De Haas writes to the St. Louis Demo- rrnf: The mounds on the American Bottom, In Illi nois, are comprised in two separate groups, con stituting one grand ana luiposiug system, xuey Tuimhpr nearlv two hundred, including those on the adiaceut bluff. Ttiey are of various sixes aud shapes, rising from the scarcely diutingutsh- able elevation to the Imposing structure of over ninety feet. They are conical, ellipsoidal, trun cated, square, and tetragonal. They are en tire I v oi earth, and raised with as much regu larity and symmetry as a potter would mould a model in clay. Tney have all been formed from material taken ironi the adjacent plain or bluif vegetable mold, clay, and soil and pre sent a marxed mottled appearance, identical with, the mounds iu the Ohio valley. Every mound has been elevated by human labor, und be who denies this sell-evident tact simply ac knowledges himself ignorant on the subiect. Tin evidence, externally and internally, posi tion, structure, character, and conti-uts, clearly, positively, ana nnmisiasaoiy prove iuib. "The tumuli uuder comidwratiou were proba bly all erected by the same people. We cannot here, as iu the case ot the ancient Britons, de termine Irom the character ot the inoimus the trne of raee thev cjver. There, the long, ellip tical barrow coutaius the long or duichovcpUatte head: aud ver contra, the round or conical bar row contains the ro jnd or brachuceuiiaHo heaJ. Here, we have the long ami round mounds, but not human cram a ol corresponding tvpti con fined to those lorms. We have here the eemi- nroiinatlious and pyramidal heal, but not confined to any particular loriu of mounds. "The hctilia irom tue western mounds con sists of distinct qualities. One is Que, compact, close-grained, klia-onruea, painiea, aua iastn. fully ornamented, moulded lor a Dreocia com poed of clay, aud proved much skill. The other is coarse, rude, of irregular thickness, mn.ririfld. oi jameutalive without taste, and composed of cliy and small rhomboidal fri; incuts of white epathic carbonate ot lime, aud some of simple clay. Somo of the liner qutlity occasionally shows a Tio'i'biug or glazing, lpnuiiiT minute sfiiu. a if d no with a tult ot fjrruu .liniipd into a burbolte. 'In making some excavations on the plain, a short distance wx-bt ot the large mound, I dis covered lame quantities of pottery in eouuectioa with human temaln. Borne of the specimens of the finer quality are of exquisite skill and workman ship. They are of porphyry, horneblende, granite, serpentine, nephrite, and the hardest varieties of amphabolie rock. "One of the most interesting clauses Is agri cultural. They are unlike any Implements or utensils in store, found in the Ohio valley, or any other part of the country. They were un doubtedly used in tilling the soil. One repre sents the modern hoe, and oar domestic imple ment is but little improvement on that of the mound builders. A specimen before me is of limpir quartz, of faultless workmanship. Their smaller quartz weapons are very fine, ranging from the common horn stone up through all the varieties to the present chalcedony. The celts or axes represent an extensive cla?s, and are of almost every style and finish. Some are very large, weighing over ten pounds. A granitic implement far surra'sea these in pize. some weighing over twenty-flve pounds. The use of this was probably to dress hides or crnsh corn. Their mortars and pestles have been recovered, their plpes.dit-cs and porpbyrytic rings tor games. "The household gods lares and penateg of o people forever lost are anong the contents of mounds added to the fine collection ot curly art which I have made in this interesting reeion. "The ornaments wllh which t bey decorated their persons, the weapons with which they loufcht, the implements with which they slow their game, and the vessels with which their domestic board was scived with viands, have all been rccovrred, with a luree uumber ot miscel laneous articles ra stone, which constitute, with those irom otner antiquarian localities, one of the most exteusive and valuable collec tions of early American art vet made. "One object soueht in these researches is to make a tuH collection of ancient art. represent ing the archaeology of the northern division of the western continent." The Kingdom of Slam. M. A. Grchan, Consul or the "Supreme King" ol Siam, has just published, in Parts, a history ol this singular country, from which the follow ing new and comparatively unknown particu lars are gathered. Siam is a kingdom of monopolies. The reve nues of the royal treasury are derived from im posts laid upon agriculture, commerce, aud trade. There arc tixed taxes upon the cultiva tion of the belds, customs duties, the sale ol all kinds of merchandise, ant upon all vessels entering or leaving ports in the realm. Arrack, tobacco, oil, palm leaves, charcoal, wood, fish, ores, are alt monopolies, the Government grant iug the right to deal in these to individuals or companies at certain rates. The entire revenue from all these sources amounts to about twenty minions or aonara. The mode of collecting these Imposts is simple, The King chooses certain mandarins In each district, whose duty it is to make the collection and deliver the money to the Chief of the Pages. This lunctiouarv keeps a book wherein the various suuis paid and by whom paid into his hands, are recorded. He shows this at suited periods to the King, who verifies the amounts, and the whole is then deposited in the Royal Treasury. The Kiug is, therefore, the sole administrator of the public lunds. The King has twenty-nine sons and thirty three daughters, children of thirty wives. Polygamy is the established rule of the king dom, but although a rich Siamese may have thirty w.ves, only one ot these is legally his wite, cau iniierit his property or command nta House hold. The others are merely his slaves. The maimers of the Siamese are simple, their tiabitsfrugal, and they are an extremely clean people. They eat little meat, and drink nothlug but tea and water. The value of the exports of Siam in 18G4 was as follows: To Utilna about 85.0O0.0OO To India do 325,000 To North America, do 820,000 To Java do 800 000 To England do 60 000 To South America, do. .. 45,000 The chief article of export is rice. The other most important products exported are sugar, salt, fish, teak wood, cotton, and buffalo horn. me Kingdom is ncn in minerals, uoia, iron, copper, lead, antimony, and tin are louna in greater or less quantities, itubies, sapphires, amethysts, opals, agates, garnets, and cornelian also abound. The palace and temples ot the king contain immense treasures of cold and jewels.. Conoer is the metal in most common use. All household utensils, both among the rich and the poor, are made ot this metal, tue only oinerence beiDg in the style ot manufacture ana orna mentation. The Siamese artisans excel in the making of cold and silver enamelled work. S'x hundred such artisans are employed at once, occasionally in the King's palace. They also manufacture sun scans ana sasnes, broidered with cold, of remarkable beauty. Some of these sell for a hundred dollars a piece. The national language is chieuy monosylla bic, and is called the Thai language. Its singularity consists in the fact that its alphabet constitutes almost its entire vocabulary. When that is once learned the whole language is understood. The relition is cure Buddhism, but the pre sent King Is exceedingly liberal and tolerant of all creeds in nis dominions. MARINE TELEGRAPH.
