THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA?. THURSDAY, AUGUST., 27. 18G3. AMONG THE MOUNTAINS. From our own Corretpondtnt. Fo&t 8adkh. Wyomihk Triitot, , v Union T0 F1C KR , Aug, 18, l-M J It is not ofteD your corrcepoodent has the pri vilege of writing you from a point nearly 2000 miles we6t of rhllndelphm. But hero wo are more than 1000 miles beyond the Mississippi river, end 5,2 out on tie great Union Paciflc Kailioad, the wonder of the age. Upon the adjournment of the "American As sociation for the Advancement of Science,' which has just held its seventeenth annual meeting at Chicsgo, we determined to see some thing more of this great West; and a few of us, members of tho Association, started on August 12th, by the Northwestern Koad for Omaha, on the Mibdlssipp". liver, and former capital of Ne braska. Rcroa'nlDR here twenty-four hours, wo entered the cars of tr-e Union raclflc for the end of the road, wherever we might find that to be. At Omaha our party was vastly enlarged by a company of excursionist, soje dozen members of scientific asoclr.t'.ons, with their wlve3, under the Epecial charge of Capta'u Iurnerof Chicago, Cue of the active Director of the Chicago and Northwestern Railror.d, and W. B. Ogden, Eq. the far-famed ruiho ul projector and capitalist of Ciiic: ro. Among the company were representatives from Harvard, soch as Dr. Coald, Genera Eiit-ticj from We, Pto'cssor Bi'Viman, Professors Whitney and HaiKh; Prof sior llungcrford, fro:n Burlinatou University; Mr. Hi'l, of Allnuy New York Slate Geologist, and others not un lnown to t'..'e scieDtiQc world. De'ightfully luxurious cars were especially provided for tie parly, and every facility afforded by the olllcers of the road for a thor Ovgii Inspection of the road and the magnificent scenery which. It has revea'cd to the world. Journeying st?ad'ly wc?twrd at the rate of twenty miles an hour, stopping lWc and there at points of ppeclal scenic, historic, or geologl. Ctil interest, we reached In tweaty-loar hours the notoiious city of Cheyenne, at the foot of the Rocky Mountains (Black Hills), and 61G miles from' Omaha Cheyenne was for a long time practically the terminus ot the road, and acquired a reputation such as Julesburg, Lara mie, aud now iienton .each iu succession has attained. Theso towns have n very br'.cf but interne life, and then lapjo Into ordinary dull western villages. So lor g os each is the point of depart ure lor stage line?, cmiginnt trains, express routes, miners' outfitting, etc. etc., they are full of stores, saloons, gambiirg hells, and the most abandoned character, male and female, which the whole land can fumii-h. No one can readily exaggerate the wickedness of these moving towns, or be duly grateful that the completion of the road will abolish them. From the Cheyenne we climbed at the grade of 90 degrees to tbt mile, up the mountains to Sherman, thirty-two miles further west, and famous as beiug the highest point on the route from the Mississippi to tho Pacific Ocean 8202 feet above the sea. From Sherman it Is bat twenty-three miles to Fort Saunders, a Gov ernment post, with BOO men, where we were very cordially and gallantly received. by Ganeraj Gibbous, commanding Rocky Mountain District( and General Potter, Com man Junt of the pout, lit re the party dined with General Frank Blair, And the other Government Commissioners ot the road who here have their headquarters. Arriviug, at last, after less than forty hours actual travel, the present terminus of regular railroad trains at Benton we were attached to a (raiu of railroad iron, and hastened on to see the eighth wonder of the world the aking of th road. We shall not attempt a minute description of it (It is of itself enough for a letttT). 1 can give you an outline. Imagine 20,000 eu the actual working force -scattered over the plaias for 1G0 miles surveying, grading, etc. etc. Ibcn a force ot 500 men laying the ties aud putting down the rails at the rate of four and five miles a day, and you can faintly conceive tho buildini the great raelflc Railroad. The ties (brought up by cars) are distributed along by mule trains; the rails are hurried forward in hand cars, drawn by horses, much as canal boats ara propelled, and empty cars returning as fast as fleet horses can run, to he refilled. To keep up to the workmen Is actually weerylng to persons unaccustomed to walking. The workmen Bleep iu cars, and nightly pitched tents, and cat in an immense moving restaurant. Having all assisted iu laying rails and driving 6pikes, and thus added our mite to the achieve ment of the century, we reluctantly turned our faces toward the rising sun, and recrossing "lhe Divide," which separates the waters of the Pacific from the waters of the Missisaippi, alter a long sleep in Pullman's palace cars, we reached to-day this delightful Railroad Hotel. Time forbids that I should attempt to speak of the scenery, the soil, the difficulties of construe. tion, the wild animals 6ten, aud the thousand varied experiences or the journey, among which interviews with the Mormons and buffalo banting have no unimportant place. I . E. K TERRIBLE SUFFERING. . TWO Me, Blinded bjr am Kxploslom, Aro Nine Uaym Wlibont rooa. We take the following from the Wabasha fMinn.1 Herald of Anrr. '20: By a letter from Mr. Harris, formerly of this place, we learn the particulars of a remarkable cafe ot Butlerine at Vermillion. Two men. Norman and Peterson, were em- I loved by tho Wabasha U ld aud Silver Mining Cimn?w. in drive a drift on Pine Island, where this company has a very rich, vein. They worked on the island alone, the principal ope rations of the miners beinir on the main lanJ. fine dav Ihev fired the fuse to a bin blast, aud. after waiting a long time, found that the lighted luse had become extinguished and at once set themselves to work to drill out the blast, using water freely. Mr. Norman was an old and experienced miner, end feared no niis bapp, taking, as ho t'lounht, sufficient pains to nreveut an explosion; but by some mean?, in some strange manner, the blast was ignited while they were at work. Two fingers were torn from one of Norman's bands, and the drill drove through the wrist of the other arm, and both men were blinded by the explosion. Kino dnva after this a Dartv went over to the Island from the main land, and, finding blood rniinl the. stint where thj lll-lated men ha I been at work, they became alarmed, aud tounlipil viforouslv. and finally fouud them. They had been without food siuce the accident; wrist and hund were alive with vprmiiL n,l in the eves of both of these terribly smitten men. these loathsome crawling thintrs were so embedded that they had to be putiea out with nineerp. The utmost kindness and care In the power tt 1be minors was bestowed on the wounded men, and Norman wa sent down to Superior for treatment, while Peterson remained in camn. 1a ss of blood saved the men from tho cravings of a terrible appetite, while both must have been possessed of iron constitutions to have enabled them to survive those terrible nine dsjf.
