Oct. 87, 18G3 1TIB NK HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY Of the Jobn Street Methodist Episcopal Ciiurch wm celebrated on Sunday. llie occasion was interesting because the church is the flrst one established bj tho Methodlsta in this country, the building being dedicated October 30, 17G8, jiiBt 100 years nd called "Wctlpy Chapel." "Wesley's clock" is still in the lecture-room ot the present church, and is said to ke. p pood time. Sundty's serrices Commenced with a love-feast at 9 A. M., and the relation of religious experiences, ani Bishop Janes proaohed the centennial sermon from the 6th and 8'.h verges of the 20th IValiu. The book from which the Bishop read his text was printed la 1011. Everything was antique, solid, time beaten; and the principal speaker showed enough good MeihoJid breath to la it for a hun dred j oars more. AT GRACE CHURCH ft bishop whs consecrated, and the fash'onable congregation, whose memb?ri Mr. Beechar stigmatizes as sending their cards to one another through their footmen, was fuller than ever. The divine on whom the act of consecration Was performed is Kev. I'r. Charles Fran'tlin Robertson, 8. T. P., elected Bishop of tlie Diocese of Missouri last September. The ceremonies commenced at half-past ten, and were not over until nearly two; so thU ritualism had a fair shoiv. A PUBLIC POLITICAL DEBATE took place last night between Dr. Frederick Schatz and Mr. Oswald Ottcnderfcr, at Ttin. many Hall. Schatz, who is a candidate for elector on the Republican ticket, gave the challenge, and Ottendorfer, the Democratic candidate for the same office, accepted it. Each of them had three-quarters of an hour allowed him to open his argument in, and a half an hour to close it. Schatz' points, which he made good, were that th present Democracy is a spurious one; thtt its leaders are guilty of having instigated, aided, and abetted the Rebellion, and are responsible for the civil war; and that they have again made their party a tool of the Southern aristocracy. A kw occurred on Saturday evening at a FENIAN MEETING held in Military Hall, in the Bo very. The supporters of George Francis Train for member of Congress from the Fifth district were listeniLg to an adiress by a Fenian head-centre "Walsh by name. In the midst of an eloquent peroration the alarm was raised that two British spies were in the loom. Two luckless men, who happened to be pointed at as the spies in question, were seizcd and would probably have been beaten to death had they not managed to escape and taken refuge in a store, where they were rescued by the pcrtxe. It is rumored that we are soon to suffer from an invasion of ACTORS, AUTHORS, AND SCULPTORS, among whom are mentioned Charles ReaJe, Miss Braddon, Charlotte Cushman, Miss Emma Stebbins, Hans Christian ndersen, Anthony Trollope, MaxMuller, and Miss Hosrner. These four couple would pair nicely together, though whether they aie all coming in a bunch or not rumor doth not as yet commit herself by saying. Last week the IMPORTATIONS at this port amounted to one and a half millions of dollars. An Irishman named Eerrigaa bui been amueiDg himself with SETTING HIS WIFE ON FIRE, from the effects of which she died on Sunday a the New York Hospital. For a loug time they bad been leading a dls satisfactory and distempered life together, and so he finally determined to wind up the basines on Saturday night while he was drunk and she not much better. His business will probably be wound up a soon as he appears beore the Grand Jury. THK RECONSTRUCTED STEIN WAT BALL was formally opened on 8aturday night, Theo dore Thomas' graud orchestra performing, toge, ther with Madame La Grange. This lady Is beginning to be snubbed by thc critics here. She did very well last season because it w;8 her first appearance after the lapse of a baker's dozen of years, but now they discover thut sh' is all culture and no voice. A delightlul surprise during the eveuing was the Cist appearance of una. scott siddons, who had not been expected to debut until last night. It appears, however, that she had yielded to the solicitations of Mr. Steinway, and con sented to appear in the intervul between the two parts of the concert. She is a lovely, poetic- looking lady, with an abundance of dark hair f allies' heavily on slender shoulders, and a pleasing, gentle, intellectual face. ' Her voice is bell-clear and piano sweet. She is a gentle tragedienne rather than a "great'' one, for she. was too solt a Lady Macbeth (she read the sleep-walking scene), and she was pretty near perfection in Tennyson's "May Queen." She may become the fashion here, for last night the hall was well tilled, and her reception was very warm indeed. The religious sect of the ADYENTIST8 here, whoso headquarters are at the intersection of Grand and Allen streets, are exultant over the recent earth-rumblings of California. Tbey believe that the shaking epoch has arrived, and that the universal symptoms of it are only a question of time. In fact, nothing can "shake" them out of their bcllof. Some months ago I had occasion to describe the WINTER GARDEN PALACE, a sort of bazaar where xo sinnle article or set of articles is said lor more or lees than one dollar, and where a score or so of pretty girl are the saleswomen. According to gossip at police headquarters, a Mr. Harvev Beckwith has been paying marked attention to Miss Mrj Ann Kelley, one of the pretty gin' ,n question, and Induced her, in company with. ,lster aleswoman, Miss Nellie Stewart, to take a dri" wlta tlm Mary Ann's frighwnod mother tha proper cause of alarm not Vt1d8 transpired went thereupon to police headqv arter and had all the police stations in the city 'e'egraphed to besides taking the police reporters oi the mora' Ing papers into her confidence. On returning hone, however, sho found tko said Mary Ann safe and sound, and the resul' was a card in yesterday's newspapers wherelu she takes back everything she sa d against Beckwllb, and acquits Lim of any evil dcaigu towards her "own Mary Ann." naioa pouerot's new motnlng paper, tho Democra', is a fac timile of the Aim, so far as the type, tho arrange meat of the different departments, and the general appearance of the sheet are concerned It opened its eyoi upon this woful world last Saturday morning, and, like tho gunorality of healthy babVss, is doing as well as can bo ex pected. All the CONPIDENCH OPERATORS are not yet dead. To specimen, who nave Just boen earning a llvlig in that lino (or thc last thirty years, have just been up before Jus tice Mansfield. v Tbelr plan is to present certificates, purport ing to be signed by the moH wealthy and iuHii ential citizens, and announcing that the bearers having had a horse killed hy collision with one of the avenue cars, or a boat smashed by being run over in the Hound, are withiut their usual means of support, and doshe the assistance of the charitable. "1UB LANCASHIRE LABd" was produced in excellent style atWallack's lust night. It is a good, sterling domestic play, in which the interest Is that of hearts and homes. Mr. Fisher, Mr. J. W. Wallack, and Miss Kltynge have especially gool parts. The examination into the ROSENBERG NATURALIZATION FRAUDS is progressing. All the faots yet adduced are that thc market value of naturalization certifi cates is two dollars each for small lots, or fifteen hundred dollars per thousand. Ali Bada. CITY ITEMS.
