeD, to the vindication of his offi cial life ffOm foul obloquy which had been heaped upon him; though bent, he had not been broken by the storm which had nearly wrecked the ship of state. When the Congress of ihe United States, excited by interest aud a spirit of tyranny, transcended the Constitution, be vetoed the bills and sent them back. Look at the taxes of the State and Federal Governments. The Federal Government Cul lects $15,000,000 three times as much as was necessary a lew years ago lor the whole expense of the Government to pay tho bondholders. You black men might as well know this, that while they have been enfranchising you and disfranchising white men, they have been mak ing you slaves. Yes, you are all slaves together to the bond holders, who never shed a drop of blood. I would to God that the Government bad not had the credit to borrow a dollar to carry on the war 1 If the people had had beforehand to pay the cost ot the war we should never have had one. Thank God, my march has not been through Golcotha. My honors have not been gained by blood. The widows and the one armed soldiers cannot attrlhute their wrongs to me. I stand here vindicating the Constitution as it was banded down to nic, and here, in the last hours of lile, I call upon you to clinsr. to the Constitution of the couatry as the mariner clings to his compass. Mr. Johnson spoke about two hours, and was heartily applauded. In conversation aiterwards, he spoke without reserve of President Graut, whom he characterized as a bundle of pre judices, and of his Gift-en'.erprlsc Cabinet, a he called it. MARINE TELEGRAPH.
