Lonis Napoleon resided here some time, and tbere were s.ili in the apaitments wLich be ociiwifed some memorials of him shown. The churches are noble old minsters in the mediivvnl style, but having been stripped In tne time of the Ueiornifition of ml their pictuves, and he walls whitewashed, they look bare; and, us places of Protestant wort-h;p, are about as uncouiloi table ns can well be imagined. Tbe Uotauic Garden and the Zoological Collection are in pood tate, oud as extensive and well arrantiP.1 anythinp; you see iii Europe, with the exception o; Ketieni's Park. Tne Zoological Gardens in London have no parallel in th woild, I suppose. We wandered through tho streets ot this strange city wiih peculiar feelings, rending the names on the sien-boavils, and won derine, as we saw those which were familiar to us, whether those who bore them retained any recollection ot those whi had wandered from thence into onr own distant land, and whether they would be willing to acknowledge kindred with tvso strangers who had come from that laud to look at tb.3 home of their ancestors. From Amsterdam we made an excursion one day to liroeck, cekbtated ui the cleauest and neatest place 1u tho world; and, in fact, it is so. It contuius about eight hundred inhabitants, mostly merchant', landed pi-oprietors, stock holders, aud otber persons ot fortune who have rented here to spend their leisure and enjoy lite. You leave your carriage at tho Inn by thr side of the village aud pioceed to inspect It on foot. There is not a 6'reet in it, or bridge, wide enough lo admit a cairiaic. A notice on a board warns strauee-s that they are not to smo'xe witbiu the precincts of the town without a stopper on their pipes. The narrow streets iDtersectiui it are puvoJ with bricks or 6ma)l pebbles 6et in patterns; the paths are Btrewed with clam shells; tbe leaves even from the trees are carefully Ewept up every morning. The houses are not large, standirg with their gables to the street, constructed t boards and scrupulously painted white or green, mauy of them in a Kind of florid, gvotisqnt; style, which is neUher Grecian, German, nor Chinese. One ha a pasteboard looking fiont intended to represent a temple; another 19 painted in all colors, as it were a theatre; another is as plain as can be; while still another seams to be the queerest, oddest thing you ever saw. something between a bird cage and a Chinese temple. The iront door is always closed, except on occasions of a funeral, u wedding, or a christening and, though tbe murblo steps are washed every day, no toot ever Bteps upon them except upon tnese extraordi nary occaons. Vve were admitted into one, where wa saw the china all arranged in rows lust as our graud niothera used to arrange it; the same little tiny cups and saucers which, we admired so much in our juveuility. Tho fireplace, whitewashed inside, nnd the chimney back covered with flowered paer, the trammels shining like silver, and the pots and kettles as brigbt as new coined dollars, tbe wood work scoured with soap and brush vntil it showed marks of giving out. Vou leave jour shoes at the door and put on slippers, and if you should bring in a particle of dust it is not improbable that you would give tbe good lady a til of hysterics. SVe went imo the school and saw the children, and they were as clean &i the test. We dined at the hotel, and the young landlady put on her best cap, her cleanest apron, and her gold ornaments to wait on us. Every thing but the plates and knives was silver; certainly it was tho cleanest dinuer table aud furniture we bad ever seen. Here the children came out of school to see us D'ltch Americans, and thbir teacher to as'i us questions, through our guide as interpreter. C UBIO US PHENOMENA . Observations ol tho J1oimutt SI. l'Inui inarloii. In a communication addressed (o the Paris Academy ot Sciences, II. Flammarlon gives an account of the phenomena he observed during a late scientific ascent in an ail balloon. As regards sound, be states that its intensity is propagated to a considerable height in tho atmospuere. Thus, he beard the whistle ot a steam engine at an altitude of 3t)0U metres; the noise of a railway train passing, at 2500 metres; the burking of dogs, at 18U0 metres; the report of a gun, the same; the tries ot a large crowd, tha crowing of cocks, and the noUe of bells, at 1GIIU metres; tbe sound of drum aud the music of an orchestra, at 1400 metres; the rum bling of carriages on a stoue pavement, at 1200 nietitB; the huroau voice at 10'JO metres (tive eighths ot a mile); the croaking of frogs at 9U0; and tbe chirping ot a cricket, at SOOrnet-es. It is not so in the ca-e ot a defending sound; 'or the voiceof the nTonaut, at an altitude of 100 metre, cannot make ltsi it heard distinctly. The cloud olitr no unpeuinient to an ascending sound. The average velocity per second in the la'.ter case is about 340 metres. The quiet wa'.crs of a lake echo the sound best upward. While the balloon moves in obedience to the current, its shadow sweeps either the earth or the clouds. It is generally hlack, but it sometimes happens that, falliug on a darker tpot than itself, it assumes ra'.her a luminous appearance. In this case, examined through a telescope, it is found to consist of a dark central nucleus surrounded by lumii ous penumbra. On the green trees of a forest it Bppeais yellow. On the clouds, when they are white, aud at tbe moment ol issuing aain into the pure tky with tho sun shining, the air bal loon is minutely depicted with ail its details, and of a greyich hue. When it his reached an altitude of three thousand metres, the sky ap pears dark and impenetrable, in proportion as there is a diminution of moisture. Tne light of the rising sun apppars to penetra'.o through CM-ry terrestrial object, while that ot the mo in, which is alwuis red, seeuih only to glide over them. It Is an instance of a stream near its source dividing into two courses at a main water shed, aud thence taking opposite fi les of this water shed, discharging by the double outlet into two distiuct systems of drainage. The feature occtus a few miles lroin Couirie, in Perthshire, at the mnu oi uieu ienuocK, a tributary ot the river Earn. In the absence ot diasrams, which always illustrate these matters best. I must trust thnf the following descriotion will he intpll "A email rivulet rises under a craggy bill, one of the 'Meal Butane iat.ge, which separates the drainage of tbe Tuy aud Earn. "Tbe stream for a short dUlanoo takes the course of a well defined pullv, till it opens out Into a small and comparatively flat area So ir its direutfon has been with the main water-shed ridge. Aaiived at the Hat ground, which is bogey aud broken up into what are termed in Scotland 'peat hngs.'it hns reached tho point where its waters split off into two branches, one making lor Loch Tav and becomim? tha 'Kinplon Hum,' the other descending by way of Glen Ledt ock, iuto the valley of the Earn. This divergence is caused by a very slight but imme diate rise on thelowcrtideof the iork, gradually swelling iuto a thouhler, or hump, which be comes a continuation of the sheading ridge. When I visited the spot last November there was a good, decided run of water both above and below the divergence. "The effect of this curious configuration of ilie ground is to insulate a large district of Perthshire, roughly speaking, about a fifth of the county. "Possibly nature mav, after some time, In cline to one or other of the channels a very slight deepening of either at the fork would turn the balance but at present (of course I speak of the time of my visit) there is no doubt Hint tbe head streamlet has naturally selected BLd is using them both." Bowiloin College. A Maine paper says: "Dr. Leonard Woods, ex-President of Uowdoin College, arrived home on Saturday, after a sojoura in Europe of fifteen months, which he has devoted to researohes re lating to American history. The Doctor went abroad, intending to examine the questions iu which the Maine Historical Soeitty have a spe cial interest ibe facts relating to the Popnem Colony, the Gorges aud Mason settlements and he had an arraunemeut to that effect with the executive committee of tho society. He soon, however, found himself irawa into a larger and le.s explored field, that of the early disco veries on the northern coast irota the time of tho Northmen. In (bis he received espsciul assistance from J. G. Kohl, libra rian of the city of Berlin, wto is the most skilled person known in early American cartography. Mr. Kohl was once employed by our Government in ibis special wovk, but from want of an appropriation by Congress, his labors have not breu made available. Tho executive committee of the Maine Historical Society, learning the views of Dr. Woods, aud having in their control an anuual appropriation from the State, authorized him to employ Mr. Lohl to prepare reduced copies of twenty-five of the more important of thes-e early maps, with pro per explications, for the first volume of the new documentary collections of tho society. Mr. Kohl ente ed upon the work with zeal, and beioro Dr. Woods left Germany had nearly completed it. Dr. Woods has also found many valuable documents, hitherto unknown, re lating to the early period ot discovery, ot which ha has obtained copies. Among others, the lor?-le.st paper drawn uo by Hackluyt from mateiial furnished by Sir Walter Raleigh." An Insurance Anecdote.
