Original literary monu ments written in the old lauguago called Pall, used by the Buddhists in their sacred books, are exceedingly rare in Europe. . The Imperial Library here and the Royal one at Copen hagen are the only establishments possessing a series of MSS. in that tongue. This extreme Scarcity is owing to the great relaotauoe the Buddhift priests evince to intrast their reli gious writings to Europeans, or to allow them to copy them. Two years ago the Imperial Library succeeded in purchasing a series of MSS. of this kind, and valuable on aooount sot only of the number of volumes, but also of the contents, which are extremely curious. Nevertheless, the great Buddhist collection ealled Trinliaka (the Triple Bket) was only represented by a few fragments la this first acquisition. This chasm has now happily been filled np by Mgr. Bigandet, Bishop of Rangoon, who, aware of the value these works must have for Orientalists, has succeeded in obtaining from the Biruaau mouaroh, as a pre sent to the Emperor of the Frenoh, a complete copy or the whole collection, consisting of twenty-eight volumes. The text is written with a sharp point on palm leaves, in Birman characters; ana tne binding is not less ouri- ous, tne siaes ueing oi wooa painted and cilt une oi iud wuni is me - ivsiuavacoa, written in old Tali characters: here each of the leavuu is bordered with figures and ornaments in red on a gold ground. The Washington correspondent of the Cin cinnati Times says: Another widow lady has been pressing her claims before Congress, and has also becu suc cessful. Her name 1 Martha M. Jone. and she is the administratrix of Samuel J. Jones, her husband, who obtained a patent some years ago for an Improvement in tine paint, which patent bis widow desires to have extended. Bee Is possessed of indomitable perseverance, 1 good looking, intelligent, and highly educated. She stated her own rase to the House Committee on Patents, and the bill she was inte rested in parsed the House and went to the S"n nti. She knew if it was not atteaded to quickly it would go over to the next session, aud per haps might not be acted npea for a ytar or two. Const quetly,oB Wednesday afternoon, she took a position In the marble room, and seeding her cardf to ivarloBi Senators, sacceeded iu gaining bb interview with each ens, for as one would come out to converse with her she woald re quest hlBi to send out another, and In this way she stated her case to all personally. She was a lady of winning ways, and worked upon the susceptibilities of the grave and dignified Seeators till she succeeded in gain ing all In lisr favor except Senator Willey ot West Virginia, who stoutly opposed the bin. (le was alone in his glory, however, for when tie voie came to be taken he was the only one oppoed, while all the rest were in lavor of the bill, which of course passed, and the lady went on her way rejoicing. In the course of the debate Senator Willey "twitted" his ftllow Senators for being captivated with the Intelligence and vivacity oi lh lady who bad o eloijmntly pleaded her own cae, which little piece of sarcasm caused q .its a lau?ti among "the grave und dignified" legislators, all f whom "acknowledged the corn," and Kever dy Johaton iraukly admitted that he felt a gieat admiration for the lady. The most amusing part ot the debate was Senator Willey's effort to prove inconsistency upon the lady in her statements beiore the Patent Committee, of which Willey Is a member. In her written statement she tet forth that her beloved husband. Samuel Jones, was deesly tfietretsed in mind one n:gbt, and could not sleep. About midnicht hejunipee up, exclaiming, ' I have itl I've got it I" meaning he had solved the problem of his invention, btie begted him to come to bed, but Le walked the floor all night, and in the morn ing made a practical test ot his inveution, which succeeded even beyond his expectations. This was all very pretty, but Senator Willey lLsinea upon it there waa a material discrep ancy in the statement, inasmuch as the Sumuel Jones aforesaid bad applied for and obtained a patent ia England for the sane invention two years before this affecting incident occurred. It was no use talking, however, Hgainst the appeals of a gond-looklug and interesting widow; so the worthy Senator had all the oppo sition to himself, and came olf "second best." Wash. Vor. Cm. 2 lines. Horses. Dr. Holland writes from London to the Spritefield Htpub tcan about horses. He says: jl cordon mere are turce general classes ot bcrtes to be seen in the streets. The omnibus and cab hoiscs average, in weight, from teu hundred and fifty to eleven hundred pounds. The dralt horses are immense creataies some of them elephantine in proportions. Tbey were originally of Flemish blood, and were so large ts to render it nece-sar.v to cross the breed with the Euallsh horses. The result is a somewhat smaller, bat every way a brighter and better horse. What the original blemish horee could have been, I am at a lavs to conjecture. for rituly, some ot the London noises would quite place the Herring tato mau's ponies iu the shade. The third class is made up of a breed of pomes, or small horses, we'ghiug not more then five hundred to live hundred and titty pounds. 1 have baa no opportunity to learn what breed oi horses tbey belong to, bat they are too numerous, and too muca alike, not to be of distinct blood. They have none of what is knows in America as the "pony build," but are fcimply small borsei, neatly made and as nimble foxes. Now, with all these horses the rule tollows that every pound of muscle doe just as much work on the road as two pounds do in America. The cab and omuibus horse does twice as much as the same horse does in Atne- ilea. The draft horse does as much at the dray as two oidinary oray horses in America, and the little horses, which are driven mainly In butchers' carts and grocers' cirt', will tire a cab horse to follow them with no load at all. In connection with these statements it should be recorded that the speed of all vehicles in the streets of London, whether the localities be crowded or not, is at least a third faster than it is In corresponding streets in American cities. The ordinary speed of vehicles in London, in which passengers or light loads are transported, is one which is considered not entirely safe in Main street, Springfield. Mass., and one which, in some streets of Boston or New York, would be at once checked by the ponce. A man who sits in a "Hansom" finds himself driven at an unprecedented pace through crowded thorough- lares, and, Yankee though he may be, he will otien wonder whether he is going to bring up at last without a broken neck. I mention this matter of speed, particularly, because it shows that even more work is done by one horse in London than by two in New York. He not only draws as large a load, bnt he travels with erea'er iapidity. ltie streets of London present such a spectacle of headlong activity as no American city can show, in con sequence of the ntd passage of all sorts of ve hicles through tne streets, i might add t this statement, touching the supeiior speed of the London horses, a word aoout the gi eater weight of the carriages which they are obliged to draw behind them. All carnaecs are built more heavily in Great Brl ain than In America. They are built to lan, and many oi , them seem to me to be superfluously heavy. The point which 1 wish to lmprs-s upon my American reader is simply this: that the Eng lish here, employed in the streets of a city, or on the roads of the couRtrv. doe twice as much wcik as the American hotse similarly employed in America. This 1s the patent, undername tact. No man t an fail to see It wb" has his eves about blm. How does bo do it Whv does ho do it? These are most irunortant Questions to au Anierl can. 1 the tnglUh horse better than tue American? Not at all. Is he overworked? have sen no evidence that be is. 1 have seen but one lame horse in I ondon. The simple ex plenatinn Is that the Knglishmau ba invested iu nertect and permanent roads what the American expends in perisbabte horei that lequire to be fed. We are using to-uav, in the utile town ot Snrinctield. lust twice as manv horses as would be i ece HEBry to do its business it the roads all over the lowu were as good as Main street is from Ferry to Central. We are sanporting hun dreds of hon-es to drag 'uads throueh holes that on phi to be filled, over sand that should be bariteni d. tnrougu mun tnat ougnt not to oe permittee! to exist. We have the misery of bad ro'.tds. and are actually or practically called upon to pav a premium for them. It would be demons rably cheaprr te have good roads than poor ores, ft is so here. A road well built is easily kept in repu'r. A mile ot good macadam is n ore eaiily supported than a poor horse. Villemessant is a great advocate of the premium systrm in foruinp newspaper circu lation, lie once secured 5000 new subscribers to tbe Figaro in a week by offering a dozea oranges to each in a season of great scarcity of that fruit.
